SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Starting Wednesday, cruise ships will return to the San Diego Embarcadero — but they will not be picking up any customers for months to come. Experts say the longer the vessels stay, the harder it is for the cruise industry to bounce back.The Holland America Koningsdam returned to the Port of San Diego Wednesday morning. It is one of five cruise ships scheduled to dock at the Embarcadero for fuel and supplies. Unlike airlines and restaurants, which are two other industries hard hit by the pandemic, Brewster says cruises have no Plan B."Their revenues literally went to zero," Brewster said. "I mean, the others were really bad too, but you can't do a cruise ship on a takeout or drive-through."The Port says each cruise line must follow the CDC's "Framework for Conditional Sailing Order" before they can set sail. The first phase is to test and safeguard the crew. The second is a simulated voyage where the ships must prove their ability to mitigate COVID-19 risk. After that, they can slowly reintroduce passengers on their voyages.In the meantime, the ships and crews will stay put. But will the companies be able to stay afloat?"Even if the CDC and other organizations say, 'January one, you can resume your operations,' how many people would get on today?" Brewster asked.The hope is that travel will be on everyone's radar once it shifts away from the coronavirus."I think all of us have spent enough time at home the last nine months to last the next nine years," Brewster said. "So that's a good thing for the industry. There is going to be quite a bit of pent-up demand."According to the Port of San Diego, Holland America has some cruises scheduled to depart in April and May. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several students fighting over a BB gun at a Logan Heights middle school accidentally shot a fellow classmate Tuesday. The incident began when a boy told a fellow student he brought a BB gun to Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes. The two boys began fighting when the student told his classmate he didn't want to show him the BB gun. During the fight, police say the BB gun went off, shooting a 12-year-old girl in the temple. The student was treated at the school but didn't need to be taken to the hospital. The girl reportedly had a large welt on her head from the incident. At this time, the school hasn't said whether or not they'll be taking disciplinary action against the students.  759

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man found shot behind a Midway District strip mall was the victim of an armed robbery.Police received a call on Wednesday just after 6 p.m. over shots fired and a vehicle collision in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. Officers arrived to find a grey Acura had crashed into a retaining wall behind several businesses. Inside, the driver had been shot at least once.The man, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Salguero of San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Investigators say they've learned that Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat. When he arrived to meet the sellers, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.Multiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle, police said. The two suspects then fled on foot. Police only described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students at the Art Institute of California in San Diego say they feel betrayed by the institution after learning it's likely shutting down. They were notified Wednesday that if the school isn't squired by a buyer it will shut down on Friday, March 8.“We could see the cracks in the walls when a lot of the department heads were let go and they had one person running all the programs," said Tom Aleo, who studies game art and design. Aleo had just one quarter left before graduation. He says despite problems in the last year they were hoping for the best. "The emotions here are all over the place; shocked, confused, depressed," said Aleo. In July the Art Institute in Mission Valley stopped enrolling new students. And this week court documents revealed the company which operates the school, Argosy University, is accused of misusing millions of federal dollars.Students are frustrated they only got two days of warning that the school was closing, and are now scrambling to figure out their options. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego will continue using part of the second floor of Golden Hall as a temporary bridge shelter, and add a fourth location on the other side of downtown.The City Council voted Tuesday to fund its three current shelters for the next year, and seek an operator for a new one at 17th and Imperial. A recent point in time count found more than 5,000 homeless people in the city - about half of whom are unsheltered. The temporary bridge shelters in total have about 665 beds. The shelters provide services to help residents find work and ultimately transition to permanent housing. The San Diego Housing Commission reports that since the shelters opened around December 2017, about 540 previously homeless people - or 39 percent - have transitioned to permanent or other long-term housing after a month-long stay. That shows improvement from a March 2018 update, when that number was about 14 percent. "We're making headway big time," said Bob McElroy, who heads Alpha Project - which operates a downtown shelter. "Some of our folks have been out here 20-plus years, and you're not going to get your proverbial you-know-what together in three months."McElroy said longer-term financial commitments have helped attract more qualified staffing, and noted that Alpha Project recently opened a 52-unit complex that brought more housing opportunities.
