LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- 5G technology is the latest and greatest in wireless communication, but just how safe is it? A new cell phone tower near Lakeview Elementary School has parents concerned. “This just showed up overnight, There had been no explanation about it at all,” said Maria Tomasello. She and other parents say a county ordinance states the tower should be at least 300 feet from the school, but they were told this particular site was approved before the new rule.Parents are worried about the safety of the technology. “People might say that it hasn’t been studied enough and it’s safe, but why would we want to take that chance and expose our children and our staff.” RELATED: Protesters rally against 5G in San DiegoThe group says they’ve reached out to lawmakers and AT&T, but haven’t received the answers they want. 10News reached out to AT&T. The company said the tower in question is actually using 4G technology and there are no current plans for 5G at the site. Still, parents and many other concerned citizens have raised the question about the safety of 5G. Although parents are concerned, experts in the field say there’s nothing to worry about. “Let’s look at scientific studies done and not rely on anything people are putting out there about 5G,” said UCSD professor Sujit Dey. Dey is the director of the Center for Wireless Communications. He cautions people to be careful about where they get their information. RELATED: 5G speeds: National City seeks public input for Small Cells InstallationProfessor Dey says the main difference between 5G and 4G is the size and frequency of the electromagnetic wavelength. 5G uses a high frequency millimeter wave which is faster but doesn’t travel as far and can be blocked by things like buildings. That means 5G requires a greater number of smaller towers every few blocks. Dey says the bottom line is there is still more to learn, but he believes the technology is safe and may prove even safer that what we’ve been using. “Much safer actually than these big towers would have been,” Dey added. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- La Mesa, El Cajon, Poway, Santee and other local cities are among San Diego County cities to enforce a curfew Sunday night. A curfew will begin at 7 p.m. on May 31 and end at 7 a.m. on June 1 for the City of La Mesa. During that time, the city encouraged residents and visitors to shelter in place. The order was issued following a city council meeting at 9 a.m. Sunday. La Mesa's curfew will also be in effect from Monda at 7 p.m. to Tuesday at 5:30 a.m.National City has also imposed a curfew saying: "This curfew will be in effect starting today, May 31 from 8pm until tomorrow, June 1 at 5:30am. LAKE CHARLES, La. – They say, "not all heroes wear capes," and a group of hospital workers in Louisiana proved that.Despite raging winds, rain leaking through windows, no running water and no air conditioning, nurses and other staff at a Lake Charles hospital kept their most critical baby patients safe and sound during Hurricane Laura last week.The team of 20 stayed behind at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital while the Category 4 storm tore through the city. They cared for 19 babies in their NICU.Some of the babies were on respirators and ventilators, and others had been born extremely premature.Many of the infants had been at the community’s smaller women's hospital. They had to be transported through rough conditions to the larger facility where they rode out the storm.The babies have since been transferred to other hospitals across the state because the hospital was still without water as of Thursday night. 928

Larry Nassar has been moved from a federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. after his lawyer claims Nassar was assaulted in prison.The disgraced former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor was moved to a Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It's a place where inmates stay while waiting to be transferred to another prison.Nassar pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault in November 2017 after being charged with molesting seven girls, all but one of whom were gymnasts. Those sexual assaults happened at Michigan State University.In a filing by his attorneys, Nassar claims that he was abused in prison and also mentions the time when he was charged at by one of the victims' father in court."Dr. Nassar reports, that in late May he was physically attacked in federal prison within a few hours of being placed in general population," the court filing reads.  953
