Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was known to have a vigorous workout routine that kept her physically fit while sitting on the highest court in the country.Friday morning, following a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, her trainer of more than 20 years, Bryant Johnson, paid his respects by doing push-ups by Ginsburg’s casket.Journalists over the years have written about her strength-training and workouts with Johnson. Ginsburg began working out with Johnson after her first battle with cancer, in 1999.In 2017 he wrote a book about her exercise routine, "The RBG Workout: How She Stays Strong...And You Can Too!" When not lifting weights or coaching a client, he works as a clerk in the District courthouse in D.C.Their workouts took a brief hiatus from 2004-2007, when Johnson was deployed to Kuwait, according to USA Today. Johnson is an Army Reservist.Over the years, Johnson also started training with other justices, including Elena Kagan, Ginsburg’s Supreme Court colleague. 983

KGTV - The President is moving forward in sending National Guard troops to the border. The move comes after President Trump spent the last few days harping on border security The memorandum gives military leaders a 30-day deadline to get a plan together but calls for the immediate mobilization of National Guard personnel to the southern border of the United States. The two-page document does not include specific deployment size, location, duration or cost as those details are still being worked out by the Federal government.“We do hope the employment begins immediately,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, “we’ve been very specific state by state, locale by locale of what CBP believes they need and we’ll work with the governors to see what they need.“California Governor Jerry Brown is the only governor to not lend support to the measure yet. President Bush deployed more than 6,000 troops to assist border agents in Operation Phalanx in 2006 and President Obama sent 1,200 troops to the border in a similar operation in 2010. 1068

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A researcher at UC San Diego just got a million grant to further his work into nanosponge therapy.Liangfang Zhang, a professor of nanoengineering and bioengineering, has been working on creating macrophage cellular nanosponges, tiny particles covered in white blood cell membranes, to treat sepsis and other diseases."They can be used to bind to the virus and neutralize the virus," Zhang says. "So now the virus would lose the ability to infect the host cells."The nanosponges act as decoys, tricking a disease or virus into binding with them instead of with human cells. While the initial aim is to treat sepsis, Zhang says it has applications to other deadly diseases, including COVID-19."The formulation that we're developing for treatment of Sepsis is the same formulation that you will use with COVID-19," he says. The grant comes from CARB-X, a Boston-based medical philanthropy that specializes in funding research into antibacterial treatments. Zhang says the money will be used for his company, Cellics Therapeutics, to further advance the research into clinical trials, FDA approval, and production of the nanosponge therapy.Steve Chen, president and chief medical officer of Cellics Therapeutics, says he's hopeful they can advance the nanosponges into human trials within two years."We're essentially looking at how this platform can treat not just infectious disease or future pandemics, but you could actually have a lot of applications in any type of autoimmune diseases or any type of inflammatory diseases," says Chen.In an early study published this year, Zhang's research showed the nanosponges were around 90% effective at blocking infections from taking hold.RELATED: UC San Diego researchers testing nanosponges to fight COVID-19Chen says the research and trial period may take too long for the nanosponges to be used during the current coronavirus pandemic. But he's hopeful it will help make the next outbreak less severe."My sincere desire is that we are not going to need this for COVID-19. But I think this does position us very well for any potential future kind of viral outbreak," says Chen.Cellics is also working on a Red Blood Cell version of their nanosponges, which may be ready for human trials within a year. 2283

Jason Seaman didn't give much thought to the most dangerous decision of his life. When an armed student entered his Indiana classroom and started firing, the teacher lunged at the shooter and stopped the gunfire."My actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could have done," said Seaman, a 7th-grade science teacher at Noblesville West Middle School."I deeply care for my students and their well-being. So that is why I did what I did."Seaman, 29, spoke publicly for the first time Monday since?he was shot three times. The football coach and former college defensive lineman used his athletic skills to take down the assailant. 662

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Has anyone seen Engine 57? That's the question the San Diego County Fire Department is asking after the official legal takeover of the formerly volunteer-run Julian-Cuyamaca Fire District. The county and the small town department are stuck in a legal battle since the volunteer department's dissolution in April 2019. Previously, members of LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission), a group that overseas special county districts, voted to dissolve the volunteer-run fire department. In March 2019, citizens voted the fire agency in charge should be San Diego County Fire Department. In April 2019, the official handover was supposed to happen. RELATED: Julian volunteer firefighters to ask to block dissolution of fire district"It's been very clear to us that the people in the community want the county [Fire Department] to be their service provider," San Diego County Fire Chief Tony Mecham said. Not everybody agrees, as some residents said the change in hands was decided in a secret meeting -- an illegal move according to the Brown Act. "These are people they trust. People that are their neighbors, their friends," Julian resident Vicki Newman said. Newman said she has been an advocate for the small town department since volunteers saved her brother-in-law's life. She said she does not understand why both departments can't coexist."We need all the boots on the ground. We don't need just Cal Fire. It's not just J.C or Julian against Cal Fire," Newman said. RELATED: New lawsuit filed over Julian fire department, attorney alleges "secret meetings"Volunteers cannot respond to calls anymore because legally, the station is now owned by the county. In April, a judge allowed county crews to begin daily equipment inspections. But for the last two months, they say the department's 0,000 Engine 57 has been missing. "Ultimately, about a week ago, we reached the decision that they were probably not going to return the engine, and we filed a missing vehicle report with the sheriff's Ddepartment," Mecham said. The county says whoever is harboring the fire engine is not giving up. So who has it?"There's nothing I can say about that," Newman said. She did not know where the fire truck was being held, adding, "I think if you have questions about that, you should talk to Mr. Briggs."10News called attorney Cory Briggs, who represents the volunteer department, but calls were never returned. Mecham said if the truck were returned tomorrow, they do not wish to press charges. They just want this new era of the County Fire Department to begin before fire season. "There is equipment there that the county would certainly like to refurbish and put right back into the community," Mecham said. "And we've been prohibited from doing that."Both parties say they hope to resolve the issue quickly through the courts and will accept the legal outcome. 2893
