With more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States, San Diego powwows help keep those traditions alive."We all try to come together and share the culture, do the best we can to teach our children. I was born and raised on the reservation, but my kids were not, so it's hard to instill the same teachings that I was brought up with," said Emerald Arnold, born and raised on the Navajo reservation.Children and adults dressed in colorful regalia for the powwow, which was held Saturday at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. "When there's music provided, our ancestors hear them, and they smile upon us.Cadotte says powwows bring him closer to his ancestors and his heritage. "We can be recognized. We can have our rights restored, our heritage recognized."Native American veterans were honored at the powwow, including 102-year-old Joe Renteria, a World War II Navy veteran."It brings different people here, and it's just like a family reunion, that's what it amounts to."While each tribe has its own teachings, culture, and traditions, they come together as one at the powwow. "That's kind of what the goal is, is to try to teach our children, so our traditions and our culture doesn't die."On two Wednesdays a month, the Ballard Center holds dance classes open to all students and free of charge.They host cultural activities every Tuesday night. 1741

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are furious about a new dress code rule for girls at one of San Diego’s most prestigious private high schools. Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley announced Friday girls would no longer be allowed to wear skirts. That led to a backlash among students, who signed a petition to reverse the change. “I think that the ban is very sexist,” said student Lana Owad. In a letter sent to parents and students, CCHS said the dress code exists to foster a faith-based environment where students are focused on learning and not outward appearances. CCHS has issued thousands of hours of detention related to the lengths of girls’ skirts. The school dress code posted online indicates girls were allowed to wear skirts or skorts that were not excessively tight or form fitting and were no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the kneecap while standing upright.“We’ve had them tailored in the past because of the restriction on it. We spent money on buying different skirts because they ban other styles for us to wear,” said student Riley Staal. Mimi Cleary said the change was prompted by adults, not students. “No one wants the skirts going, like, literally, no one wants the skirts gone. I think only the principal and teachers want the skirts gone,” said Cleary. Under the new dress code, girls can wear pants, Bermuda shorts, or capri pants. The school said girls aren't the only ones having dress code problems: the administration will also be holding boys more accountable about their facial hair next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's newly renamed Museum of Us will reopen to visitors this week.The museum, formerly called the Museum of Man, will reopen on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. under the state's new guidelines for museums during the coronavirus pandemic.The Museum of Us will operate at 25% capacity when it reopens and all guests will be required to wear a face covering. Other measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 include:Plexiglass is in place at the admission desk to minimize contact.Guests are required to keep 6 feet of distance between other visitors.Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum.Guests will be given a personal pencil to use throughout interactive exhibits.Guests will be provided a suggested linear path of travel to promote social distancing.Handrails and other surfaces throughout the museum are frequently sanitized for your safety.The museum is encouraging guests to also purchase their tickets ahead of time online or by using debit or credit cars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is introducing a pilot program aimed at reducing fines and plans to move to a zero-emission fleet by 2040.MTS' Board of Directors approved the pilot program recently that will give fare violators new options to pay citations and lower fines. Under the new policy starting in September:Passengers have 120 days to pay fines to MTS in-person at the Transit Store or by mail;Passengers who can't pay a fine can instead perform 3-4 hours of community service through the San Diego Food Bank, with more organizations potentially added later;Passengers can appeal a fare violation within 15 days of the citation;Only citations not paid within 120 days will proceed to criminal courts.The transportation agency says it also plans to convert 800 buses to zero-emissions, most of which will be electric, by 2040.Currently, MTS' zero-emissions pilot program includes eight electric buses, and infrastructure and hardware for 12 new charging stations. The pilot program started in October 2018 and costs about .4 million.MTS plans to purchase its last natural gas buses in 2028.The agency operates about 95 bus routes and three Trolley lines in San Diego County. 1227
