President Donald Trump praised Montana Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte for assaulting a reporter during his campaign last May, saying "any guy who can do a body slam ... he's my guy" and made a gesture mimicking a body slam.At a Montana rally Thursday night, Trump admitted, "I shouldn't say this," but continued and said, "there's nothing to be embarrassed about."The comment comes at the same time as the administration responds to the disappearance and apparent murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on October 2 and Turkish media reports that an audio recording suggests Khashoggi was tortured and killed soon after entering the building before being dismembered.Trump said Thursday "it certainly looks" like Khashoggi is dead. But, Trump said he is "waiting for the results" of investigations being conducted by Saudi Arabia and Turkey, after which he pledged to make "a very strong statement." 1010

President Donald Trump on Wednesday fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions."At your request I am submitting my resignation," Sessions wrote in a letter to White House chief of staff John Kelly.Matthew Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general, the President said.Whitaker is expected to take charge of the the Russia investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein."We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well ...We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date," Trump tweeted. The move is an abrupt end to what had been a tumultuous tenure for Sessions, originally one of Trump's earliest and most loyal surrogates as an Alabama Republican senator. He was a key figure in implementing Trump's vision for America and significantly rolled back Obama-era policies on immigration, police reform and civil rights.Sessions was an enforcer of much of the Trump administration's hardline approach on immigration and regularly praised the President's tough words on crime. But even as he continued to carry out the Trump agenda, his relationship with the President remained strained and fraught for months due to the ongoing Mueller investigation.Sessions received the request to resign from Kelly, not the President, on Wednesday morning, an administration official said. It is not clear whether Mueller was told ahead of time.  1656

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A 27-acre parcel in Black Mountain Ranch once planned to be the site of a new middle school could instead turn into a Costco development. The Poway Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to pursue a long-term lease with Costco to transform the site into a mixed-use retail, restaurant, and housing complex, plus a warehouse. The district has twice declared the property at the northeast corner of Camino del Sur and Carmel Valley Road as surplus: first in 2012, and then reaffirmed in 2019. "This site has an extremely lucrative opportunity for the district and I, for one, don't see how we can turn this down," said board president Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff. "Let Costco go figure out what the community will accept."The move, however, is being met with concern from parents in the district. Chasmine Grismer, a district parent who has lived near the Black Mountain Ranch site for a decade, expressed concern over traffic, the environment, wildfire evacuation, and demand on schools. "By bringing in an apartment complex, you're going to be bringing in families, families with children, who again will need space in schools. Our schools are already impacted," she said. A spokesman for Costco declined to comment, saying the company does not address upcoming real-estate transactions. 1330

President Donald Trump reacted to the news that Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to Congress about the Russia investigation, calling his former lawyer "very weak.""He's a weak person," Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn before departing for Buenos Aires, Argentina."He was convicted with a fairly long-term sentence with things unrelated to the Trump Organization," Trump said, citing Cohen's legal issues with mortgages and the IRS.Trump speculated that "what he's trying to do is get a reduced sentence."Cohen admitted in federal court Thursday that Trump spoke with him more extensively about the proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow than Cohen previously told Congress.Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, pleaded guilty Thursday to making false statements to Congress about the Russia investigation in a charge brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.Cohen had previously said talks about the Moscow project ended in January 2016 just prior to the Iowa caucuses.Trump later reiterated his disparagement of Cohen: "What he's trying to do -- because he's a weak person and not a very smart person.""What he's trying to do -- and it's very simple, he's got himself a big prison sentence and he's trying to get a much lesser prison sentence by making up a story," Trump said.Trump was emphatic that Cohen was "lying," but it is unclear what he believes Cohen is lying about."Michael Cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence for things that have nothing to do with me," he said. The President defended the deal for a possible Trump real estate venture in Moscow. The project, Trump said, "lasted a short period of time," adding that he decided not to do it because he wanted to focus on running for President. However, he maintained that "there would've been nothing wrong if I did do it."Asked why he worked with Cohen for so long, Trump said, "Because a long time ago he did me a favor. A long time ago he did me a favor."Trump denied that Cohen is a threat to his presidency when asked by CNN's Kaitlan Collins."No," Trump said. "Not at all. I'm not worried at all about him." 2137
