CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- South Bay junior and senior high school families learned Monday they will need to stand fast at home a little longer after district officials said they will not reopen campuses for physical learning this year.The Sweetwater Union High School District announced that students will continue distance learning through December 2020 citing "significantly higher" COVID-19 cases within the district's communities.The announcement comes as local health officials wait to hear if the state will place San Diego County back into the purple tier -- the most restrictive level on California's coronavirus reopening road map. Such a move would likely shutter indoor operations for restaurants, movie theaters, houses of worship and gyms, limit retail businesses to just 25% capacity. Chula Vista reported 5,603 COVID-19 cases making up 12.7% of the county's total cases, according to the latest county health data. "It is with this information, and with our continued commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff, that we announce the continuation of distance learning for the remainder of the semester through December 2020," the district said in an email to families."As was outlined in our reopening plan earlier in the summer, our next checkpoint will be by November 30, 2020, to determine how we will start the second semester in January 2021," officials said.SUHSD is the first school district to commit to closing its campuses through the remainder of the year.The district kicked off its school year online on Aug. 3, the first district in the county to start the fall semester.Under the distance learning model, students are attending three virtual classes per day with 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with each teacher. The remaining time is spent in independent study.The district said that they are researching ways to provide in-person services to "some of our highest needs students," and the possibility of small group supports if pandemic conditions improve."During this incredibly challenging time, we will continue to closely monitor the latest information and work with our local health agencies and our partners to ensure that we are doing what is in the best public health interest of the entire community," officials said.The district said it will again review its next steps on Nov. 30 to determine how it will start the second semester in January 2021. 2577

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Four Eastlake Middle School students were arrested Wednesday after reportedly bringing an “explosive device on campus.” According to the Chula Vista Police, school resource officers with the department were called to the school after receiving reports of an explosive device found on campus. After arriving, officers learned that the device had already been detonated. No students were harmed and no property damaged, police say. "Old Town looks normal on weekends believe it or not. Parking is hard to find, it's encouraging for us," said Tafoya.His tiny shop, The American House, nestled in the historic district has been closed for nearly half a year and survived thanks to online sales. "We tried to do curbside for bulk items, and online helped us out."He's now ready to pivot from virtual communication, back to in-person. "We're doing kind of a like a walk-by. They walk through the front, order through an old fashioned window, and grab their drink. If they want to buy bulk, they just walk in," Tofoya described.They'll start slow and open on weekends but will extend hours if needed, "If business picks up, we're ready to go."While online sales helped during their store closure, they also had to file unemployment. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue.  Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this:  Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary.  We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force.However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts.  Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country.  Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side.  Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol.  He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598

(KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom.The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences.
