CARLSBAD (KGTV) - Among the businesses saying Trump's trade war is hurting is San Diego born JLab, a booming audio company competing with huge brands.The Silicon Valley-style company in Carlsbad is buzzing as you walk through the large modern rectangular door."This company was four people four years ago, but now we're 40." CEO Win Cramer said they have lived the American Dream, saying they're a scrappy business always fighting to get on top."We worked out of literally, a house, or a rundown office or an apartment building forever," he said. JLab competes against major brands like Bose and Beats.They found a niche and made a name for themselves, "We came out with some fun colorful designs that happened to be on trend."Cramer said innovation is their secret weapon."It gives you the option to really tune out on a plane, you push a button and the engine noise goes away," explaining one of their earbuds.Their newest challenge is Trump's trade war. Billions of dollars in tariffs imposed on China are going into effect, and while all of the design work is done in Carlsbad, 100% of JLab's product is shipped from China.Cramer was sitting on a plane when he saw the alert, "this news pops up on my phone that 0 billion in tariffs announced, I quickly perused the list and saw our tariff code that we import 80% of our products was on the list and I just had this feeling of oh gosh we're going to have to fight this battle that we don't know how to fight."He is bending every ear within reach to spread awareness of how this affects JLab and other American businesses and even went to Washington DC to plead his case.Cramer said no legislators were there, just staffers and no electronic devices were allowed into the room. He said there is a written record of what was said."It was the largest hearing in US history which in it of itself should tell you something and how folks are, at least businesses like us are taking this pretty serious," he said.Production costs could increase by 25% and with the holiday season upon us, he's running out of options, "layoffs or pay cuts being the last option, certainly not something that I want to do or think about or consider, but it's something we're being forced to consider."He hopes change is swift and those in power hear his plea.He said the company will find out in mid-September how big the changes will be, and will see impacts as early as October. Bulked-up, mutant “mighty mice” held onto their muscle during a monthlong stay at the International Space Station, returning to Earth with ripped bodybuilder physiques, scientists reported Monday.The findings hold promise for preventing muscle and bone loss in astronauts on prolonged space trips like Mars missions, as well as people on Earth who are confined to bed or need wheelchairs.A research team led by Dr. Se-Jin Lee of the Jackson Laboratory in Connecticut sent 40 young female black mice to the space station in December, launching aboard a SpaceX rocket.In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lee said the 24 regular untreated mice lost considerable muscle and bone mass in weightlessness as expected — up to 18%.But the eight genetically engineered “mighty mice” launched with double the muscle maintained their bulk. Their muscles appeared to be comparable to similar “mighty mice” that stayed behind at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.In addition, eight normal mice that received “mighty mouse” treatment in space returned to Earth with dramatically bigger muscles. The treatment involves blocking a pair of proteins that typically limit muscle mass.A SpaceX capsule brought all 40 mice back in good condition, parachuting into the Pacific off the California coast in January. Some of the ordinary mice were injected with the “mighty mice” drug after returning and quickly built up more muscle than their untreated companions, Lee said.The scientists completed the experiment just as the coronavirus was hitting the U.S.“The only silver lining of COVID is that we had time to write it up very intensively” and submit the results for publication, said Dr. Emily Germain-Lee of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Lee’s wife who also took part in the study. CARLSBAD, Calif. — A North County company says it's closing in on the technology to keep lithium-ion batteries from igniting.In the last year, the rechargeable batteries have caught fire in Teslas, E-cigarettes, and smartphones. The incidents led to an emergency ban by the Federal Aviation Administration prohibiting shipping the batteries on passenger planes. "The issue has always been there, but now I think because lithium is so prevalent, we're seeing increased cases," said Jenna King, chief executive of Carlsbad-based Amionix.Kings said the industry has largely focused on protecting the battery from the outside, such as through cooling systems and protective layers. She said the batteries ignite due to an overcharge situation or internal short-circuit. Amionix instead is developing what it's calling SafeCore, essentially a circuit breaker on the inside to keep the battery from igniting. "If your battery management fails, or it's never even active because it's an internal short within the cell, our technology is going to protect you," King said. King said Amionix is now working with companies across industries to make sure their product works with their technologies. She declined to specify the companies but said they are well-known. She hopes to have the safety product in consumers' hands by next year, noting that it's inexpensive to manufacture and therefore should have a negligible impact on consumer prices. 1445
