NANJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A powerful explosion at a factory in eastern China's Nanjing City Wednesday has left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured, including 14 critically, the city government said.Officials of the government of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, told a press conference Wednesday evening that 10 people were killed and 14 others suffered serious injuries after the blast at 10:11 a.m. ripped through an abandoned plastics factory in northern Nanjing's Xixia District.Further, more than 120 people have been hospitalized, according to the official. The death toll, which is based on the number of bodies so far recovered, could climb as rescuers are still clearing the explosion site and some injured people are reported to be in very critical condition. The blast was caused by a gas leak after a propylene pipeline was damaged as workers dismantled factory buildings of the Nanjing No. 4 Plastics Factory, said a statement from the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS).The rescue headquarters say an excavator owned by Yangzhou Hongyuan Construction and Development Co., Ltd. hit a a pipe of 159 mm in diameter. The gas leak started at 9:56 a.m. and explosion occurred at 10:11 a.m.Gas supply was cut off a minute later, said Liu Zhaohua, deputy head of Nanjin's work safety bureau. The excavator operator, whose identity was not revealed, has been held by police for investigation. The explosion occurred when a motorist started a car engine at the scene, igniting the leaking gas, the SAWS statement said, without saying if the motorist was among the victims. Some rescuers and repairmen who had come to handle the gas leak may have died in the explosion, the headquarters said.

Xi'AN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China's economic performance is consistent with the government's macro-economic controls while on a three-day visit to Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, that ended Sunday.Wen visited Shaanxi Automobile Group Co. Ltd. The 42-year-old company is one of China's top five truck producers.Wen inspected an assembly line that produces a heavy truck every six minutes. He also talked with workers and fitted wheels to a tractor truck under the workers' direction."We must maintain the continuity and stability of macro-economic policies to ensure favorable external conditions for enterprises. But a company's growth ultimately relies on its inner drive. Companies should improve quality, develop new products and expand their market," he said.Wen also visited Shaanxi Huasheng (Group) Corp. Fruit Co. Ltd., a high-tech agriculture company in the apple industry. The company has production bases in more than 20 counties."The global economy is recovering, but at a slow pace. There are many uncertainties. We should expand domestic demand while stabilizing overseas demand," he said."Only through sound and relatively fast economic growth can we ensure employment and facilitate the restructuring of the economic development mode," he said.Wen also visited the Sixth Research Institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the Northwest Institute for Non-ferrous Metals Research."The world is experiencing a technological revolution and one of its key fields is materials technology. We must always remember that high technologies cannot be bought. We have to rely on ourselves," he said.Wen visited Zhujiang New Town, a residential community providing affordable housing for low-income groups. There, he entered the home of 72-year-old He Jing, a retired teacher.

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in several south China provinces issued flood alerts on Monday after a new round of storms is expected to pound the region that still reels from recent floodings. The national weather forecast says much of southern China, including provinces such as Guangdong, Guizhou, Jiangxi and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are to experience storms in coming days. Many of the areas were drenched in last month's wide-scale heavy rains.A resident rows a raft in Chengjiang Town of Yao Autonomous County of Du'an, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, June 7, 2010. Flood still remains in some parts of Du'an on June 7, seven days after heavy rainstorms killed 38 people. In the worst-hit Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the government on Monday said death toll from recent landslides and flooding has climbed to 53.Forty-two counties in nine Guangxi cities were affected. In Chengxiang village, people were forced to row make-shift boats -- made of plastic bottles and planks -- to commute through the flooded streets.Chen Jian, the region's chief weather forecaster, said heavy rains are expected to fall on six Guangxi cities from June 7 to 10.Local disaster relief officials were ordered to evacuate residents in low-lying areas in advance. Safety measures at reservoirs shall also be reviewed, officials said.In Jiangxi Province, where mudslides recently derailed a train and flooding forced the evacuation of 90,000 residents, government departments and agencies were ordered to ramp up flood prevention measures.Schools, coal mines, markets and other populated areas will be carefully monitored to prevent accidents that could lead to massive casualties, according to officials. The alert noted that water levels in Jiangxi's reservoirs and waterways remain high, posing serious threats to the government's flood prevention work.Alarms also rang in central Hubei Province. The provincial meteorological bureau forecast heavy storms to hit Hubei from June 7 to 8 and might trigger flooding in its southern mountainous areas.By June 3, floods have killed 125 people and left 34 people missing all over China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said.More than 23.09 million people and 1.55 million hectares of crops were affected. Direct economic losses amounted to 16.9 billion yuan (2.47 billion U.S. dollars), it said.

JILIN, Jilin Province, July 29 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 barrels filled with chemicals have been swept into a major river in northeast China's Jilin Province, thousands more than originally thought, authorities said Thursday.Another 4,000 empty barrels have also entered the river, officials said at a press conference Thursday morning. On Wednesday, authorities said around 1,000 barrels had entered the Songhuajiang River in Jilin City.Barrels were spotted in the river Wednesday, but it is not known when they entered the waterway. The barrels first entered the Wende River and then flowed into the Songhuajiang River, after floods hit the storage facilities of two chemical factories -- Jilin Xinyaqiang Biochem Co. Ltd. and Jilin Zhongxin Group. Each chemical-filled barrel contains about 170 kilograms of chemicals.Of the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels, about 2,500 barrels contain trimethyl chloro silicane -- a colorless flammable liquid with a pungent odor -- while 500 contain hexamethyl disilazane -- a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Officials said emergency workers and soldiers are rushing to retrieve the barrels. Workers are collecting the barrels at eight points on the river. About 400 have been recovered so far.Seven stations have been established to monitor water contamination.
