As Congress mulls over the possibility of another stimulus package, and the idea of including a second wave of stimulus checks in it, the House Ways and Means Committee estimates 30 to 35 million Americans are still waiting on their stimulus money from the CARES Act.“Let’s make sure that we don’t lose focus on the people who didn’t get a payment from the first branch,” said Bob Probasco.Probasco is a CPA and the director of the Low Income Tax Clinic at Texas A&M University. He has followed activity with stimulus checks since they started going out in April, in particular, all of the issues the IRS has had in getting the money into taxpayers’ hands.“There are just a number of different problems,” said Probasco. "People had old bank account information on their tax returns, and then, they changed their bank account, but the IRS doesn’t have the new one. The payment went to the bank, it will have to be returned and then a paper check will go out.”The IRS attempted to speed payments up in May by sending out prepaid debit cards to 4 million people, but the debit cards were not as helpful as anticipated and resulted in the IRS continuing to distribute paper checks for the remaining payments.“There were big problems with that,” Probasco explained. “We saw tax representatives, CPAs, lawyers, who people came to and said, ‘I got this’ and they weren’t sure that was legitimate.”The debit cards were sent in barely-marked envelopes that caused so many to think they were fake. So, the IRS had to issue a press release, reminding people that the “plain envelope from Money Network Cardholder Services” is not junk mail.In addition, the IRS had to issue guidance for those who destroyed or threw out their debit cards, asking them to call 1-800-240-8100. Anyone else who hasn’t received a debit card or stimulus check payment can go to the IRS’s Check My Payment feature on its website.“If you see on there that a payment was sent out, but you didn’t get the payment, there is a different number that you can call which is 1-800-919-9835,” Probasco said.The good news is the IRS expects to get all the stimulus payments out ahead of the initial September timeline, and a proposed second round of stimulus checks could go smoother.“There will be some improvements because the IRS has learned some lessons,” said Probasco. 2341

As hundreds of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School prepare to board buses to lobby lawmakers to demand gun control, a measure was struck down on Tuesday by the Republican-held Florida House that would ban assault weapons. The motion was denied by a whopping 71-36 tally. Tuesday's vote came six days after a confessed gunman killed 17 lives at the Parkland, Florida high school. Many of the 3,000 students of the high school have since been vocal in their opposition to status quo gun laws, with the hope of increasing restrictions to posses firearms. The accused gunman, Nikolas Cruz, used an AR-15 type weapon during his massacre, which only lasted several minutes before he tried to blend in with students escaping the school. According to the Associated Press, the bill will likely no longer be considered during this session of the legislature.  898

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday at the age of 27, stunning Major League Baseball and leading to the postponement of the team's game against the Texas Rangers.Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they are investigating, but no foul play is suspected at this time.Skaggs was "an important part of the Angels Family," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time."Skaggs had been a regular in the Angels' starting rotation since late 2016, when he returned from Tommy John surgery. Anyone who plans to travel internationally should get tested for COVID-19 before and after their trip, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.In addition, the CDC says anyone returning from international travel should isolate for at least seven days — even if they test negative for COVID-19 upon their return.Planning aheadIn the new guidance published to its website, the CDC recommends travelers plan ahead several weeks before travel. The CDC says to avoid high-risk activities like large social gatherings (parties, weddings, funerals, sporting events), indoor recreation (bars, restaurants, fitness centers) and taking public transportation for at least two weeks.As the travel date approaches, the CDC recommends receiving a test between one and three days before boarding an international flight — but also to make sure test results are available before the flight departs. If the test results aren't back in time, the CDC recommends delaying travel.The CDC stresses that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should not travel — anyone who tests positive should immediately isolate and follow public health recommendations.The CDC also says that anyone who tests negative should still wear a mask, maintain 6 feet of social distance and wash hands frequently while traveling."A negative test does not mean that you were not exposed or that you will not develop COVID-19," the CDC says on its website.Finally, travelers should carry a copy of their test results with them — officials in other countries may ask to see them.Upon ReturnUpon return to the U.S., travelers should get another COVID-19 test within three to five days upon return. Even if that test comes back negative, the CDC urges a full week of self-isolation."You may have been exposed to COVID-19 on your travels. You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can be contagious without symptoms and spread the virus to others. You and your travel companions (including children) pose a risk to your family, friends, and community for 14 days after you were exposed to the virus," the CDC writes on its website.Anyone who chooses not to get tested upon their return to the U.S. should stay home for 14 days.Places where it's safe to travelThe CDC's website also includes risk assessment maps to help travelers determine where COVID-19 is spreading.
