Peak flu season is starting now, and doctors say to get ready for a potentially extended season. This year’s flu season has been rough, with the CDC reporting the flu is widespread in 24 states, with 19 states reporting high levels of flu activity. That's more than double the activity of the previous week. A total of 13 children have died so far this flu season. Doctors say it could get worse. “Flu activity has taken off our projection is that it's going to continue to increase, probably for the next few months,” says Dr. Andrew Walshak with Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Walshak says he expects to see more flu cases around the country. “The graph of flu activity in our hospital is just increasing,” he explains. “It's just a slow upward, so we're only at the beginning of flu season right now.” Everyone is at risk: your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. “It can really affect the lungs and affect our ability to get oxygen in our bodies, and that's what primarily the fatalities have been caused by his severe breathing problems,” he says. Dr. Walshak says it's not too late to get the flu shot. It wouldn't be Fourth of July without fireworks, but the fireworks industry is now bracing itself for a potential bombshell in terms of their bottom lines if a trade deal with China isn't finalized. "If the 25 percent tariff is imposed on importing fireworks, it could have a devastating impact on the U.S. firework industry,” says Julie Heckman with the American Pyrotechnics Association. Heckman says President Trump's threat of a 25 percent tariff--or tax--on over 0 billion worth of Chinese goods could, if enacted, hurt the U.S. fireworks retailers. "In the U.S., we import 99 percent of our backyard fireworks from China, and over 75 percent of professional display fireworks,” explains Heckman. Any new tariff wouldn't have an impact on this year’s supply, but the fear is for the upcoming New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July in 2020. The costs associated with the new tariffs could be passed on to the consumer, as well as the thousands of cities nationwide that put on bigger displays. "We're really worried about the 16,000 Independence Day holidays that are put on in this country by small townships and municipalities that are already cash strapped,” says Heckman. “They’re struggling to have the money to fund their Fourth of July show. Another 25 percent would be crippling." Three days later, Sydney died unexpectedly. Officials say a preliminary necropsy shows Sydney died of a "systemic infection" - which begins in one area and then moves to the bloodstream, affecting the entire body.The pup, who has not yet been named, is being hand-raised by zookeepers and animal care staff. He was the fifth pup born to Sydney and her companion, Ringo."Keepers are assist-feeding the pup five times daily with a milk replacer formula made specifically for marine mammals which includes a high fat content and vitamins," a news release from the Zoo says. "Normally, harbor seals nurse 4-6 weeks before weaning. In the meantime, finely ground fish is gradually being added to the formula. LAKE POWELL, Utah — A baby from St. George has set the record for the youngest child to water-ski, his family says.Casey and Mindi Humpherys posted a photo and a video of 6-month-old Rich skiing at Lake Powell on Instagram earlier this week, captioned "I went water skiing for my 6 month birthday. Apparently that’s a big deal… #worldrecord" on an account dedicated to photos of the boy growing up and going on outdoor adventures. His parents, on their own individual Instagram accounts, specified that Rich was six months and four days old at the time — beating the youngest-known record by six days. The previous record was set by Auburn Absher in 2016 at six months and 10 days old, according to reports from BuzzFeed and ABC News.
