Many school budgets don't always cover the costs of everything students and teachers need. Fundraisers throughout the year can help, but with many schools learning remotely this fall, school leaders are reimagining how to raise money."This year was even easier because you could be in your pajamas and you could really be with your whole family. Our galas tend to be kind of fancy. We all have dinner and drinks and dancing and all the things we usually do. This year, we flipped all of that on its head and took a little bit of a quirky approach," said Tracey Carson, the Public Information Officer for Mason City Schools in Ohio.Carson says the Mason Schools Foundation Gala normally raises 0,000 each year in order to provide grants for teachers. This year, the gala went virtual in order to raise those crucial funds. Organizers were able to still raise ,000."Fundraisers and things from your PTOs and foundations ending up filing in that gap for all of those things that we find that spark and innovation. That really incredible idea that hasn't yet turned into a big enough priority that it's going to get a line item in a school budget somewhere but will really make a difference," said Carson.A number of school districts say it's still important for schools to hold fundraisers during remote learning."I think in many ways, we’re still working hard to stay connected to our families and to our kids. Whether that's the virtual parent meeting, we have to talk about homework or talk about social emotional wellness with our kids right now, or it's that fundraising activity that pulls us together around an action of some kind," said Kelly Avants, Chief Communication Officer for Clovis Unified School District in California.Avants says it's critical for school communities to build strong relationships with their families during remote learning. Some of the funds being raised will make up for money that was lost when schools shut down in March."With those events that were canceled in the spring and trying to recoup costs for some of our performing arts programs that are already in arrears because they lost money, whether it was about an event that couldn’t be held that usually brings in revenue that funds extras in a program or in general of recouping the expenses they already fronted and then they had to cancel a production or shorten a show run," said Avants. From virtual fun runs to restaurant take out to benefit a local school, educators say any small donations can make a big impact on school campuses. 2541

Members of the Oakland Raiders have denied a claim from the wife of an NFL player that members of the Raiders offensive line allowed quarterback Derek Carr to get hurt due to a dispute over national anthem protests.Miko Grimes, wife of Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Brent Grimes and co-star of the reality show "Baller Wives" on VH1, claimed Carr's injury during a game earlier this season was directly related to an anthem dispute with his teammates."The reason Derek Carr got injured is because the Raiders' offensive line allowed him to get injured because he was against them protesting," Grimes said on Revolt TV, a digital network created by Sean "Diddy" Combs.Grimes said Carr was opposed to players sitting or kneeling during the national anthem, which led to a pregame dispute with members of the Raiders' offensive line, the only all-minority offensive line in the NFL. 899

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville Metro Police Department has released the incident report from the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in her apartment, but it’s almost entirely blank. The release of the report comes nearly three months after the 26-year-old ER technician was shot and killed by officers in her South End home in the early morning hours of March 13.The four-page report, obtained by the Courier Journal and New York Magazine, lists some basic details like the time, date, case number, incident location and the victim’s name and age.The report also lists Taylor’s injuries as “none,” even though she was shot eight times before dying in the hall of her apartment. The report lists three “offenders” – officers Jon Mattingly, 47, Myles Cosgrove, 42, and Brett Hankison, 44.Under charges, the document describes the incident as a “death investigation – LMPD involved” and says there was no forced entry, even though officers used a battering ram to knock down Taylor’s door.Lastly, for the “public narrative” section of the report, the department only wrote “PIU investigation."In a statement obtained by the Courier Journal, the police department acknowledged errors in the report and said they were the result of a reporting program creating a paper file. The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, has called the report “unacceptable.”“Full stop. It’s issues like this that erode public confidence in @LMPD's ability to do its job, and that’s why I’ve ordered an external top-to-bottom review of the department,” wrote Fischer on Twitter Wednesday night. “I am sorry for the additional pain to the Taylor family and our community.”Officers responded to Taylor’s home with a no-knock search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Records show that she was not the main target of the probe, but she and her apartment were named on the warrant.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot that struck one of the cops in the leg. He was arrested on an attempted murder charge that night, but that charge has since been dropped.Since Taylor’s death, the three officers involved, and the detective who requested the no-knock warrant, have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports. And, the FBI has launched its own investigation into the case. "The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence and will ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, thorough and impartial manner," the FBI Louisville Field Office said in a statement. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to comment further at this time." 2665

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani "embarrassed the state" on Wednesday in a Michigan House Oversight Committee Wednesday night in which he again attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state. The meeting featured Giuliani questioning witnesses he brought, as well as unverified and false claims regarding election fraud in the city of Detroit.Nessel, a Democrat, said that Republican members of the committee "embarrassed our state and defamed Michigan's most populous city."Nessel also called on Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox to "put up or shut up" and instead take the evidence Republicans say they have of election fraud to her office for investigation. While Trump has been attempting for several weeks to overturn the results of the election citing widespread voter fraud, his legal team has presented little evidence to support his claim.Attorney General Bill Barr, one of Trump's staunchest defenders, said this week that the DOJ uncovered no evidence of widespread fraud that would change the election results.Several witnesses presented by Giuliani Wednesday say they saw irregularities and fraud while counting ballots at Detroit's TCF Center after polls closed. There is no evidence that proves those claims, and judges have ruled against lawsuits that argued the same claims brought in front of the committee.Giuliani also claimed as he has for weeks that thousands of votes were cast illegally despite offering no evidence to support his claim.Michigan has already certified the results of the November election, with president-elect Joe Biden winning the state by more than 150,000 votes. This story was originally published by Max White on WXYZ in Detroit. 1776

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Residents of the town of Sonoyta, across from Lukeville, Ariz., briefly blocked the main road leading south from the U.S. border over fears of coronavirus outbreaks. Arizona has seen a major upsurge in infections, and there were worries about intensified contagion during the July 4 weekend. The mayor of Sonoyta issued a statement "inviting U.S. tourists not to visit Mexico." Local residents organized to block the road with their cars on the Mexican side. The road is the quickest route to the seaside resort of Puerto Pe?asco, also known as Rocky Point. 584
