NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, a leading performer of American roots music known for his introspective and haunting style, has died at age 38.New West Records publicist Brady Brock confirmed his death, but did not immediately provide details.Earle was the son of country star Steve Earle and over the weekend his family posted a Facebook announcement of his death, telling his fans that they hope his music will continue to guide them for years to come.His family also posted lyrics from the ballad “Looking for a Place to Land,” from Earle’s 2014 album “Single Mothers.” 603
New security measures were enforced as students of Santa Fe High School in Texas returned for the new school year Monday.The security changes come after a student opened fire on May 18, killing 10 students.The most noticeable security addition: metal detectors. Other renovations at the high school include the installation of bullet-proof glass, a secure entrance vestibule and even panic buttons in the classrooms. Interior doors were upgraded to lock from the inside and outside and 500 security cameras were installed district wide. Additionally, the school hired extra police offers, five of which will work fulltime.“Well, it's a very typical reaction from what we’ve seen in a lot of schools in the wake of spring of ’18,” says Amy Klinger.Klinger, a school safety expert with The Educator’s School Safety Network, says on one hand she’s glad to see more schools like Santa Fe investing in new measures, but she cautions money also needs to be spent on the teachers, too.“Are we combining buying stuff with actually training people?” asks Klinger. “Probably a single point of entry is a good idea, but not if you haven't provided people with training on how to screen visitors who are coming in.”Since teachers themselves are the first line of defense, The Educators School Safety Network is urging all schools to consider training faculty to better recognize out of ordinary behavior.“We know that anywhere between 80 to 85 percent of all perpetrators are students in that school, so who is working with those students? Educators,” says Klinger. “So, we need to invest in those people that see those kids every single day and to give them tools and resources and training to be able to pick up on students who are at risk.” 1739
NEW YORK — The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won't march through Manhattan this year as it traditionally has for decades, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.In a statement, Macy's said that while it won't be able to utilize its traditional parade route, the event will still be broadcast nationwide on Thanksgiving morning. The made-for-TV special will showcase all the balloons, floats and performances of the parade from Herald Square in Manhattan, and will still be capped off with an appearance by Santa Claus.While the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, de Blasio said large gatherings like parades still have to wait."It will not be the same parade we're used to," the mayor said. "It will be a different kind of event. They're reinventing the event for this moment in history."De Blasio assured that people will still be able to feel "the spirit and joy" of the event that day both on television and online."Not a live parade, but something that will really give us that warmth and that great feeling we have on Thanksgiving day," he said.Macy's and the city previously worked to reinvent their iconic Fourth of July fireworks display over this past summer.Other changes to the parade include:Balloons anchored to vehicles instead of held by attendantsNo participants under 18 years oldNo appearances by high school or college bands. NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. EMS responded and pronounced the mother dead at the scene.Later Wednesday, police announced Aponte's adult son was arrested in connection with her death.Police believe Steven Castro, 40, struck his mother in the head with an object during a "jealous rage."It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sparked the man's rage.Castro is now facing charges including murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom at WPIX. 949
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple Music is launching several new radio shows hosted by A-list musical acts, including Snoop Dogg, Shania Twain, and Carrie Underwood. The streaming service announced that it would debut two new radio stations Tuesday: Apple Music Hits focused on popular songs of the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, as well as Apple Music Country, dedicated to the country music genre. “For the past five years, if ever there was a meaningful moment in music culture, Beats 1 was there bringing human curation to the forefront and drawing in listeners with exclusive shows from some of the most innovative, respected, and beloved people in music,” said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music, Beats, and International Content in a news release. “Now, Apple Music radio provides an unparalleled global platform for artists across all genres to talk about, create, and share music with their fans, and this is just the beginning. We will continue to invest in live radio and create opportunities for listeners around the world to connect with the music they love.”Both channels will have daily on-air hosts but will also include several shows hosted by well-known musicians.
