SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950

With large weddings still on hold, couples remain in limbo.“These are people who’ve planned their weddings, spent a year, maybe two years, planning their wedding. And it’s just starting to crumble beneath them a little bit. Everything is being just ripped away, all these things they had planned," said Sara Whittaker, owner of Desert Born Studios in San Diego. And when weddings came to a halt, so did Whittaker's livelihood. “I looked at a lot of my other friends who are vendors in this industry and watched their years kind of plummet. And everyone struggling financially and still wanting to work,” said Whittaker. Knowing vendors were in need of work, and couples eager to get married, Whittaker set out to create a COVID-friendly wedding experience.“As a small business owner you really have to adapt or die," she said. "If you can’t figure out a way to roll with the punches that the world gives you, you’re not going to make it.”Teaming up with industry vendors, she crafted an all-inclusive wedding elopement experience. The ,500 package includes florals, hair and makeup, photos, video, and a wedding officiant. Couples can invite up to 15 people to the elopement ceremony in Joshua Tree National Park.Bree Steffen, owner of Pause Creative Collective, built and designed a desert-themed ceremony backdrop. "It was just really cool to be a part of something this intimate and special while still being safe. It was awesome to capture these couples being so strong and committed to each other and finding a safe way to celebrate their love, even during a pandemic!" said Steffen, who is also the event videographer. After months of wedding planning stress and anxiety, Izzy Van Vleet opted for the desert elopement soon after hearing about it. “We had a big warehouse venue picked out, with 200 guests. It was going to be a big celebration. I had a lot of the planning done and it didn't look like those plans were going to work out." said Van Vleet.She liked the idea of an intimate wedding with her closest friends and family. “Now, we get to spend time with the people that are most important, that we would’ve wanted to spend time with anyway and just really celebrate our love and getting married," said Van Vleet. “It’s not so much about who’s got the biggest floral budget or the most expensive dress. It’s about marrying the person you love, and having those people that you love the very most being able to witness it as well," said Whittaker.
