FUZHOU, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- A minibus rolled over and fell into a reservoir in Shaowu City in southeast China's Fujian Province Friday afternoon, killing 10, local officials said early Saturday morning.Nine people were rescued, and two were still missing.The minibus bound for Shaowu from Yong'an lost control at 5:27 p.m. Friday when the driver apparently tried to avoid a motorbike. It fell into the Qianling Hydropower Station reservoir, according to officials with Nanping city government.About 200 police and rescuers were still looking for the missing people, and the investigation into the accident is underway.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- America's first full face transplant recipient, Dallas Wiens, made his first public appearance at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, according to media reports Tuesday.Sporting a goatee and dark sunglasses, Wiens, the 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man, said Monday his new face feels natural just weeks after a 15-hour procedure that gave him a nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves. Wiens said he was able to smell again and breathe through his nose normally, adding his 4-year-old daughter told him when she saw him after the operation: "Daddy, you're so handsome."  Wiens lost all of his features and eyesight in November 2008 after hitting a power line while painting a church and underwent the transplant in March, 2011. The operation was paid for by the U.S. Department of Defense which gave the hospital a 3.4 million dollar research grant for five transplants.Surgeons said the transplant was not able to restore his sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he will probably have only partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead."The most fun part is to see the next six to nine months when the function will start to come back and when Dallas will start to feel a light touch on his face," plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac said. "To me, that's really exciting."About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in China, the U.S., France and Spain.

LOS ANGELES, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of visitors, many of them children, went to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California for the annual open house Saturday to experience the excitement in explorations.To many visitors, the open house is a rare opportunity to see the federally funded research and development center and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) field center, which is close to the public. JPL is managed by California Institute of Technology.The event, themed "The Excitement in Explorations," provides visitors with the chance to share in the wonders of space through high-definition and 3-D videos, live demonstrations, interactions with scientists and engineers, and a first look at JPL's new Earth Science Center.The Earth Science Center showcases the home planet and JPL's Earth science missions. Since it was the first time open to the public, it attracted many visitors who had to wait for over an hour to get admitted.Visitors first passed by two touchscreens located on opposite walls of the facility that control real-time views of "Eyes on the Earth," an interactive 3-D visualization website. Visitors also had the opportunity to watch a movie in the 3-D theater, which seats up to 40 people.Other Open House highlights include: A chance to see the most unique car in this world before it leaves Earth: The next rover bound for Mars, Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity, in the "clean room" before it is shipped to Florida for a November 2011 launch.JPL further runs its own "reality TV show" via live-streaming webcam: http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl.The life-size rover models in a "Mars" test bed is another attraction and a perennial crowd-pleaser. WASHINGTON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- In the largest study of its kind, researchers from a consortium led by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the University of Miami, and the Boston University School of Medicine, identified four new genes linked to Alzheimer's disease. The findings appeared Sunday in the current issue of Nature Genetics.Each gene individually adds to the risk of having this common form of dementia later in life. These new genes offer a portal into what causes Alzheimer's disease and is a major advance in the field.The study, conducted by the Alzheimer's Disease Genetics Consortium, reports genetic analysis of more than 11,000 people with Alzheimer's disease and a nearly equal number of elderly people who have no symptoms of dementia. Three other consortia contributed confirming data from additional people, bringing the total number of people analyzed to over 54,000. The consortium also contributed to the identification of a fifth gene reported by other groups of investigators from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and other European countries.The study is the result of a large collaborative effort with investigators from 44 universities and research institutions in the United States, led by Gerard Schellenberg at University of Pennsylvania."This is the culmination of years of work on Alzheimer's disease by a large number of scientists, yet it is just the beginning in defining how genes influence memory and intellectual function as we age. We are all tremendously excited by our progress so far, but much remains to be done, both in understanding the genetics and in defining how these genes influence the disease process," Schellenberg said.Until recently, only four genes associated with late-onset Alzheimer's have been confirmed, with the gene for apolipoprotein E-e4, APOE-e4, having the largest effect on risk. The Nature Genetics studies add another four -- MS4A, CD2AP, CD33, and EPHA1 -- and contribute to identifying and confirming two other genes, BIN1 and ABCA7, thereby doubling the number of genes known to contribute Alzheimer's disease.
