SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly a week full of films by military veterans, focusing on a variety of topics is coming to San Diego this month.The GI Film Festival runs Sept. 24-29, bringing together a community of passionate filmmakers, the military veteran community, and those who support them to showcase works in cinema and educate and preserve the legacies of veterans.Festival organizers say their mission is to ensure that the stories of military veterans and their families are told and show future generations the triumphs and sacrifices they endure.The festival also works as a bridge, connection military and civilian populations together through cinema and mutual understanding. All of this works as a way to help veterans heals as well.Last year, the six-day film festival opened with a film starring George Takei, about a veteran who spent time in a Japanese-American internment camp, and also featured films by stars like actor Jeffrey Wright. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. And he wasn’t alone, as others showed up equally as happy to see the park reopen.Sarah Beckman, director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, said, “This is part of people’s daily routines. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than a dozen migrants were apprehended after 150 migrants tried to climb the border fence in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The incident happened New Year’s Eve at an unspecified time. According to the agency, 45 migrants turned back due to CBP’s increased presence at the border before another group of migrants started throwing rocks at agents. Border Patrol agents added that the group tried to lift toddler-sized children over the concertina wire, but agents were unable to help the children because too many rocks were being thrown. Agents used pepper spray upwind and tear gas of the migrants to try and deter them from throwing rocks. CBP says the measures weren’t aimed at the migrants and “successfully suppressed the rock throwers causing them to flee the area.”Most of the migrants returned to Mexico through a hole under the fence and by climbing back over the fence. A total of 25 migrants were apprehended. Under CHP’s use of force policy, the incident is being reviewed. The incident comes on the heels of another recent event at the border in which hundreds of migrants tried to rush the border, forcing the hours-long closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a man they say tried to sexually assault a woman in Little Italy before stealing her car. Police say the man, identified as Christopher Merron, 28, was arrested Monday on several charges, including assault with intent to commit a sex crime, brandishing a deadly weapon and auto theft. According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of India Street at 4:33 a.m. Sunday.RELATED: Man tries to sexually assault woman before stealing her car in Little Italy, police sayPolice say the man walked into Cafe Italia while the victim was cleaning.
