The family of late singer Tom Petty is upset with President Donald Trump for using the hit song "I Won’t Back Down.”The song was played at the president’s re-election rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, over the weekend.That in turn prompted the late star's estate to issue a cease and desist notice to Trump's campaign on Saturday.Adria, Annakim, Dana and Jane Petty wrote in a letter posted to Twitter that Trump was not authorized to use the song to “further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.”The estate said, "both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind."They added that "Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together."The letter also said, “We believe in America and we believe in democracy. The classified ads website Backpage.com has been seized by federal law enforcement agencies, according to a banner that popped up on the site Friday.The banner says, "backpage.com and affiliated websites have been seized as part of an enforcement action" by the FBI, US Postal Inspection Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.Lawmakers on Capitol Hill and advocacy groups have long called for an investigation into Backpage.com for allegedly facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking.A spokesperson for the Justice Department confirmed to CNN that the website has been seized and that additional information would be made available Friday evening. However, a judge decided that the federal case should remain sealed on Friday night. No other additional information was provided.A two-year Senate investigation into online sex trafficking found that found that Backpage.com knowingly aided criminal sex trafficking of women and young girls, simply scrubbing terms from ads such as "Lolita," "teenage," "rape," "amber alert," and publishing them on its site. After the investigation was published in January 2017, Backpage.com shut down its adult ads section.The company has been targeted with several lawsuits over the years, but has been largely protected by Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, a legal protection that gives a broad layer of immunity to online companies from being held liable for user-generated content. Companies are supposed to act in good faith to protect users, but critics argue the law can be used as a shield. The law, however, does not, protect sites from federal liability against criminal law, like child-pornography laws.Last month, however, the Senate approved bipartisan legislation called the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act. The colors of an autumn afternoon can be serene, brilliant and breathtaking.“As the days start getting shorter and the nights get longer, that's the cue that the trees get to change the foliage,” said climate scientist Astrid Caldas.That foliage requires a delicate dance of temperature and moisture to produce fall colors. It’s a dance potentially now in jeopardy due to climate change.“Because these things -- temperature and precipitation, rainfall -- are being affected, changed by climate, then the fall foliage can really get affected,” said Caldas, who is a senior climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit science organization.She said long-term shifting temperature trends and more rain will be disruptive to fall foliage in certain parts of the country.“We are seeing extreme precipitation increase, particularly in the Northeast and the Midwest,” Caldas said.That precipitation was evident in Minnesota, where people found themselves caught off-guard this year by an unusually early snowfall."I had to completely disassemble my fall leaf clean-up box and make sure my plow is still working,” said Greg Futchi, who is a landscape contractor. “We usually get all the leaves down before we see some snow, but not this year."All of that added moisture can lead to a shorter fall foliage season, Caldas said. Yet, repeated and ongoing droughts, like those seen in the western U.S., also bring their own set of problems to autumn leaves.“When it’s very dry, the colors get a little more muted also,” Caldas said. “So, drought can really kind of change completely the setup.”Scientists add that climate change isn’t just going to affect the ways leaves change their colors during the fall. It’s also going to potentially affect where those trees grow in the first place.“When the conditions start changing --like it's starting to get warmer further and further north--well, that's also a possibility that species are going to start migrating farther north,” Caldas said. “So, as different trees start moving to different areas, then the colors may change because the color depends on the tree.”That may mean having to travel farther north to see stunning red maples. It is a change that will be hard to stop unless action is taken on a global scale.“In the long run, if the countries and the whole world is not committed to really reducing emissions and changing to renewables and making that complete change, then it's going to be very hard for us not to see very drastic changes, because small changes are already happening,” Caldas said.Those changes are now encroaching on a time-honored spectacle, courtesy of Mother Nature. 2667

The FDA warned the public on Thursday to not use hand sanitizers packaged in containers that may appear as food or drinks and may put consumers at risk of serious injury or death if ingested.The FDA said that some products are being packaged in items such as water bottles and food pouches, and may contain flavors such as chocolate or raspberry. The FDA said that ingesting alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause significant cardiac injury, including death.The FDA said that one consumer bought a plastic bottle of hand sanitizer thinking it was water.“Drinking only a small amount of hand sanitizer is potentially lethal to a young child, who may be attracted by a pleasant smell or brightly colored bottle of hand sanitizer,” the FDA said.“I am increasingly concerned about hand sanitizer being packaged to appear to be consumable products, such as baby food or beverages. These products could confuse consumers into accidentally ingesting a potentially deadly product. It’s dangerous to add scents with food flavors to hand sanitizers which children could think smells like food, eat and get alcohol poisoning,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “Manufacturers should be vigilant about packaging and marketing their hand sanitizers in food or drink packages in an effort to mitigate any potential inadvertent use by consumers.“The FDA continues to monitor these products and we’ll take appropriate actions as needed to protect the health of Americans.” 1475

The Department of Justice on Monday identified New York City, Portland and Seattle as cities that have allowed "violence and destruction of property to persist," as outlined in a presidential memorandum that could restrict access to federal funding.Earlier in September, President Donald Trump issued the Memorandum on Reviewing Funding to State and Local Government Recipients That Are Permitting Anarchy, Violence, and Destruction in American Cities.The measure allows the DOJ to target city governments that the agency believes has not taken steps to mitigate widespread criminal activity.So-called "anarchist jurisdictions" that meet the DOJ's criteria are subject to a 30-day review by the director of the Office of Management and Budget, who will issue guidance on restricting eligibility for federal grants, according to the presidential memorandum."When state and local leaders impede their own law enforcement officers and agencies from doing their jobs, it endangers innocent citizens who deserve to be protected, including those who are trying to peacefully assemble and protest," Attorney General William Barr said Monday in a statement. "We cannot allow federal tax dollars to be wasted when the safety of the citizenry hangs in the balance. It is my hope that the cities identified by the Department of Justice today will reverse course and become serious about performing the basic function of government and start protecting their own citizens."In New York City, the DOJ cited a monthslong spike in gun violence in conjunction with the City Council's approval of a fiscal budget that reallocated billion from the NYPD toward community and youth programming.
