SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Mountain View community leaders honored the local work of a long-time resident Saturday with an honorary street.Theresa Mae "Mama T" Saunders was a resident and community member in Mountain View, helping with the development of Mountain View Park and its recreation center. In her honor, the city unveiled an honorary street sign above Ocean View Blvd. for Saunders. "Theresa Mae Saunders was a pillar of the Mountain View community," Councilmember Georgette Gómez said. "This honorary street name is one way we can commemorate her life of service to this community and to the City of San Diego."Saunders raised six children while also taking part in local volunteer work, feeding the homeless, and hosting garage sales to benefit those in need.  801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to switch careers or get back to work after coronavirus-caused layoffs have a way to get free job training this summer.San Diego Continuing Education is offering free classes in 75 different areas, many of which are focused on high-demand jobs."During difficult economic times that we are about to enter, short term intensive career education is the way to get America back to work," said SDCE President Dr. Carlos Turner Cortez.Anyone in San Diego is eligible to take the classes. SDCE offers training certificates in healthcare, welding, information technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, clothing, automotives, and more. For Richard Sanchez, who lost his job during the pandemic, it's a chance to start over after a layoff."I'm already 38 years old," Sanchez said. "To have this opportunity helps people out to get a new job and change your career."According to a recent report by SANDAG, around 460,000 people in San Diego have lost their jobs since March 7. The report says unemployment could be as high as 30%.Dr. Cortez said people who are looking for a job should look into continuing education first."It's incumbent on us to make sure that students who are coming through our program are developing the skills necessary to be successful in these career pathways," he said. Classes begin on June 8. The summer session runs through August 22. In many cases, students can get a certificate in as little as 5-10 months. For more information, go to www.sdce.edu. 1514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rising temperatures are increasing the wildfire danger in San Diego County. Monday morning's fires near Webster are the third group of fires sparked by homeless people in a matter of months. Neighbors in the area say they are getting nervous. Edna Wallis has been living in her home for three years. As the weather heats up, she says the brush behind her home becomes a safety hazard. "I start rinsing the patio when the days are extremely hot and dry," says Wallis. "We rinse it, but it's not much."Less than five minutes from her home, a fire sparked off Home Avenue early Monday morning. Among brush and a lot of trash, crews worked to put out the flames that started inside of a homeless encampment. "I'm nervous. I'm very nervous because I'm very close to this area," says Wallis. "All of the neighborhood is dry."There have been other fires in the area as well. A homeless camp caught fire near I-805 and I-15 last week. A blaze also sparked in the same area in March. This fire slightly backed up traffic as crews work to put the flames out that started inside of a tent. San Diego Fire and Rescue encourages everyone to report smoke or fires whenever you see them and do not assume some else will call. 1238

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police arrested a man on suspicion of killing the owner of an East Village flooring business, but a female suspect remains at large, detectives said Thursday.Kevin Eugene Cartwright, 51, was arrested in El Cajon Tuesday. No motive was released.??????10News spoke to Venus, who told us she was Ghedeer "Tony" Radda's cousin. Ten years his junior, she said she always looked up to Radda as a "cool older brother," who taught her everything from pop culture to how to grow up. She said the tragedy was so numbing, she still cannot accept it as reality. "I wake up everyone morning thinking, is this still a dream? Am I ever going to wake up from this nightmare?" Venus asked.Officers believe Kevin Cartwright and an unidentified woman killed Radda at Bottom Price Flooring on G Steet, October 10. Radda suffered trauma to his upper body and died at the scene."I can't imagine him thinking, am I going to go now? Do I call my kids? Do I call my wife? At the end of the day, I just want him to tell us, why?" Venus said. For more than a week, investigators looked for two disguised suspects caught on Radda's newly-installed surveillance cameras. They captured a person in a Granny Mask and a woman with a purple wig.San Diego Police said Wednesday evening they arrested the man they believed was behind the Granny Mask-- Kevin Eugene Cartwright."Today did give us a little bit of peace, not that it will bring him back, but just to know that there is a little bit of closure, that one person has been caught," Venus said. 10News went to Cartwright's last known address in El Cajon. A man answered the door but provided no comment. We then looked into Cartwright's criminal background and found he had been arrested for at least nine felonies -- four in San Diego and five in Virginia -- in the last 33 years. Detectives told family members that Cartwright was once a customer of Radda's, and now he is behind bars, accused of killing him. "I hope that he asks for forgiveness, and I hope he realizes what a tremendous loss we as a family have suffered," Venus sobbed.RELATED: Police searching for masked suspect in East Village homicideCartwright will be arraigned on Friday afternoon. The woman wearing the purple wig has not been arrested. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.RELATED: Crime expert: Mask may be key to solving East Village murderRadda left behind a wife and two young children.
