RTW Retailwinds, the parent company of retail chain New York & Co., announced Monday that is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy — the latest blow to an industry whose struggles were taken to new heights by the coronavirus pandemic.The company said in a press release Monday that filed for bankruptcy relief in New Jersey. In the statement, the company hinted that all of its more than 400 brick-and-mortar stores could close for good.In recent months, sales have fallen at New York & Co. as the pandemic forced shutdowns at non-essential retail stores across the country. However, Tuesday night’s election results show Arizona’s Republican preference is shifting. There’s heavy support this election for both Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and U.S. Senate Candidate Mark Kelly. Both gaining major support in areas like Phoenix and Tucson, two of Arizona’s most populous areas.Several factors may be contributing to the political shift. Over the years, Arizona has become a hot spot for transplants from across the country, especially California, a largely Democratic-leaning state. About 60,000 Californians moved to Arizona in 3017 alone, according to Census Bureau data. Then there’s also Arizona’s growing Hispanic population.“The increasing Latino Latina population in this state that happens to be Democratic leaning and identify as Democrats,” Hoekstra said. And then there’s the young people.“The universities are huge and growing and the students seem to be more active.”That’s a change from the new residents Arizona is often known for attracting. “It was a haven for retirees and snowbirds,” she said. “People who don't really want to pay taxes and moved here for those reasons.”State voter registration statistics show a record number of registered voters in Arizona as of November 2020, with just over 4.2 million. For comparison, the state’s population is closing in on 7.3 million people as of last year. Of the registered voters, 35.24% registered as Republican and 32.20% as Democrat. Getting those voters to turn out, is another battle.“Just the candidates themselves mobilize people one way or another, or demobilize some people maybe, too,” Hoekstra explained. (AP) — A Southern California man has been arrested on suspicion of making more than 10,000 harassing phone calls to government offices, including some that included death threats against those answering the phone, federal prosecutors said.Robert Stahlnecker, 48, was arrested at his home in the Mojave Desert town of Twentynine Palms on Friday and held in federal custody after making an initial court appearance, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.He was charged with threatening federal officers and employees, making interstate communications with the threat to injure a person and anonymous telecommunications harassment.There his no listing for his home phone number and it couldn’t immediately be determined if he has an attorney. His arraignment was scheduled for Dec. 26.According to a 20-page complaint filed in federal court, the calls included three he made within five minutes on Aug. 28 to a congresswoman’s office in San Mateo. Prosecutors said he threatened to come to the office and kill the staffer who answered the phone.On Sept. 28, he allegedly made eight calls in seven minutes to the Washington office of a U.S. senator from Ohio. During the calls prosecutors said he used vulgar language in berating and threatening to kill an intern who answered the phone.Neither member of Congress was identified.In all, prosecutors said, Stahlnecker has made more than 10,000 calls to government agencies and elected officials since January.Prosecutors say U.S. Capitol Police have been investigating harassing and threatening calls allegedly made by Stahlnecker for at least 10 years.
