BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon’s prime minister says he is stepping down from his job in the wake of the Beirut port explosion last week that triggered public fury and mass protests. In a brief televised speech, Prime Minister Hassan Diab said on Monday that he is taking “a step back” so he can stand with the people “and fight the battle for change alongside them.”He said: “I declare today the resignation of this government. May God protect Lebanon,” repeating the last phrase three times.A brief while earlier, Diab’s Cabinet resigned. The resignations risk opening the way to dragged-out negotiations over a new Cabinet amid urgent calls for reform. The developments follow a weekend of anti-government protests in the wake of the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut’s port. The massive blast on Aug. 4 destroyed much of Beirut's port, damaged large parts of the city, killed at least 160 people and injured about 6,000 others. It brought a new wave of public outrage at the government and Lebanon’s long entrenched ruling class. 1020

BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sweetwater Bike Park in Bonita is the first of its kind for San Diego County parks, and it was a long time in the making."As an organization, we have been advocating for over 10 years for this type of park in the county, so we're thrilled," says Susie Murphy, the Executive Director of the San Diego Mountain Biking Association. The park opened in January, and riders of all ages and levels showed up on two wheels."On opening day, I like to say the youngest rider was seventeen months old, and the oldest was seventy-four. It's for all ages, from tiny kids on their Strider bikes, up to teenagers from the neighborhood on their BMX bikes," Murphy says. And Murphy says she loves the design of the park. It comes with jumps, two flow trails, and a skills zone."Every day it puts a smile on my face," Murphy says. Unfortunately, soon after the park opened, it had to be shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We did not know what to expect, it was definitely a disappointment," added Murphy. The park was closed for a couple of months, but is now back open for business, but with a few rule changes."Right now we're only letting fifty people come in at a time," says Park Ranger Adair Flores. "They are required to wear a mask when they come in and they do have to stay six feet apart from each other. They can't group up in the gazebo areas when they are riding, and it's recommended they wear a mask, but you know, it's harder to breathe with it." 1482

Ben & Jerry's is launching a podcast that'll examine the "lesser-known history of racial injustice."On Wednesday, the ice cream company announced that the first 30-minute episode of the 6-part series would premiere Sept. 15.Each episode will delve into a different period in American history and link it to modern-day systemic racism. "'Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism In America' will show the hidden ways legal discrimination and state-sanctioned brutality continued long after slavery ended, profoundly limiting Black Americans' ability to gain access to jobs, housing, education, and health care; or to create and accumulate wealth," the company said in a press release. All the episodes will end with a call-to-action, the company said."Economic and social justice has been a part of Ben & Jerry's mission since our founding 42 years ago," said Jabari Paul, Ben & Jerry's US Activism Manager in the news release. "We now sit at a critical inflection point in our nation's history. If we are to seize the opening that this moment presents, we must be willing to acknowledge the sins of our past so that we move together toward a future of justice and equity."In recent months, the ice cream brand has not shied away from voicing their opposition to racism. The podcast will be hosted by New York Times bestselling author Carvell Wallace.Ben & Jerry's is partnering with Vox Media and The Who We Are Project on the podcast. 1451

Bills are mounting for many Americans and another one being added to the pile for some on unemployment is a bill to pay back the money they were given.“This is a massive financial hardship,” said Michele Evermore with the National Employment Law Project (NELP).Evermore explained the notice to pay back unemployment is most often due to an error somewhere in the application process or when an applicant filed for continued benefits each week."Either the agency made a mistake, or someone clicked the wrong button on a form somewhere and now are being informed that they have been overpaid for months and now have to payback tens of thousands of dollars,” she added. In some cases, when an error was found on one week, the agency disqualified people for the entire time they were unemployed.“That is a lot of money and it is money that people spent on housing and food and they have no way to get it back,” said Evermore. It is unclear on a national level just how many people are getting notices of overpayment. That’s, in part, because states are just starting to look into this and report. However, so far, states like Texas reported it is seeking refunds from 260,000 people, Ohio announced it overpaid at least 160,000 people, and in Virginia, the number of people overpaid is at least 35,000.“We are going to hear a lot more of this happening in a lot more states, and we are going to hear a lot more horror stories if this legislation isn’t passed,” explained Evermore. In its stimulus package, the House of Representatives has included legislation that would waive the unemployment overpayments as long as they aren’t considered fraudulent activity. However, the package is unpopular with the Senate. NELP believes the forgiveness is critical to those on unemployment and our economy.“It was estimated during the last recession that every dollar spent on unemployment insurance generated .61 in local economic activity,” said Evermore. "So, imagine that in reverse, imagine that money getting sucked out of communities as we are still in very rough economic times.”Without federal waivers, that could be a reality. NELP added that people in a situation where they have received a notice of overpayment have two options to consider, if they cannot afford to repay the benefit. In some states, you can file for a waiver, especially if the mistake was made on the part of the states’ unemployment system. If you do not qualify for a waiver, you can seek an appeal and review of your particular case. 2511
