SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. City of San Diego and U.S. Navy officials signed an agreement last week to revamp the Navy complex near Old Town with the central terminal as a possibility for the project. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Symphony Orchestra announced Thursday they are breaking ground in September for the Bayside Performance Park, a new permanent venue for the Orchestra at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.The Symphony Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday on the 9-month plan that will be complete in time for summer concerts in 2020.Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer said they are taking advantage of an underutilized part of the Embarcadero, "we've looked and there is no performance venue on the water like this, certainly not in the state of California, but probably the U.S."READ RELATED: San Diego Symphony's new bayside venue clears last hurdle before buildThe Symphony has been stalking the venue for years, "people had the idea to have a permanent venue out here for 17 years, but we have been hard at work for four," she said.The final project can seat up to 10,000, "feature a permanent, highly innovative, architecturally striking and acoustically superior outdoor stage that will allow the Symphony to present a wider variety of musical presentations and enrich the patron experience with improved sight-lines, expanded concession area and permanent bathrooms," the press release states."I understand that some people on Coronado are concerned about the potential for noise but it's good noise," neighbor Sam Ciccati said, excited about the new venue. The design shifted due to that concern, pointing the shell-shaped stage away from the island. The venue will host more than the symphony and there's the possibility Comic-Con could get involved."We would have concerts here of course, but it remains a park much of the year, and we'll be able to have yoga classes with a string quartet and we'll be able to have children activities, really activate this site an bring more people to the bay," Gilmer said, suggesting it could be an education destination teaching students about the port and being water-wise."The only thing that will limit us here is our own imaginations," she said.The project is projected to cost million, funded completely by private donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted 6-3 Monday on an option for regulating marijuana use in San Diego, now that it is legal.Council members chose between two options. The first would have allowed testing of marijuana and marijuana products in labs in industrial and commercial zones that prohibit residential use.The second option, which passed, will allow testing plus cultivation, distribution and production of marijuana with a permit.  The activities will be allowed in light and heavy industrial zones.San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman urged the council to enforce option one with the strictest of controls.  The Chief cited the 11 current dispensaries as a public safety concern."We've fielded 273 radio calls from those establishments so far this year, everything from violent robberies to a shooting and those calls will increase," Zimmerman said. 911

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. Construction is set to begin June 2020 and finish by June 2022. 1116
