It's been a brutal week for many big American retailers.JCPenney announced Friday that it will cut 360 jobs at its stores and corporate headquarters. That's on top of the more than 5,000 layoffs in 2017 after JCPenney decided to close nearly 140 stores.The struggling retailer also said that its earnings and sales for this year will be worse than what Wall Street analysts were expecting. Shares of JCPenney plunged nearly 10% in early trading.JCPenney wasn't the only prominent bricks and mortar chain to report poor results this week.Barnes & Noble posted a quarterly loss and a drop in sales Thursday morning, sending the bookstore's shares to an all-time low.Victoria apparently needs a new Secret too. L Brands, the owner of the lingerie seller and Bath & Body Works, plunged 14% Thursday after its outlook turned out to be more devilish than angelic.Nordstrom, which is trying to go private, failed to impress investors with its latest results after the closing bell Thursday. Its stock fell 6% Friday morning.And the other shoe dropped at Foot Locker. The sneaker and athletic apparel company's sales missed forecasts and its outlook was weak as well. They are just doing so on their phones as opposed to at the mall.That's been great for e-commerce leader Amazon, which has continued to post impressive sales growth. Its stock is also up more than 25% this year and is near a record high.Coye Nokes, partner in the consumer and retail practice at strategy consulting firm OC&C, said that the threat from Amazon is clearly the biggest challenge for most traditional retailers."Amazon is still coming and it is entering even more categories," she said.But she added that there are some retailers that have been fighting back and have done a good job of boosting their own digital operations.Related: Macy's is back! The electronics retailer's stock even rose 4% while the broader market tanked on fears of a global trade war.And there are other traditional retailers that are holding up well.Gap shares bucked the market's downward trend Friday, rising 5% after it posted solid results. The Gap's Old Navy brand is on fire. Its same-store sales were up 9% during the holiday quarter.Department store chain Dillard's topped forecasts earlier this week too, sending its shares up nearly 17% on the news.So it's not all doom and gloom for retail. INDIANAPOLIS -- Members of a neighborhood on Indianapolis' northwest side are asking police to do something about a woman caught on camera attacking neighbors with a yard sign and threatening their lives.The woman was seen on video pulling signs out of Miguel Rios and Luvia Roman's yard and saying she'll kill them, all over a property line dispute on Twin Creeks Drive, just north of Northwestway Park.Neighbors say the woman has a history of harassing minority neighbors. Corey Banks, a neighbor from across the street, said he's been called the N-word multiple times by her. Rios and Roman bought the house next door to the woman about a year and a half ago. They say the woman has called the health department, narcotics and child protective services in an effort to get them to move."I'm scared for my life," Rios said. "I'm scared for my family's life. And it's just not right." 918

In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in one challenge earlier this fall and the DC Circuit will hear arguments in early December.On Friday, Solicitor General Noel Francisco filed petitions asking the justices to take up the issue in three separate cases that are still in lower courts so it could be decided definitively this term. Francisco argues that lower court rulings imposing nationwide injunctions are wrong and warrant immediate review.He writes because of the injunctions, "the military has been forced to maintain that prior policy for nearly a year" despite a determination by Mattis and a panel of experts that the "prior policy, adopted by (Defense Secretary Ash Carter), posed too great a risk to military effectiveness and lethality."House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi vowed to "fight this discriminatory action" in a statement Saturday."The President's ban is a cruel and arbitrary decision designed to humiliate transgender Americans who have stepped forward to serve our country," she added. "This bigoted ban weakens our military readiness and our country, and shows this president's stunning lack of loyalty to those who risk all to defend our freedoms."Earlier in the month, the Department of Justice warned the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that it planned to ask for emergency relief to lift the nationwide injunction.The filing comes after Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump got into a public dispute about the independence of the judiciary this week. Roberts issued a rare statement on Wednesday criticizing the President for calling one lower court judge who ruled against him an "Obama judge." The President responded via Twitter criticizing Roberts and accusing the American judiciary of undermining national security.Under normal circumstances, the Supreme Court does not like to take up an issue before it has made its way through the lower courts. The justices like to have issues percolate below so that they can benefit from the opinions of lower court judges.Francisco has moved aggressively at times to get cases before a Supreme Court that is more solidly conservative with the addition of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.Francisco asked the justices to step in to review the lower court's decision in a case related to the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. We’re monitoring live brain waves."She says, in a recording of the brain’s waves, she can see certain brainwave activity associated with challenges like depression or anxiety.“If someone has too much or too little of something, that causes them to have symptoms," Myles said.She says with neurofeedback, they then “train” the brain to perform better.A patient sits in a chair with electrodes attached to their head as they watch a screen with headphones on. Their brain is rewarded when their brainwaves are in a certain range with a screen that brightens and audio that plays louder in their headphones.“The brain is training to do what we’re asking it to do," Myles said.Think of it as conditioning, just like any other part of the body.“Your brain is a muscle, just as if you were to have a sprained ankle or a broken leg. You can’t expect someone to run a race with it," Tripp said.Shelli sees the methods they use at The Mind Gym as a way to treat mental health beyond traditional paths such as medication, and a way to reach breakthroughs that can feel hard to find.“It’s kind of like an onion. It will unfold stuff," Myles said. "So the importance of having a counselor while you’re doing neurofeedback is important.”Though it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health says Neurofeedback is an alternative method that has shown improvement in treating many mental health disorders. But its report suggests the benefits aren’t long-lasting.“I’m able to sleep for the first time in my life," Tripp said.Tripp says her sessions twice a week for six months have undeniably worked for her.“Colors are brighter, food tastes different, it’s beyond words really," Tripp said. “To know I could have transformed my life so long ago, nobody should be struggling right now that this is out there.” 2506
