SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A buyer for a large grocery store chain who lives in San Diego will be among the contestants on tonight's episode of ``Supermarket Sweep,'' which will air at 8 p.m. on ABC.Elizabeth ``EZ'' Tan and teammate Angelique Munoz will compete on the Halloween episode of the game show hosted by former ``Saturday Night Live'' cast member Leslie Jones. Munoz is a Bellingham, Washington resident who is also a buyer for the chain.``A friend at work applied for my friend Angelique and I because she thought our crazy humor, competitiveness and passion for all things grocery- related would make for good TV. She was not wrong,'' Tan said.Tan and Munoz ``did a number of Zoom calls with casting directors and producers selling our awesome selves and playing grocery-themed games to show them that we got what it takes,'' Tan said.``There were hundreds of other teams trying to get on the show and luckily they chose us,'' Tan said.On the show, two-player teams race around what ABC described as a ``whimsical grocery store'' built for the series at The Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Air Center, hoping to get the highest cart total value so they can play for 0,000.``Supermarket Sweep'' begins with the ``Mini Sweep'' in which, upon solving a riddle, a player selected from each team runs through the supermarket to find a correlating product. The first person to grab the specially marked item wins some extra time and cash for the ``Big Sweep.''Three minigames follow, testing contestants' knowledge of a variety of grocery items.The next round is the ``Big Sweep'' where one player from each team races through the aisles trying to grab as many high-priced items as he or she can, seeking the biggest total to be able to advance to the ``Super Sweep.''Contestants can take a maximum of three of any item in the store except for items over 0, where there is a limit of one.In the ``Super Sweep'' a team races against the clock to find five designated products that will earn them 0,000.Each ``Supermarket Sweep'' episode honors a grocery store employee who has been on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Sunday's ``Employee of the Week'' is Betty Henry, who works at a supermarket in Miami Beach, Florida.Ninety-five pallets of perishable and non-perishable food used on ``Supermarket Sweep'' were donated to Los Angeles-area charities including the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the Los Angeles Mission and Downtown Women's Shelter.The majority of the show's meats went to the Rancho Wildlife Foundation which operates a wildlife sanctuary in Silverado, an unincorporated area located in the Santa Ana Mountains in eastern Orange County.A large assortment of the show's pet food and pet supplies were donated to the Toluca Lake-based pet adoption service, The Rescue Train. SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - The San Diego City Council Tuesday approved a code amendment that prohibits housing discrimination against applicants using Section 8 vouchers or other rent substitutes. The proposed code amendment blocks landlords from rejecting applicants based solely on voucher status, though they would still retain a right, based on other rental criteria, to choose residents who don't use subsidies.Studies have found that prohibiting income-based discrimination leads to increased neighborhood options for residents and decreased segregation.“Hearing from the community was very powerful and I am happy that the Council approved the ordinance to end housing discrimination taking place in San Diego,” said Councilmember Georgette Gómez. “This is one step towards helping increase access to affordable housing for all San Diegans.”Local California governments with such provisions include Berkeley, Corte Madera, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Marin County, San Francisco, Santa Clara County, Santa Monica and Woodland.San Diego's proposed ordinance also establishes a landlord contingency fund for property damage or lost rent related to renters with vouchers.Implementation of the proposal is expected to take two years. Year one focuses on voluntary compliance as well as landlord outreach and education of the potential benefits of renting to Section 8 users, including consistent on-time rent payments, long-term tenancies, flexible leases and background checks.Year two introduces investigation and enforcement services.More than 15,000 low-income households receive Section 8 assistance through the San Diego Housing Commission. That breaks down to 36,478 individuals, 86 percent being people of color.In June, the San Diego City Council's Smart Growth and Land Use Committee advanced the ordinance to the council with no recommendation through a split 2-2 vote. SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? Why is it telling kids they have sexual rights apart from their parents?” Bever said.The group is scheduled to hold a rally at the district’s office in University Heights at 4 p.m., just before the School Board’s meeting. 1075
