SEATTLE, Wash. – Models show a “second wave” of coronavirus deaths beginning in the United States in September, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation said Thursday. The IHME has extended its COVID-19 forecasts through Oct. 1 and the institute says they show 169,890 deaths in the US by October 1, with a possible range between 133,201 and 290,222.IHME says deaths nationwide are predicted to remain fairly level through August and begin to rise again at the end of the month, with a more pronounced increase during September. However, the institute says some states will see the increase earlier due to increased mobility and relaxation of social distancing mandates.“We’re now able to look ahead and see where states need to begin planning for a second wave of COVID-19,” said IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray. “We hope to see our model proven wrong by the swift actions governments and individuals take to reduce transmission.”Based on IHME’s models, these states are estimated to have the highest numbers of deaths by Oct. 1:· New York: 32,310 (range between 31,754 and 33,241)· New Jersey: 13,177 (12,881–13,654)· California: 8,821(7,151–12,254)· Michigan: 8,771 (7,098–14,743)IHME says the states with the earliest uptick in deaths, according to current modeling, are Florida, Arizona, Georgia, and Colorado.“If the US is unable to check the growth in September, we could be facing worsening trends in October, November, and the following months if the pandemic, as we expect, follows pneumonia seasonality,” Dr. Murray said.According to IHME, increasing travel in some states and the overlap with the flu season are likely to impact hospital demand for services in fall and winter. The IHME is an independent population health research center at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The institute’s models have been cited by many hospitals and government bodies, including the White House. The institute will continue to forecast four months into the future, updating the timeframe for the forecast at the beginning of each month. On Wednesday, the U.S. reached a grim milestone in the pandemic. COVID-19 cases in country surpassed 2 million, with more than 113,000 deaths from the illness, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.Although many states are continuing to relax COVID-19 restrictions, it’s still important to take simple measures to prevent the spread of the virus, like washing your hands, keeping your distance from others, and wearing a mask when out in public.“Based on IHME’s analysis, mask use results in up to 50% reduction in transmission of COVID-19,” the institute said Thursday.Click here to learn more from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about preventing the spread of COVID-19. 2765

Scott Thompson never thought making other people smile would be so much fun.“I never thought it would be awesome for myself too. You know, I didn’t know that I would be as happy it as I am," Thompson said. But it’s never too late for an old farmer to learn a new trick.“We started out with a small field, about three or four acres,” he said. Scott and his wife own Thompson Strawberry Farm in Wisconsin, normally a pick-it-yourself berry farm. But because of COVID-19, they decided to plant a field of sunflowers so people could come get out of the house, enjoy the sunflower fields and smile.“People are going to need a release. People are going to need a place to go and we’re just fortunate that we have that opportunity to give it to somebody,” said Thompson. But one field turned into another.“Then we put in three or four more fields,” said Thompson.Turned into 2.2 million sunflowers.“It just kind of added up and kept going and kept going so I just kept planting,” said Thompson. The sunflowers are helping people get out of the house during the pandemic“We just wanted some sunshine in corona, it’s an easy activity to do that’s not in doors,” said Kate Kronstein, who was visiting the field with her mom. “Road trip. Can’t do anything else these days!” said John Poquette, up from Chicago.People have been coming from mostly Illinois, but all over the Midwest to come snip some sunflowers and take a bright bouquet from the farm. It’s per car to get in, and that comes with a dozen pick-em-yourself sunflowers. But Scott says you can do more than just pick sunflowers while you’re here.“Everybody just seems like they have their little niche of what they want to do. I bet we’ve had five or six different proposals, we’ve had wedding photographers, we’ve had senior pictures, family pictures, so we’re really just trying to spread that fun for everyone,” said Thompson. And when you leave, they want you to take two things with you: some sunflowers and a smile.“It made me happy, and it just gave me a reminder that there’s still sunshine out there, even with everything going on,” said Kronstein smiling as she got ready to leave. 2149

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — Four Congressmen, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas, and Mike Levin, participated in an all-access tour of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Friday afternoon. Upon finishing the tour, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said sternly, “There is no crisis at the border. There is no justification for an emergency declaration at the border.” This was a direct contradiction to President Trump's reasoning to build a southern border wall. It has been almost one month since the Department of Homeland Security began implementing the new Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). The policy forces migrants from Central and South America entering the United States without papers, or those claiming asylum, to in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. According to the Mexican Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, Tijuana has the fifth highest murder rate in the world. Because of that, Representative Juan Vargas (CA-51-D) strongly rejected MPP.“To be sent back to a place like Tijuana, where they don’t have family, friends, where they don’t have the social connections to be helped and to be safe, I don’t think we should be doing it. I think it is the wrong thing to do. I don’t think it’s our American values," said Vargas.Previous to the new MPP, migrants were released into the United States after their initial process, under the assumption they would return to US Immigration Court at a later time to receive their final status. But Homeland Security said that too many migrants would skip court, and disappear into the US as fugitives. This afternoon, Majority Leader Hoyer used the President’s coined slogan to refute the claim. “That’s fake news. 97% of people show up. That’s a better percentage than the people who show up who are on parole in the United States of America for crimes,” Representative Hoyer said. After touring the facility, the Democrats agreed, solving the immigration issue is not as simple as building a physical wall. Overcrowding the ports with seemingly endless asylum seekers is not the answer either. They were all impressed by the work being done at San Ysidro and hoped all other ports implement the high tech protocols conducted there.“This national emergency declaration serves no purpose other than a political one,” Representative Mike Levin (CA-49-D) said. “If we truly want to solve the problem to the extent to one exists, we need to invest in the technology of the future, just as we have done here at San Ysidro, at all 330 ports of entry.” 2601
