SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two University of San Diego graduates may eventually find themselves among the stars.USD Alumni Matthew Dominick and Jonny Kim will graduate as part of NASA's first class of astronaut candidates under the Artemis program Friday at the program's Johnson Space Center in Houston.Dominick, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from USD's school of engineering, is a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander born in Colorado. The FDA-approved sensor is easy to put on and can be worn for 10 days. "I feel like I have more control and diabetes has less control over me, which is the most freeing feeling in the world," said Keary, Zola's mom. Keary says Dexcom, a San Diego-based company, is not only simplifying their lives but also saving them, especially when their blood sugar levels get low. Keary can monitor both her and Zola's blood glucose levels on her smartphone, even if they're thousands of miles apart. While this is typical for a San Diego summer, there is one major difference in 2020.“We’re very conscious about crowds,” said Encinitas local Jennifer Marakovits.She and her husband Joe visited Del Mar Saturday afternoon. The two brought their own masks and sat watching the crowds from a distance.“It’s a matter of life or death and wearing a mask to me, it’s worth it,” said Joe.RELATED: Del Mar hiring more officials to enforce mask policies, ,000 fine possibleNearby, a Sheriff's deputy walked around. This is a new addition to the area. Del Mar’s city council voted to spend ,000 through the next four months to bring in extra deputies to help with mask and social distancing enforcement. Prior to this decision, one single deputy worked at a time, and with thousands of people visiting every day, the decision was made to help enforce county orders. The deputies will work a few four-hour shifts a week, changing the time, place, and location depending on the day.The deputy out Saturday afternoon held a stack of informational pamphlets and a box of face masks, which he handed out to anyone not wearing a mask who passed him. The goal is to keep the extra deputy taking educational actions similar to this, however, they could issue a citation that could cost up to ,000 for a violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When the Chargers bolted north to the Los Angeles area, not only did they vacate what’s now known as SDCCU stadium, they also emptied out of their facility off Murphy Canyon Road.Formerly known as Chargers Park, the facility belongs to the City of San Diego. Team 10 discovered even though the site is vacant, the utility and maintenance bills continue to pile up.According to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The most recent water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.A city spokesperson said any vacant building still has operating and utility costs.“This is not a way to maximize taxpayer dollars,” said San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who saw the bills Team 10 received through a public information request.In 2017, Alvarez and Councilmember Lorie Zapf backed a plan that would have transformed the facility into a temporary homeless shelter. It didn’t happen.“We have a poor record and a history of not being able to use our real estate assets in a good way,” Alvarez said.Team 10 started looking into the operating costs after seeing a video posted to YouTube of people touring the facility.The guys from “The Somethin’ or Other Tour” took a peek around the building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wherever a Topgolf is built in San Diego, it's bound to tee-up some criticism.But as it stands, a potential East Harbor Island location facing golfers toward the downtown skyline may not end up being an option.The Board of Port Commissioners decided to delay a decision earlier this month on entering an exclusive negotiation agreement with Topgolf.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenadeThe Port directed staff to begin mapping out an agreement with Topgolf late last year. East Harbor Island was floated as a potential location at the time. But an agreed upon location must be chosen first before the negotiation starts.During the Feb. 11 meeting, commissioners were presented a study on developing the Harbor Island site and how Topgolf could work into that plan. Three diagrams showed the site's possibilities, with or without Topgolf:A "phase one" diagram included a potential Topgolf plus a 400-space parking lot and 500-room hotel and parking structure on the east side of the island. The "phase two" rendering kept Topgolf and the east-end hotel, but added a hotel development to the facility's west side that could have a shared parking structure with Topgolf.The final diagram depicted three hotel developments on the East Harbor Island land, without Topgolf. All the diagrams were meant to be illustrative of potential ideas of the site, not an official plan. It's a lot of land.""It seems to me we have one decision or one issue we need to discuss, which is do we want to have Topgolf in this location," said chair Anne Moore.
