ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. Women should be encouraged, she said, to gain the spirit of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance.Chen also urged countries around the world to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in policy-making regarding gender equality.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares advanced to a five-month high Friday on the gains of gold producers and nonferrous metals.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 3.13 percent, or 83.09points, to close at 2,738.74.The Shenzhen Component Index gained 3.86 percent, or 442.83 points, to end at 11,911.37.Combined turnover stood at 283.42 billion yuan (42.43 billion U.S. dollars), up from 183 billion yuan the previous trading day.Gainers outnumbered losers by 814 to 41 in Shanghai and 1,025 to 47 in Shenzhen.Most Chinese stocks proved resilient Friday after the stock markets were closed from Oct. 1 to 7 for the annual National Day holiday.Gold producers rallied Friday after international gold prices hit a record during the Chinese holiday as investors sought an alternative investment to the U.S. dollar, which slid to an eight-month low against the euro on Thursday.Zijin Mining Group, China's largest gold producer, surged by the 10- percent daily trading limit to end at 8 yuan per share. BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced Monday that it would provide an additional 200 million yuan (29.4 million U.S. dollars) of humanitarian aid to flood-hit Pakistan for disaster relief and reconstruction.The Chinese government had previously given 120 million yuan in humanitarian relief to its neighbor, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu confirmed the 200-million-yuan aid on Monday evening."Chinese government has decided to provide 200 million yuan of humanitarian aid to support Pakistan," she said in a statement.As Pakistan's "close neighbor and all-weather friend," China would continue to support Pakistan's disaster relief and reconstruction efforts, said Jiang.Pakistan is still facing severe challenges in relief and reconstruction, and needs additional aid from the international community, she said.
