SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service unveiled its newest forever stamp Wednesday, honoring pioneering astronaut and UC San Diego professor Sally Ride.The ceremony, held at the UCSD campus, featured several of Ride's family and friends, including her life and business parter, Tam O'Shaughnessy, astronaut and Director of the Johnson Space Center Ellen Ochoa, and tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King.RELATED: First American woman in space to be honored with the Sally Ride Forever Stamp"It's amazing the impact and the long-lasting impact that Sally Ride's going to have," King told 10News. "And the stamp, this forever stamp, will be a big help."O'Shaughnessy revealed to 10News that Ride was a stamp collector, herself. "She just kept doing it her whole life, so she would just be so honored with this."Ride was the first American woman in space. Upon leaving NASA, she became a professor. Ride simultaneously founded a business called "Sally Ride Science", which is housed at UCSD. It is dedicated to inspiring young people in STEM.Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 at age 61. 1124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The preliminary hearing got underway Wednesday for a case that saw the California Highway Patrol reverse course on blame months after a deadly wrong-way crash.Lauren Freeman appeared in court almost a year to the day of the deadly wrong crash on the transition ramp between I-5 and I-8 near Old Town about 2 a.m. Justin Callahan, 35 , who was driving a Volkswagen Jetta, died at the scene, while Freeman and her passenger in a Toyota Camry suffered serious injuries in the crash.The CHP initially thought Callahan was driving the wrong way, eastbound in the westbound lanes, but family members told 10News it didn't make sense because he should have been heading to Ocean Beach from the South Bay after work, and not away from it. After a more thorough probe, investigators determined it was Freeman who was driving the wrong way and driving under the influence. Officers arrested her in November on charges including murder and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated."We're just hoping for justice. The truth came out through the CHP and now we have the justice system to go through," said Tommy Villafranca, Callahan's brother.On the stand, one witness says he was driving on I-8 headed toward Sunset Cliffs, when he and his passenger saw a light-colored 4-door car race past him going the wrong way."I was in the car ... noticed headlights coming in my direction. You see it and by the time it registers, it drove past me ... it was crazy," said Valentino Asuncion IV.10News reached out to a contingent of Freeman's supporters, who declined to comment. The hearing will stretch into Thursday, when the judge will decide if it heads to trial. 1674

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year's San Diego Pride festivities are going virtual, to comply with the Stay-at-home order brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the program online, others could not resist heading to Hillcrest for the annual celebration. No cars needed to be towed, and no streets needed to be blocked off Saturday. This year's San Diego Pride parade launched virtually in a quiet outdoor patio at Inside-Out restaurant in Hillcrest."Today's going to look a little different, but we're going to keep it as close to normal as possible," San Diego Pride Executive Director, Fernando Lopez, said.Organizers hoped to keep it "normal," despite trying times brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. But Pride is no stranger to the idea of "adapt and overcome.""Our parade has gone through a hurricane, our parade has gone through a bomb threat," San Diego Pride Philanthropy Director, Sarafina Scapicchio said. "We have had challenges to this event happening, and it is very important to keep our Pride traditions alive regardless of what's going on to the community."People who would normally be marching in Hillcrest submitted videos and logged on for live interviews. Others still made their way to University Avenue, to support local LGBTQ businesses and display their pride."Pride is feeling your true self and celebrating with your community," Lorraine Neville said while dining outdoors at Gossip Grill."It means one love," Cindy Lauritzen said, also at the restaurant.Cindy and Janine Lauritzen never miss a Pride. They say they want their love story to inspire the next generation."There was a day when we couldn't be married," Janine Lauritzen said. "Now we are and celebrating that, and getting the younger generations to see that it's OK to be who they are."They were one of the more than 160,000 people who tuned into the virtual parade from around the world.Organizers admit it was not perfect. Periodically, they faced a few digital and audio hiccups. But they say they are proud to spread this year's timely slogan."'Together We Rise,' is our message to everyone," Scapicchio said.
