Ben Watkins died at the age of 14 from a rare form of cancer, after capturing the country’s attention in 2018 competing on MasterChef Junior.Watkins reportedly died in a Chicago area children’s hospital Monday, according to the family’s attorney. Watkins had a rare illness called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma. Only six people in the world have been diagnosed with it, according to the family.“Our Ben went home to be with his mother this afternoon after a year-and-a-half-long battle with Cancer. After losing both of his parents in September 2017, we have marveled at Ben’s strength, courage and love for life. He never, ever complained. Ben was and will always be the strongest person we know,” reads a statement from the family on a GoFundMe page for Watkins.Shortly before Watkins’ appearance on MasterChef, when he was just 11 years old, his parents both died in a murder-suicide in 2017. He was cared for by an uncle and family members, according to reports.Just after his 13th birthday, Watkins was diagnosed with the rare cancer, with a soft tissue tumor. Chef Gordon Ramsay posted his tribute to the young chef on social media. Ramsay hosted the cooking competition show, and worked with Watkins in season 6.“Ben you were an incredibly talented home cook and even stronger young man. Your young life had so many tough turns but you always persevered. Sending all the love to Ben Watkins’ family with this terrible loss,” his tweet reads. 1459

BROWARD COUNTY, Florida — The brother of the accused Parkland shooter told deputies he went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School three times since his brother allegedly committed a deadly shooting there in February, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.“I just went there to take it all in,” Zachary Cruz can be heard saying to deputies on recently released Broward Sheriff’s Office body worn camera footage. Cruz was arrested for trespassing on school grounds on March 19 despite being warned to keep away from the school, according to a BSO report.Over the radio, a deputy relayed that the brother of the deadly school shooting suspect was spotted riding through the Parkland school campus on his skateboard. The Broward Sheriff's Office released body-worn camera footage and radio transmission from their investigation into Cruz for trespassing.  In the video, Cruz is seen talking to deputies on the side of 10100 Holmberg Road in Parkland. Deputies say multiple people told law enforcement they saw Cruz riding on his skateboard at Stoneman Douglas High.“You can't go on the school property," a deputy told Cruz in the video. Deputies search his backpack, which he said was filled with clothes.Cruz said he was “taking a break” from school and left when he was in the eleventh grade. He told deputies a friend dropped him off there.Deputies have Cruz sit on the ground, with his skateboard nearby, place him in handcuffs and then put him in the back of a patrol car. He was later booked into the Broward County Jail.A Broward judge set Cruz’s bond for 0,000 for trespassing. Trespassing is a misdemeanor that usually carries only a bond. If released, he’s ordered to wear an ankle monitor, stay away from any school, and the suburban Lantana home where he’s living will be searched for guns and ammunition. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is asking a judge for a “risk protection order” to ban Cruz from purchasing or possessing any guns or ammunition for a year. The order has temporarily been granted and a judge is expected to make a final decision in April. 2109

BONITA (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Bonita say their street is becoming congested with "toll dodgers" - drivers who are going out of their way to avoid paying the .55 toll on State Route 125.   It's not just the traffic buildup that neighbors find concerning, it's that these drivers are often speeding - right past an elementary school, parks and horse tracks. In a community meeting Tuesday, the City shared plans to fix the issues on Briarwood and San Miguel Ranch roads. RELATED: Drivers dodging tolls on SR 125 cause problems in South Bay neighborhood"There's a lot of concern about people trying to evade the tolls," said Greg  Cox, with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As a result, Cox said the City lowered the speed limit on San Miguel Road to 25 mph and placed a stop sign at a popular horse crossing. They also plan to intall a traffic signal at Sunnyside Elementary School. "If the County can secure a grant for the funding, that could be done within the next year," Cox said. John Scott has been in the neighborhood since the mid 1980s. He's noticed the buildup up of traffic over time, and says...he can't fault the drivers for trying to save a buck. "They got as much right to use the road as anybody else has to use the road," he said.  1327

BROADVIEW, Ill. – As the debate continues over whether it will be safe to return to school in the fall, some students are trying to stay engaged during the summer. For students with special needs, it can be especially challenging. Learning new life skills is about overcoming those challenges. From inside her home, special education teacher Rebecca Josefek begins her classes with meditation each morning.“We try to find one that would energize us and get us started for the day. But it's important for them to center to focus,” said Josefek. For the last six summers, the special education teacher at Proviso East High School has worked on an extended year program for high school students with special needs.“We prepare these kids for a productive life after high school,” said Josefek.Normally, the summer class is hands on, focused on life-skill building like cooking and gardening.Josefek says in-person instruction is critical to these students' development. But this year, like so many things, it’s almost completely online. For the nearly 7 million students with special needs, it can be especially harrowing.“It's scary and it's hard with the kids, because we've lost some kids, like they don't want to be on or they're on and they just don't want to be present, like they're just in the background,” said Josefek.Kamron Bell, a 15-year-old sophomore at Proviso West High School, has Down syndrome. Though this year the summer program has required adjustment, he’s taken the virtual learning in stride.“I like it,” he said with a smile. For Kamron’s mother, Alison Bell, not having the in-person instruction means she has to take on a more active role.“Kam had an aide who had a one-on-one aid when he was in school, so I took the place of the aid. I think it just kind of sitting next to him and making sure that he stayed on task and that they could understand him,” said the mother. No one knows what the long-term impact of distance learning will be on these students. Josefek says it’s been a tough journey already.“It's a challenge and I think they're missing a lot. So, they like their social interaction with each other and with us as teachers,” she said.Educators say there will likely be significant regression – a phenomenon known as the “summer slide.” And the longer students are away from traditional classrooms – the more pronounced that regression could become. It’s one reason Josefek hopes remote learning will be long gone by next summer.“I hope but we will continue this summer program whether we're online or we are in person because it's definitely a needed program for these students.” 2620
