"This new technology might encourage patients to check their blood sugars more often, which could lead to better control of their diabetes by a simple touch to the eye." said Jeffrey T. HARARE, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The two-day visit to Zimbabwe by Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi starting Thursday is an endorsement of relations between the Southern African country and China, local figures told Xinhua.Former Zimbabwean ambassador to China Chris Mutsvangwa said in an interview on Tuesday that Yang's visit will also boost economic relations between the two countries."The visit of a foreign minister is a big banner announcement to say that relations between Zimbabwe and China are reaching for a new level," he said."This is a visit which will mark a new diplomatic high watermark in Zimbabwe's international relations because to get the visit of an important and emerging super-power like China with such economic clout is a big vote of confidence on the part of Zimbabweans who have been pummeled by sanctions" imposed by the West.Yang, who will make the visit at the invitation of Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, is scheduled to meet President Robert Mugabe and other senior government officials.Mutsvangwa said the Chinese veto at the United Nations in 2008 was "a landmark diplomatic decision where it basically saved Zimbabwe from punitive sanctions instigated by an irate and sulky former colonial power.""So, now this visit will give an opportunity for Zimbabweans tofinally thank China for this act. BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- In the next five years, China will further expand the coverage of its basic medical insurance system and ease the cost of medical services, Health Minister Chen Zhu said Friday.Chen made the remarks while addressing a meeting for the reform of the health care system.The medical expenditure that shouldered by individuals had been cut to 38.2 percent of China's annual overall spending on medical services in 2009, down from 60 percent in 2001, thanks to increasing government funding support for the measure, said Chen.He said the country is striving to bring down the ratio to below 30 percent by the end of the country's 12th five-year plan period (2011-2015).China is steadily pushing towards the implementation of a basic medicine system which aims to ensure affordable access to essential drugs for patients, Chen said.In the areas already covered by basic medicine system, the average price of basic medicine has dropped by around 30 percent, Chen added.He said that the reform of government-run hospitals, which is key to ensure that the masses gain universal access to basic health care services, must be undertaken.In 2011, more measures will be made to restructure the distribution of public hospitals, reform government-run traditional Chinese medical institutions and support building and developing hospitals in county-level regions, Chen said.

SHANGHAI, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Lenovo Group and a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group (SMG) signed an agreement on Thursday to create a firm that would provide mobile-Internet video services.BesTV New Media Co., a subsidiary of SMG, owns 51 percent of the venture, named Shanghai Video Cloud Company Limited, while Lenovo owns the remainder. The total investment of both parties in the new firm exceeded 10 million yuan (1.52 million U.S. dollars), according to the agreement.Lenovo is currently the largest personal computer maker in China. BesTV New Media is a provider of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), mobile television and other forms of new media. 

CANBERRA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Up to 45 native species in Western Australia's Kimberley region will die out within 20 years if no action is taken, latest study showed on Wednesday.The Priority Threat Management to Protect Kimberley Wildlife report, released by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) on Wednesday, was commissioned by the Wilderness Society.The report showed that at present, 20.2 million U.S. dollars a year is spent on conservation efforts in the Kimberley, which is home to an assortment of threatened species.However, the report said even if that money was spent properly, the region would still lose some 31 native animals.The numbers of many more birds, reptiles and mammals, such as the Spotted Tree Monitor and the Western Chestnut Mouse, would dwindle.It called for an immediate cash injection of 96 million U.S. dollars to save creatures like the Golden Bandicoot, the Scaly- Tailed Possum and the Monjon Rock Wallaby from extinction.It will follow by an ongoing investment of 40.43 million U.S. dollars annually in the Kimberley to protect its species, as well as boost plant life, help the climate and conserve indigenous land."This investment is great value," one of the report's six co- authors Hugh Possingham said in a statement released on Wednesday."We can save some of Australia's most iconic mammals and birds at a cost of only about one million U.S. dollars per species per year."
