Some customers are reporting delays of four months or more assuming you can find the item you want in stock.Like everything else, the coronavirus pandemic has complicated distribution for the furniture business, and no one is immune to the problem of supply, demand and disruption."This has been a fundamental shock to the system,” says Michael Miller, chief operating officer at Convey, a technology company that helps retailers do better deliveries.“Our network has over 5 billion shipping events so we track every single data point from when a package leaves a fulfillment center, goes on a truck, goes to all of the different handoffs, and then reaches your door,” Miller added.Convey supports big, small and specialty retailers. Miller says the disruption in online business is complicated. And while things are getting better amid attempts to rebound and adjust to a new normal, there's a lot that can't be fixed overnight.“People are getting creative but the common denominator is they need more drivers, they need more trucks, they need more warehouses to keep up with this demand,” Miller said.Modloft, a Miami-based company that sells elite, contemporary and modern furniture, has 60% of its items on backorder, which company chief marketing officer Sean O’Brien said is “historic.”The “factory could have a delay, the transit company could have a delay bringing it into port, the port could have a delay, the warehouse could have a delay, there’s all sorts of places along the line where things can get backed up and we have to be good about communicating to the customer what’s happening and when,” O’Brien said.Modloft saw a good April and a historic summer for sales, breaking company records But, like all other businesses who are trying to get customers their goods as fast as possible, stock is a problem.“Customers are frustrated they can’t get a particular sofa or color they want for 90 days and this is happening at all brands,” O’Brien said. Customers “may have been to four other stores and come to us as the fifth and still frustrated with the same experience.”A-list celebrities are Modloft customers, like professional athletes and Grammy-nominated recording artists, but no matter your name, your wait time will be the same.“If you see something you like, grab it,” Miller said. “There are definitely supply shortages out there. This is very, very important.”Convey says customers should sign up for alerts, make sure an estimated delivery date is clearly displayed before you buy, and be patient. In 2016, President Obama used the Affordable Care Act to extend federal sex discrimination protections to people who identify as transgender.But after a recent move by the Trump administration, some of those protections are now gone.“What happened with the recent Trump administration ruling is that they basically said they were taking out that definition of sex discrimination and stated that it only applied to a person’s birth sex and couldn’t be applied to their gender identity and that they were no longer going to enforce any protections on the basis of gender identity," said Dr. Eliabeth Kvach. “I think there’s something to be said, to think about what it’s like to be a person where the government says you don’t deserve to get accessible health care,” said Andrew MillerKvach and Miller both work at Denver Health in Colorado. Both call the recent rule change in DC a direct threat to the lives of transgender men and women.“We have for example, 300 patients on our list to be able to receive vaginoplasty or gender confirming surgery for transgender women. And if you’re waiting years to get that surgery and then all of a sudden you’re worried about whether your insurance is going to cover it, that is enormously psychologically devastating to people,” said Kvach.“I think that we’re already seeing that with cases coming out of hospitals denying care to transgender and non-binary folks," said Miller.“I certainly think that it is dangerous to the lives of transgender and non-binary people,” said Kvach.Denver Health is a LGBTQ+ Center of Excellence. For the health system it means any patient regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or other LGBTQ identification can receive treatment from any doctor for any health need“LGBTQ health care isn’t specialty care, it’s just health care,” said Miller.And while Miller is an employee at Denver Health, this is an extra important issue for him personally.“I identify as a transgender man, and as I said before, my pronouns are he, him, his. I was born female, and at a certain point in my life, I recognized that being a woman didn’t fit for me, it was like I was living this false life,” said MillerFor him, and many trans people, being called the wrong name or the wrong pronoun isn’t just a simple mistake“When we say hey, my name is Andrew, that’s what I go by, but you call me my birth name, what I hear is, 'It doesn’t matter that I told you my name.' You get to be more of an expert on me than I get to be on me. Why should I feel safe that you’re going to actually take care of me, if you can’t even call me my name?” Miller said.For trans people around the country, this rule change might mean they could be denied hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery. Procedures the transgender and health care providers who treat them, deem medically necessary.“Medical treatment with hormones and with surgery help a person’s body align with who they are, with their gender identity,” Kvach said.But it also means they have to be worried about being denied treatment for anything from a sore throat to life saving surgery.“I’m from the south, I think about it all the time. What it would be like to go back home and have a medical emergency and not be able to get care. To be a person denied health care, and it’s terrifying,” said Miller.And that increased anxiety can lead to bad health outcomes from avoiding preventative treatment to suicide.A survey from the Trevor Project released this month shows that more than half of kids who identify as transgender and nonbinary have seriously considered suicide in the last 12 months.While this rule change may be disheartening to many, institutions like Denver Health reaffirm their commitment to treating transgender people, like people“I want folks to be able to go to the doctor and feel safe. HOUSTON (AP) — Shackled at their ankles and wrists and their shoelaces removed, a long line of men and women waited on the tarmac as a team of officers patted them down and checked inside their mouths for anything hidden.Then one by one, they climbed a mobile staircase and onto a charter plane the size of a commercial aircraft.This was a deportation flight run by ICE Air. The chains would be removed and the shoelaces returned when the plane landed in El Salvador.An obscure division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operates hundreds of flights each year to remove immigrants. Deportation flights are big business: The U.S. government has spent approximately billion on them in the last decade, and the Trump administration is seeking to raise ICE's budget for charter flights by 30 percent.ICE Air Operations transports detained immigrants between American cities and, for those with final removal orders, back to their home countries. About 100,000 people a year are deported on such flights.While Mexican immigrants are generally flown to southern U.S. cities and then driven to the border so they can cross over, Central Americans have to be transported by air. And the large numbers of Mexicans who used to cross the border have largely been replaced by migrants from three impoverished Central American countries: El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.According to flight-tracking data, deportation flights to Guatemala and Honduras have sharply increased this year. And ICE's budget request for charter flights increased 30 percent last year compared to the year before.The agency estimated last year that it spends about ,785 per hour on the flights.ICE shifted to chartering private planes about a decade ago after previously using a government service with the U.S. Marshals. The agency says moving to private flights saves about million a year and gave it more flexibility. Charter flights also avoid putting large numbers of deported immigrants on commercial planes, which requires buying tickets for deportation officers accompanying them, or holding them in the U.S. for longer than necessary and tying up space in detention centers."I don't want to elongate anybody's detention with us," said Pat Contreras, director of enforcement and removal for ICE's Houston field office. "If a judge says you need to be removed, we should be expeditiously working to execute that order so that person does not spend any longer in detention than necessary."But migrant advocacy groups say ICE Air is an example of how tougher immigration enforcement — from detention to tracking to removal — enriches private companies."The way you would save money on ICE Air is by deporting fewer people, not by privatizing the industry," said Bob Libal, director of Grassroots Leadership, which opposes immigration detention."ICE is a largely privatized agency," Libal said. "In many ways, it's been captured by the industries that profit from deportation and detention."The Associated Press observed a deportation flight being loaded last month at a private terminal of Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.The Boeing 737 had no markings suggesting it was a deportation flight. Instead, it had the insignia of Swift Air, a private company that also flies charters for political campaigns and professional sports teams, including the NHL's Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. In this case, Swift Air had been hired by Classic Air Charters, a Huntington, New York-based company that won ICE's deportation flights contract last year.Classic Air has been paid million this year by ICE, according to federal spending records. The previous contractor, CSI Aviation of New Mexico, was paid 6 million by ICE's removals division since 2010, when ICE privatized its flights.When the plane landed in Houston, about 30 Salvadoran immigrants were already on board, flown in from Alexandria, Louisiana, an ICE Air hub. They peered out the windows as the plane sat on the tarmac.Two buses arrived, carrying 45 men and five women. Their few belongings were in red mesh bags that workers sorted on the tarmac.Officers checked each detainee before letting them board, a process that took about 20 minutes.According to the agency, 29 of the 50 people who boarded the plane in Houston had been arrested on criminal charges, including four who were wanted in El Salvador for attempted murder or homicide, the agency said.The remaining 21 were considered non-criminal, meaning they were being deported for immigration violations. Twenty of the 50 had been deported before.ICE would not let AP reporters view the inside of the plane, but officials said the flights are orderly and quiet. A meal is served, and a doctor is on board. But all detainees — even those considered non-criminal — remain shackled until the plane lands."We try and be as humane as we can with everything that we do," Contreras said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will keep the House in session until another round of COVID-19 stimulus passes through Congress.Pelosi made the comments Tuesday morning during an interview on CNBC."We are committed to staying here until we have an agreement — an agreement that meets the needs of the American people," Pelosi said, according to CNN. "We're optimistic that the White House at least will understand that we have to do some things."Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, the chairman of the House Democratic caucus said during a press conference Tuesday that the caucus remains committed to staying in session until Congress passes a "meaningful" stimulus package.The House is slated to remain in session through Oct. 2. Traditionally, lawmakers would then return to their districts to begin campaigning ahead of election day.Congress has passed several COVID-19 stimulus bills since the pandemic reached the U.S. in February. However, key provisions of the largest stimulus bill, the CARES Act, expired weeks ago. Among those were 0 weekly benefits to those on unemployment.Even though unemployment remains historically high in the U.S. both the House and Senate adjourned for their annual August break.In May, the Democrat-led House passed the HEROES Act, a trillion stimulus plan that would, among other things, extend unemployment benefits through the end of the year. That bill has not been considered for passage in the Senate.During his press conference Tuesday, Jeffries said Democrats would be willing to cut the funding they proposed in the HEROES Act by a third.
