DETROIT — "They strictly thought their so-called white privilege was gonna work this time and it didn't," said Marc Peeples who was acquitted in a directed verdict in a case where three women, who are white, accused Peeples, who is black, of stalking them. The women repeatedly called Detroit Police on Peeples, an urban farmer, who said he wanted to grow a garden in his old neighborhood in the area of 8 Mile and John R on the city's east side. In the beginning, Peeples said one of the women donated soil to his project, but then he and his attorney say it became about power, race and false allegations."These women were clearly lying," said Peeples who was shocked when Detroit Police arrested him after prosecutors charged him with three misdemeanor counts of stalking. This was a case of "gardening while black" said defense attorney Robert Burton-Harris, who represented Peeples at trial.Harris said this is similar to other cases around the country where "you have people calling the police on, mostly,?African-Americans for doing very mundane things.""I wasn't doing anything but planting a seed to help my community grow," said Peeples. 36th District Court Judge E. Lynise Bryant told WXYZ that the women filed false police reports and made up allegations that Peeples had been convicted of being a pedophile and that he had a gun. "I very much believed that the only reason that they called the police on Mr. Peeples being in their neighborhood was because of his race," said Judge Bryant. "It was clearly, in my opinion, that these ladies had engaged in not only harassment of Mr. Peeples but illegal conduct towards Mr. Peeples."But a friend of one of the women told WXYZ that the only reason for the acquittal is that the assistant prosecutor handling the case was poorly prepared. "You think she moved into this neighborhood to be called a racist," he said about his friend who declined an interview.WXYZ has not been able to reach the other two women for comment.A spokesperson for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement: 2155

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Train traffic in Del Mar was stopped Wednesday, after a cliff collapse near 11th Street. It was a beautiful afternoon for sun and surf until the earth came tumbling down. Del Mar resident, Ingrid Hoffmeister has seen it for years - the cliffs in front of her home, slowly disappearing.“We all know it’s happening, so it’s not a surprise," Hoffmeister said. “It’s getting closer and closer to the path of where you’re walking.”Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, plumes of dust filled the air, as enormous chunks of the Del Mar cliffs came crumbling down onto the beach. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump's economic response to the coronavirus pandemic, hours after a jobs report Friday said that economic growth showed a modest gain in jobs.Biden said that there was a "cause for concern" in Friday's report, noting that the U.S. job growth slowed between July and August."More temporary layoffs are turning into permanent layoffs," Biden said."More temporary layoffs are turning into permanent layoffs," Biden said.Biden claimed Thursday that Trump's inaction on the virus has caused the U.S. economy to lag behind in recovery efforts compared to other countries. He also criticized Trump for not being more proactive in attempting to bring Congress together to strike a deal for another COVID-19 stimulus package."Bottom line, Mr. President: Do your job. Get off your golf course," Biden said.Biden's address took place from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. This week has been one of the most active weeks of the Biden campaign since he clinched the party's nomination. On Monday, Biden delivered an address from Pittsburgh in which he blamed President Donald Trump for a series of violent attacks against protesters throughout the country. On Wednesday, he took questions from reporters following an address about education amid the pandemic, and he traveled to Kensoha, Wisconsin, on Thursday to meet with the family of Jacob Blake.President Donald Trump has often attacked Biden for running a passive campaign, accusing him of "hiding" while Trump attends rallies across the country. 1574

Damaging winds are agitating wildfires in Southern California on Thursday, forcing firefighters to stifle the flames. The largest of the fires was the Bond Fire, which claimed 7,200 acres of Orange County vegetation by early Thursday afternoon. The inferno was 0% contained as of Thursday afternoon, and doubled in size in just a matter of a few hours.Much of Southern California was placed under a red flag warning, high wind warning, and fire weather watch. Gusts are expected to reach 65 mph throughout the region, with some areas topping 80 mph gusts. The National Weather Service warned any fire that develops on Thursday could spread rapidly. There is also concern of down trees and power lines, which could add to the wildfire threat.Orange County Fire Authority issued mandatory evacuation orders for seven areas, and an additional seven areas were placed under voluntary evacuation orders due to the Bond Fire.Fire officials in Orange County said they were called to a structure fire in Silverado Canyon late last night that had spread into the brush."We had erratic, strong Santa Ana winds that quickly pushed the flames from the house into the vegetation," said Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy. "The fire grew rapidly." Fennessy said the Bond Fire has drawn a "robust response" from multiple agencies. Five-hundred firefighters are working to stop the Bond Fire, Fennessy said. As of mid-afternoon, Fennessy said a number of homes were damaged, but did not have an exact number. Orange County Fire Authority confirmed that two firefighters were injured battling the fire. 1607
