A new campaign is bringing attention to an issue that hasn't been front and center since the pandemic started – missing children.“There has been a lot of awareness, a lot of things have changed, but regarding her case, unfortunately there's nothing,” said Jessica Nu?ez about her missing 15-year-old daughter, Alicia Navarro.Navarro, who has autism, was 14 when she vanished in the middle of the night last September from her home in Glendale, Arizona.Alicia played online games and her mother thinks she was lured away by someone she met online. They had even discussed the dangers in therapy.“And then she wrote me a letter where she sweared to me she was coming back, so that’s what has me very worried, because I know her intention was for her to come back and that’s why I won’t stop looking,” said Nu?ez. “I won’t stop looking until I get answers because it’s been so long.”In a new effort to bring attention to missing children like Alicia Navarro, their pictures will be featured on some gas station pump video screens. Alicia's picture will be up in Arizona. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is coordinating the effort featuring various different missing children's pictures in the states they disappeared from. Her mother wants people to know she looks young for her age and has a noticeable scar on her right knuckles.“People tend to forget so my goal is to continue sharing her story and having her image out there,” said Nu?ez.There's also a Facebook page, called "Finding Alicia," where you can share her picture. 1557

A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown. Neal had been placed on administrative leave while the district investigated.Neal's resignation came less than a week after Scripps station WTVF in Nashville?uncovered the recording from inside a meeting of schools maintenance employees.Recording Reveals Plan To 'Bypass' Lead FilterFor the past nine months, WVTF has exposed data kept secret by the district showing high lead levels in some Metro schools. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause learning and behavioral problems in children. In response, a number of schools installed special fountains that were supposed to filter out the lead. Some of them were purchased by parents themselves. But the recording revealed Neal's plan to dismantle those efforts.Listen to the audio below:"People keep wanting these bottle fillers, but they are adamant about them being filtered," Neal told his employees. "I'm saying we cannot support it.From the beginning, Neal downplayed the threat posed by lead in the schools' drinking water -- despite results showing levels well above what pediatricians say is safe. Audio Sparks Outrage, Mayor Calls For AnswerStill, some 30 schools installed hydration stations specifically designed to filter out the lead — some of them purchased by the parents themselves. On the recording, Neal revealed: "I did ask Troy if he would have one of his guys go through the exercise of bypassing the filter just to see how that works."But those fountains are equipped with lights that show when the filters are working and when they need to be replaced. So Neal's team came up with a solution for that, too."We've got to figure out what we are going to do with these hundred, or 97, filtered ones that we have out there," Neal told his subordinates. An unidentified woman interrupted, "Bust the light out.""Huh, do what?" Neal asked."Take the light bulb out," she answered."Well, that's one thing," Neal agreed. "But we need to also probably, if we can, bypass the filter."Neal's concern was money.MNPS Spokesperson Questions Need For Filters"If we were to replace a filter, you're talking — I don't know if any of y'all have bought them — it's something like 70 or 80 bucks," Neal said.An unidentified man responded, "."Neal said, "That's almost ,000 a year just for filters, OK, on what we have now."After disclosure of the record, Schools Director Dr. Shawn Joseph condemned the comments captured on the recording."As a parent of two Metro Schools children and as the Director of Schools, the idea that a supervisor would discuss a workaround on our water fountains knowing that this is a huge concern for many families is upsetting and unacceptable," Joseph said.Nashville Mayor David Briley also said that "obviously, if the report is true, that person shouldn't be responsible for protecting our children from lead in their drinking water." 3312

A viral video showing security camera footage taken in Chula Vista, California on Halloween night may help restore your faith in the honor system. Kim Manalo's family joined the throngs of trick-or-treaters racing door-to-door in their neighborhood. Manalo wanted to keep the spirit of Halloween alive at her home while they were out, so she left a bowl filled with candy outside their door with a note asking people to help themselves. Her hope was that people would leave a treat for the next candy-seeker."We came home to an empty bowl and hoped there weren't greedy kids that didn't leave some behind for others," Manalo wrote on her post. She studied security footage to see if perhaps someone grabbed more than their share of goodies. What Manalo found on her security camera video was a surprise that almost made her cry."Instead we found this clip of a wonderful soul who shared some candy from his own bag to keep the halloween spirit going for other kids," Manalo she wrote. The video shows one of the boys reach into his bag and place some of his own candy in the bowl for the next trick-or-treaters. “He didn't even know the camera was there,” Manalo said. “None of his friends knew and to take that second out of his time from his own stuff just really warmed my heart.”San Diego-based KGTV posted the surveillance video on Facebook after Manalo's friend shared the footage with reporter Joe Little. The video has garnered hundreds of reactions, shares, and comments."If only all of us raised our children to be so thoughtful even when no one is seemingly looking. He will change the world someday if he keeps it up," wrote Jeremy Ellis. The identity of the thoughtful boy remains a mystery, but numerous adoring Facebook fans are looking for clues to thank him for inspiring the spirit of community. 1941
