SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new COVID-19 testing site opened Wednesday morning at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, with tests for the virus available at no cost.The free test site is located at the PedEast crossing of the Port of Entry. It will be open 6:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.About 200 tests will be administered daily, and no appointments will be necessary. San Diego County health officials said those getting tested “will not be asked about their immigration status or who lives with them.”Health officials said the site is focused on “testing essential workers and American citizens who live in Tijuana, as well as residents in the area.”Jennifer Bransford-Koons, the county’s testing director, said it’s possible the hours at the new site could eventually change.“We’re starting out first thing in the morning as people cross the border … to be able to see if that’s a good time to have people to be able to test. If that doesn’t work, then we’ll move to the afternoon or other days of the week. The purpose is to provide accessible testing to members of the public,” she said.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said, “We know that communities in South Bay have been hit the hardest by COVID-19. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is just a few days away from reuniting with his family who is in federal quarantine in Northern California at Travis Air Force Base. Ken Burnett's wife and two young children were visiting Wuhan, China when the coronavirous broke out. The city shut down and the three were stranded, unable to fly home. Their 14-day federal quarantine ends on Tuesday. Burnett plans on traveling to Northern California to reunite with his wife and kids so they can all travel back to San Diego together. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family hit hard by the pandemic is picking up the pieces after a fire gutted their home.Raegan Gaedke's brother shot cellphone video of smoke pouring out of their home on Verlane Drive on Sunday evening. Minutes before, Raegan, 16, and her brother Ryley, 17, had returned home from a grocery run, before discovering smoke in their parents' bedroom."Ran and got my dog out. My brother turned off the power and got the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The fire spread too much," said Gaedke.Their mom Cyndi, who was visiting relatives, says fire crews later told them the cause was a window air conditioner. The home they had been renting for the last 12 years is a total loss."So hard for me to comprehend we have nothing. It's all gone," said Cyndi.Cyndi says they did not have renters insurance. It's a purchase set to the side."You think you'll get back to it, and you don't. Won't make that mistake again. It's hard to describe how stressful this has been," said Cyndi.The stress levels already high since the start of the pandemic. Cyndi's husband, the breadwinner of the family and a commercial fisherman, has been out of work. His job counted on now-grounded international flights for shipping. The amount of money they family is receiving from unemployment is modest. Paying the rent had become a concern."We did have quite a bit of savings, but that's all gone. it's been tough and awful. My husband has had a lot of anxiety, as well as me," said Cyndi.Right now, family members are staying with relatives. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is preparing to uproot their lives and move across the country so their 2-year-old son can get a life-altering liver transplant.After Gavin was born, Kendra and Vince Giacalone waited nearly two years for answers on what was wrong with their son.Eventually, through exome sequencing, they learned Gavin had a rare genetic disorder: GM3 Synthase Deficiency.
