Gavin Newsom Tuesday offered a grim reminder that the disease remains deadly, saying the state has ordered 5,000 more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom said 142 coronavirus-related deaths were reported statewide in the past 24 hours. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes both fell by roughly 25 percent in September compared to August, according to data released Tuesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales decreased from 2,039 in August to 1,536 in September, a 24.7 percent decline. Condo and townhome sales fell from 1,056 to 792, a 25 percent decrease.Year-over-year sales figures were also down, with single-family home sales falling 21.6 percent from 1,958 in September 2017 to 1,536 last month, and attached property sales down 22.7 percent from 1,024 to 792 listings sold.In total, previously-owned home sales in 2018 are down 9 percent compared to the first nine months of 2017."I'm hopeful that residential sales will continue along a mostly positive line for the rest of the year," said GSDAR President Steve Fraioli. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sheriff's deputies in East County arrested 36 people today in a warrant sweep, clearing 44 misdemeanor warrants and two felony warrants.The sweep included the cities and unincorporated areas of Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, Jamul, El Cajon, La Mesa and Rancho San Diego.The Sheriff's Department's Court Services Bureau-Field Division conducted the search and arrest of people with outstanding warrants regardless of the charge or bail amount.The department encouraged people who have outstanding warrants to turn themselves in between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at any sheriff's court facilities. 633
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Wednesday in favor of a land annexation agreement for a housing development to be built in an unincorporated area near the city of San Marcos.Representatives San Marcos Highlands told the board that they have worked with numerous federal and state agencies, including the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and received approval from them.Supervisors Greg Cox, Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar voted in favor of the agreement, while Nathan Fletcher and Board Chairwoman Dianne Jacob were opposed.The San Marcos Highlands project calls for 187 single-family homes, one public park, two private parks and 210 acres of open space on the northern end of Las Posas Road stretching north to Buena Creek Road. According to the county, 152.2 acres are in the unincorporated areas of the North County Metropolitan Subregional Plan.According to the county, the annexation agreement "would not cause changes in the San Marcos Highlands project or in the circumstances under which the project is undertaken that involve significant new environmental impacts."One Vista resident asked the board to vote no on the agreement, arguing the development is not a good fit for the area.Desmond said the board was "not here to debate the merits of the project," as it already has formal approval and went through several modifications. He added that San Marcos Highlands will feature an emergency fire evacuation road.Cox said the development has a long-term management plan, open space agreement and easement."I don't see that we need to put any additional roadblocks in front of their project," he said.Jacob said that while she appreciates all the work the developer did on San Marcos Highlands, she couldn't support it."I have a long history (of) opposing projects that take property in the unincorporated area and increase density," she said.Jacob added that the board had previously down-zoned the property where San Marcos Highlands will be built, telling her colleagues that approving the annexation agreement is ignoring that past decision. 2115
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Lucky Duck Foundation announced a million region-wide homeless employment and jobs training initiative Friday, aiming to hire and train people experiencing homelessness to secure long-term employment.An anonymous donor gave the million gift in grants to expand existing programs and launch new ones, including culinary skills, homeless outreach, community beautification work, youth support services and intensive job training.The donor asked the foundation to focus on high-impact programs to help people on the streets.FACING IT TOGETHER: How San Diego is working to end homelessness"The Lucky Duck Foundation is honored to work with our generous donor to establish a results-oriented, best-in-class strategy for reducing homelessness," said Stephanie Kilkenny, the foundation's co-founder and president. "The million gift allows us to deploy much-needed funding into the region to enable individuals to receive on-the-job training and long-term employment with the ultimate goal of securing housing to break the cycle of homelessness."Kilkenny said the foundation was anticipating more than 500 people to benefit from the new and expanded programs. It chose 10 organizations to help provide some of the services, including Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Dreams for Change, National Alliance on Mental Illness and the San Diego Community College District's Continuing Education program, among others."The Lucky Duck Foundation is providing a hand-up for our North County neighbors struggling with homelessness," said Greg Anglea, CEO for Interfaith Community Services, another one of the organizations partnering with the foundation.
