SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Texas company has been awarded a contract to erect nearly 30 miles of fencing along California's border with Mexico.U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded 7 million in construction contracts to Texas-based construction company SLSCO. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and up to 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in California within the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro Sectors.The 15-mile primary pedestrian replacement wall will include the installation of a new, 30-foot steel bollard wall: About 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. According to CBP, these areas represent areas where wall replacement has been a priority. Construction for that 6 million project is slated to begin in July 2019.The secondary wall project is a 1 million contract and will include up to 14 miles of the same 30-foot steel bollard wall adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently under construction. Construction of that project is projected to begin February 2019.SLSCO has already worked on border construction earlier this year, constructing new steel fencing in Border Field State Park.The two projects are a part of President Trump's "Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements" executive order, which calls for a contiguous wall to be built along the southern U.S. border with Mexico, according to CBP. 1447

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. The two sides are now working together on solutions to any concerns.“Part of the confusion is there are multiple clinical trials happening at the same time,” said Maldonado. “A lot of these clinical trials are happening in communities where there is a lack of communication. We did meet with UC San Diego, and we are going to be working with them in making sure that our community receives the education around these clinical trials.”Maldonado said community outreach would ensure that volunteers have all of the information necessary to make informed decisions.“When outreach is done in a way that is respectful to the community that different then some of the other approaches that other clinical trials are taking,” she said.UCSD made it clear that this trial is entirely voluntary, and consent forms will be available in English and Spanish.“I would just encourage anyone who has any questions or who might also be confused about the different trials and what’s going on, to contact the community-based organization that they know and trust to get some more information,” said Maldonado.The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego tradition will return this holiday season, though not to the same stage we're used to seeing.The Old Globe's production of "Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" won't be taking the theater's stage this year, instead, coming to audiences on the radio and online. The free, audio-only production can be heard on 89.5 FM and can also be streamed on the KPBS website or mobile app, and on smart speakers on Nov. 26, Dec. 5, and Dec. 20 at 12 p.m.; and Dec. 24 at 6 p.m.Of course, fans of the show can expect their favorite songs, including "Santa for a Day," "You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," and "Welcome, Christmas (Fah Who Doraze)."And though live showings at the Old Globe are canceled until further notice due to the pandemic, another piece of holiday cheer will return outside of the theater. The 15th annual Globe Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place virtually on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. and can be viewed on the Globe's website or social media channels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An SUV reported stolen crashed as it fled from San Diego police, killing three of the vehicle’s occupants.At around 11 p.m. Tuesday, police were near the intersection of 24th Street and Island Avenue in Sherman Heights when they spotted a silver 2003 Honda Pilot SUV traveling without its headlights on, before learning that it was reported stolen a day earlier by Chula Vista Police.The driver ran a red light while traveling east on Market Street, according to SDPD. When officers tried to pull the SUV over, the driver sped away towards Interstate 15.Officers lost sight of the vehicle. Moments later, with a police helicopter tracking the SUV, the vehicle lost control and crashed into a pole on Market Street, near Raven Street, in the Mount Hope area.According to police, two of the four people inside were ejected from the vehicle and two others were trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders took one person to the hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, but they are expected to survive. The driver and two other passengers were declared dead at the scene, police said.No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.The initial investigation revealed that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts as the vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph just before the crash, police said. 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - About two dozen businesses and houses of worship are taking advantage of a new rule that waives permit fees at San Diego County parks.According to the San Diego Parks and Rec Department, 14 fitness-related businesses and 12 houses of worship have been approved for permits to operate in county parks.RELATED: County Board Approves Plan to Allow Businesses to Operate at County ParksOn Aug. 5, San Diego County Supervisors approved a motion to waive permit fees and streamline the permit process so that businesses and houses of worship could hold events and classes in parks.Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who made the initial request, called it a "creative" way to provide flexibility and help those businesses survive the coronavirus pandemic."We're trying to make it as easy as possible for businesses to survive during this difficult time," Jacob told ABC 10News on the day the rule passed. "This is just another way to do it."Kaylee Kiff owns The Dance Spot in Chula Vista. She says she applied for the permit as soon as she heard about the program. She began holding classes at Otay Lakes Park just a few days later.Kiff says it saved her business."This was the first time I really felt supported as a business," Kiff says of the new rule. "I understand why we shut down, and I was happy to do it. But when it got to the point where I would lose my business, I'm just looking for any lifeline I could get. The county really was that lifeline."A county spokesperson didn't say how many more businesses or houses of worship have applied for the fee-free permits, but told ABC 10News other applications are in process for approval.Since the county changed its rules, several other cities have followed suit, including San Diego, El Cajon, Coronado, La Mesa, and Oceanside.
