NEW ORLEANS, La. – The oldest known U.S. veteran of World War II celebrated his 111th birthday over the weekend and he did it in style.Like it has for the past five years, The National WWII Museum hosted a birthday celebration for Lawrence Brooks on Saturday. This year though, they followed social distancing guidelines and the centenarian enjoyed the festivities from his home in New Orleans.From his porch, Brooks watched as military planes from the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team and The Big Easy Wing flew over just for him.The museum also had its vocal trio, The Victory Belles, perform a series of numbers for Brooks, including “Happy Birthday.”Lastly, Brooks was presented with a cake, a recorded message from the museum’s CEO, and nearly 10,000 birthday cards collected as a result of a national card drive.“It is such an honor to have the oldest living U.S. veteran of World War II living so close to our institution, and it was meaningful for us to continue to celebrate Lawrence Brooks and his incredible life in a safe manner this year,” said the museum’s assistant director of public engagement, Amber Mitchell, in a press release. “As we continue to lose members of The Greatest Generation, it is so important that we honor these men and women for their bravery and sacrifice while they are with us.”Brooks served in the predominantly African American 91st Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines during WWII, according to the museum. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, are donating 0 million toward student scholarships at historically black colleges and universities. The couple is giving million to each of three institutions: the United Negro College Fund, Spelman College and Morehouse College. The organizations said it is the largest individual gift in support of student scholarships at HBCUs. Hastings has a history of supporting educational causes, including charter schools. Nine-year-old Jacob Thompson is your average kid. His obsessions include Minecraft and Legos, and he's a huge "Star Wars" fan.He's also a photographer, singer and comedian, according to his stepmother, Tara Artinyan. And most of all, he really, really loves penguins.But Jacob has Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and doctors told his family in early October he probably only had a month to live.So they'll celebrate Christmas early this year, and Jacob wants people to celebrate with him by sending him cards, his mother, Michelle Simard told CNN."He got some cards from this Halloween, and he opened up and saw them and it was like getting a gift. He read it to us and had a big smile his face and his nose scrunched," Jacob's father, Roger Guay, told CNN in a phone interview. "He was excited to see what people had to say and it just brightened his day."Fighting a long battleJacob was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma when he was 5. According to the American Cancer Society, only half of children diagnosed with the disease reach the five-year survival mark.After Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on October 11, doctors discovered that the neuroblastoma had spread to his head and was incurable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his mother."People have called him an old soul and I believe it because he has taught us so much about life and about people," said Guay. "He's accomplished everything that he needed to do by 9 years old, and a lot of people don't accomplish that, ever."An early ChristmasArtinyan said the family decided to "fast-forward" Christmas to give Jacob one last celebration.And for him, that means a lot of snow, a decked-out tree, and of course, a real-life Santa Claus.But before his improvised Christmas celebration takes place in early November, Jacob asked for cards from anyone around the world who wanted to share his Christmas spirit.And only five days after he announced his wish, he has already received more than 100 cards from people all over the country -- and even beyond."We got over a hundred, and they're from all over the world. We have some from the Netherlands, from Australia, from Denmark," said Artinyan. "We've heard from all over the world at this point. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for two suspects they say attacked a woman who asked them to put on masks in a Brooklyn subway station.Authorities said the assault occurred inside the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station last Friday afternoon.According to the NYPD, as a man and a woman were about to get on a station elevator, the 60-year-old victim asked if they could wear a mask if they wanted to ride the elevator with her.According to police, the pair refused. Surveillance video shows the two try to forcefully push past her.When the woman tried to prevent them from getting on the elevator with her, the two suspects hit her repeatedly in the face and body, authorities said. The male and female then fled the scene.Police said the victim suffered bruising to her face and pain to her legs.
