STUART, Florida — A 29-year-old teacher at Stuart Middle School was arrested Thursday night and charged with sexual battery after incidents with a 13-year-old girl at the school.According to a Martin County Sheriff's Office report, the investigation began when a school resource was alerted on March 27 regarding suspicious behavior involving a seventh-grade math teacher. The teacher, later identified as Jeffrey Tomasulo, was accused of tickling several female students, causing them to feel uncomfortable.Detectives interviewed the girls, who said they were tickled on their stomachs, thighs and armpits. Surveillance video taken outside of Tomasulo's classroom during first period on March 20 showed a 13-year-old seventh-grade girl knocking on his door. At that time, Tomasulo has a planning period and not teaching a class.Video showed the girl entering his classroom 9:15 a.m. At 9:17 a.m., video shows Tomasulo opening the door and checking the outside handle of the door. The girl then leaves the room with Tomasulo at 9:27 a.m. On March 28, the girl's mother was interviewed by a detective. The woman said that her daughter admitted to performing oral sex on Tomasulo in his classroom. The girl told the detective and a state attorney victim advocate that the teacher asked her "creepy" questions about her virginity. She said Tomasulo asked her to stay longer after class and occasionally come to his classroom either during first or last period. The teen said she felt pressured by him and that's why she performed oral sex on him approximately five times from January 4 to March 20.At first, Tomasulo denied any sexual involvement with the girl but did say he was alone with her on several occasions to tutor her.He admitted to watching pornography in his classroom but said he was alone. Eventually, Tomasulo told detectives that the girl performed oral sex on him while alone his classroom.    Tomasulo was charged with sexual battery/custodial authority. He made his first appearance in court Friday morning where his bond was set at 0,000. He remains in jail Friday. 2221

SYRACUSE, New York — It’s training many teachers have never seen, and it’s designed to let staff feel what it might be like to have a school shooter attacking. These teachers are physically learning to team up and do battle with a shooter, and they are being taught to focus on a shooter's hands.Teacher’s aid Melissa Demjanenko used tennis balls to train in place of staplers, tape dispensers or chairs she would really use to defend her classroom."I think of myself as not a powerful person. ... What can I do to stop something? Now I know I can do something. Now I know everyone in this room can do something," Demjanenko said. The training considers the idea that when people are in the most stressful situation of their lives, and they think they're just going to react a certain way ... they recognize they won't, Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Czyz said.People need muscle memory, and to get that, a person needs to have gone through similar stress, he said.Czyz started the training company Armored One.He says running to safety is your best bet, then hide if you can’t run.Along with other current and former law enforcement he teaches teachers lessons that go beyond the classroom and beyond the school lessons we can all use if running or hiding aren’t an option.“Your game plan of what you will do in case something happens: I hear gunshots behind me in front of me next to me. Which way am I going? What am I doing if I have to fight back.? What am I going to use for weapons? ... Literally in a few seconds."Everywhere you go you can have these plans already and it could save your life," Czyz said. We asked if he does that in every building he goes into. “Absolutely.”Police officers regularly train at the gun range; flight attendants on the airplane train for weeks to help people get out alive. This is why some school districts have decided teachers also need to train physically — to protect students. Before this training, in a mock active shooter drill — teachers reacted painfully slow, taking more than 30 seconds to exit the room.Czyz was brutally honest.“If my own kids were in here, I would be disgusted with you. Pretend like your own kids are in here, right?" he said.Czyz's team demonstrated how to barricade a door and use other things around to block and protect one's self. The taechers then tried again. There was a huge difference after the training — teachers cleared the room in around 10 seconds. The sheriff's department says it works hard to make sure the teachers are in their space, so training is done in the school where the teachers actually work. They get first-hand experience in their building.Planning ahead and practicing is what these teachers say now gives them the confidence to wage war against an attacker if they have no other choice. 2858

The assistant commandant of the Marine Corps has tested positive for the coronavirus, days after he and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were in a Pentagon meeting with a Coast Guard leader who was infected with the virus. The Marine Corps says Gen. Gary L. Thomas tested positive for COVID-19. He attended a meeting of the Joint Chiefs on Friday. U.S. officials say none of the other top military leaders in the meeting, including Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have so far tested positive. Still, his positive test raises worrying questions about the health of the others at the meeting, including the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and National Guard. 710

The American Academy of Pediatrics is clarifying their stance on reopening schools this fall, pushing for science-based decisions and calling on Congress to provide necessary federal funding for campuses to reopen safely. The AAP, joining together with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA) and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, said they share the desire to welcome children back to schools this fall, however safety concerns must be considered.“Returning to school is important for the healthy development and well-being of children, but we must pursue re-opening in a way that is safe for all students, teachers and staff. Science should drive decision-making on safely reopening schools. Public health agencies must make recommendations based on evidence, not politics,” the statement reads. They go on to say a one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate, given the nature of the pandemic across the country. 975

TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Monday, new details emerged about a fight on the field. The student at the center of it all is from Chula Vista. Cell phone video shows people pushing and shoving each other on the field. The violent scene unfolding in the middle of a soccer tournament in Temecula. A stampede of hundreds of parents and children running from what they thought was an active shooter. Erik Saur shared video in the moments before he grabbed his 9-year-old daughter. RELATED: Temecula police investigating reports of man brandishing a gun during youth soccer tournament“I felt like a tidal wave. You can hear them say shooting process. You don’t process gotta get out of there," Saur said. The incident happened Sunday at Galway Downs. A video captured the moment the chaos started. 10-year-old boys started fighting when spectators swarmed the field. One of the boys that was hurt was from the Albion Team in Chula Vista. In the midst of the chaos, a man who had a camouflage duffel bag caused hysteria. “He rushes to the sideline and he pulls out the backpack and someone is telling him ‘don’t do it’ they said must have a weapon.”The man was detained by deputies for a short time. Investigators say there was no weapon, but the fear was real. The father of the child injured says his son will be okay. Coaches and parents plan to meet later this evening to discuss safety measures moving forward. Albion issued a statement Tuesday, saying in part they are working closely with the California State Soccer Association and U.S. Soccer to create higher standards and stricter consequence for sideline issues:"As a youth soccer community, we want to check in with all our families after the situation we encountered during the tournament this past weekend. We also want to commend our families for their commitment to excellence as a sideline maintaining sportsmanship and class always. For years, we have witnessed youth sports becoming too emotional on the sidelines, and we have worked to educate our families and bring forth guidelines to ensure: safety, respect, sportsmanship, and class. Unfortunately, this is not the case with every team or club we play against. We will continue to guide our staff and families to always be in control and work toward being the leaders in the industry. After this weekend we are committed to not only holding us to be the best in practice, but are working closely with Cal South and US Soccer to create higher standards and push for stricter consequences for sidelines and issues that cross the line.We appreciate everyone’s support and recognition of the situation; and hope that as a community, as Albion SC, we use this as an opportunity to help improve and change the landscape and support and remind everyone that this is just a game. It is a game meant for the players and a place we want our players to always feel safe to play this beautiful sport." 2912
