A small business in Brooklyn is taking on Congress, lobbying for insurance coverage for future pandemics. While not an easy battle, the National Retail Federation says these conversations have to be had now in order to keep retailers open.Ann Cantrell, speaking in front of the US House Financial Services Committee, said, "The past few months have been the darkest of my life.”The owner of "Annie's Blue Ribbon General Store" in Brooklyn said it's time for real solutions."Insurance companies should not be in the practice of denying policy holders coverage when they need it the most. What happened to 'you're in good hands' or 'like a good neighbor,' Cantrell said.Speaking on behalf of the National Retail Federation, Cantrell pleaded her case, saying, "We are a community store and people look to us as a pillar of light and hope in the neighborhood. Kids meet their friends at the shop to pick out a gift for their teacher, parents bribe their kids with a treat if they get a shot at the doctor or reward them if they get a good report card."The pandemic, she said, nearly shut her business down. She said she pays ,000 a year for what she calls "all risk" insurance. She was under the impression there was no risk that wouldn't be covered.“When we (were) closed by the governor (New York’s Andrew Cuomo), literally the government shut us down,” Cantrell said. “I put in another call, each time saying that viruses were not covered under business interruption insurance.”The National Retail Federation said Cantrell is a voice for retailers everywhere. And while it was able to get a hearing, the organization says many insurance companies aren't on board.“What they’re saying is this will not be isolated to one area, this seems to be unending and keeps going on and on and on so they’re afraid it’ll cost trillions of dollars,” said Leon Buck, the National Retail Federation’s vice president of banking and financial services. “But what we’re saying is we don’t think so. We think if we’re paying into the fund and the federal government has money, the insurance companies will be fine."“If we were in a COVID-21, for instance, if this happened again, maybe another virus, the business would be protected,” Buck added. “They’d file a claim with their insurance carrier whom they pay monthly premiums to and the federal government would help pick up the tab.”As for Cantrell, who has loved general stores since she was a kid, this is about speaking up because someone has to.“It's not just small companies like mine, it’s big companies. No one is covered under business interruption insurance,” Cantrell said.Luckily, she said she built a good website and the holidays and her Paycheck Protection Program loan will carry her through. A poll commissioned by CNN and conducted by SSRS showed a majority of Americans are embarrassed by how the US has responded to the coronavirus pandemic, and are angry about the way things are going in the nation. The poll conducted August 12 through 15 was released on Wednesday.The poll surveyed 1,108 Americans, 31% of whom are Democrats, 27% of whom are Republicans, and the remaining 42% being either independent or a third-party supporter.The poll has a 3.7% margin of error.Here are the highlights:68% of Americans are embarrassed by America’s coronavirus response, compared to 28% who say they’re proud51% said they’re “very angry” about the direction of the country; 27% said they’re somewhat angry57% said there should not be in-person learning in their community, compared to 37% who said their local schools should be open for in-person learning49% said that pro sports should not be played, compared to 46% who say games should be playedAs far as marks on President Donald Trump, 51% approve of his handling of the economy, compared to 44% who disapprove. While most Americans approve of his handling of the economy, 62% said he could be doing more to combat the coronavirus.The number of Americans who are personally impacted by the virus has also increased in recent months. When the poll was last conducted in June, only 40% of Americans said they personally knew someone who was infected by the virus. A scary moment happened for parents and young kids when a fight broke out at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club near Lindell Road and Edna Avenue in Las Vegas.It's not clear yet how it all started but from the video, it appears that a number of adults were involved. But what concerns parents most is there were a lot of young children, even babies in the audience when the fight started. What seemed like a heated argument turns into a fistfight within seconds. People were throwing wild punches, shoving and tackling each other as others tried to break the fight.Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas spoke with a parent who was at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club. Concerned with his kid's safety, he did not want to be identified."It was scary you know just to know that all those kids around, and how fast the situation escalated... just one second everybody was having fun and the next second it was chaos," the parent said. "It was a 'think fast' moment because the kids were close. More than anything it was just getting the kids out of the way and then figuring out what was going on."KTNV reached out to Boys and Girls Club and the National Youth Sports League which oversees the game.The League responded saying it is still "gathering facts" saying, "If found that any of the individuals were involved in our league they will be immediately removed and we will press charges.
