SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego nursing homes are now dealing with positive cases of COVID-19. La Vida Real, an assisted living center in Rancho San Diego, confirmed to 10News that four of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.The facility is one of 32 owned by the Senior Resource Group. It’s the second local assisted living center to be hit with COVID-19. This Wednesday, San Diego County officials confirmed to 10News a positive case at Stellar Care Center, just south of the College Area. Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes keeps growing: In Kirkland, Washington, an outbreak at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths. In Louisiana, eleven deaths have now been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, three patients at a nursing home have now died after testing positive.La Vida Real issued a statement to 10News, detailing how the company is handling the coronavirus cases:"La Vida Real has communicated with residents and their families, and is in close contact with San Diego County health officials, after learning that four staff members in our assisted living and memory care building tested positive for COVID-19. We are monitoring the situation closely and requiring all staff in the assisted living and memory care building to wear masks when inside the building and use personal protective equipment when interacting with residents showing any symptoms, per CDC guidelines. Out of an abundance of caution we are also working with the health department to test one additional employee and four residents in memory care.We will continue to follow CDC and public health department guidance and take the steps necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and staff. We are committed to continue the rigorous protective measures and precautionary actions we have implemented in this challenging environment. And while the effects of this virus are impacting everyone, we take protecting our residents and employees very seriously."Additionally, the organization says they continue to take extensive precautionary measures for residents and staff at the community, including:Visits are limited to essential visitors only. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday.In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made an unpublicized visit to a Poway Unified School District campus on Thursday. DeVos spent about two hours at the Design 39 campus in 4S Ranch, speaking to administrators, teachers, and students. "The questions she was asking kids was, 'Really, tell me about your learning, and what do you really enjoy about learning here? How has this helped you as a learner?'" said Megan Power, a teacher at the school and former Education Department fellow who helped arrange for the visit. DeVos is a polarizing figure in the Trump administration, partially for her stance on school choice. Opponents accuse her of wanting to pull money out of public schools to pay for private education.Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps posted pictures on Facebook after the visit. Some parents blasted the district for even hosting her. One woman said if she had known she would have protested outside. Another called DeVos dangerous to public education.Other parents disagreed, saying politics aside, her visit was an honor."Just the fact that she came here to visit, someone of that high a profile speaks volumes to the school," said Matt Kolker, who was picking up his son from Design 39 campus Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two puppies soon to be up for adoption in San Diego are already capturing hearts around the world.Two 3-month-old terrier-blends, named Star and Denver, were taken to Helen Woodward Animal Center on Feb. 11 after their mother had been dumped in a rural location in Louisiana. They were taken by van about 1,900 miles through a partnership with the rescue group Heart of Louisiana.Once in San Diego, it wasn't long before staff learned about Star's unique challenges and special bond with her brother. Star is blind and deaf and Denver had taken on the role of guide dog for his sister.RELATED: Assemblyman Todd Gloria announces bill to end puppy mills in California"While the rest of [Star's] littermates frolicked without her, her brother Denver kept a protective eye on her," the animal center wrote.
