For the second time in recent weeks, President Donald Trump sent well wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell — a known associate of Jeffrey Epstein, who is currently in jail awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges. In an interview with Axios, which aired on Monday evening, Trump was asked by reporter Jonathan Swan to clarify comments he made during a July 21 press briefing in which he sent well wishes to Maxwell.Trump said he "didn't know" about Maxwell's charges. He added that "her friend or boyfriend" — Epstein — "was killed or committed suicide in jail.""She's now in jail. Yeah, I wish her well," Trump said. "I'd wish a lot of people well. Good luck. Let them prove somebody was guilty." 702

Former Sen. Bob Dole was helped out of his wheelchair Tuesday to salute former President George H.W. Bush as he laid in state at the Capitol Rotunda.Dole, 95, once faced Bush during the 1988 Republican primary fight for the presidential nomination but nonetheless maintained a decades-old friendship with the former president. On Saturday, he reflected on their relationship, telling CNN's Ana Cabrera that his passing was an end of an era, as Bush was the last World War II veteran to serve as president."I believe there are certain qualities that veterans have, and when Bush was president, I think about three-fourths of Congress were veterans and we would stick together and work together across the aisle. And President Bush was a bipartisan president. So we got quite a lot done," Dole said. 804

First it was Hurricane Harvey, then Irma. And in the end, millions of people desperately need help.If you weren't directly affected and would like to chip in, the good news is that many companies will let you double your donation. How to extend your giftThe American Red Cross has become the go to charity for victims of both hurricanes. And it has partnered with a number of big corporations, who are promising to match your gift, giving it double and even triple the impact. If you are in Walmart or Sam's Club in the coming days, look for signs at cash registers explaining how to donate and get their match, through Saturday, Sept. 16. Walmart has promised to match donations two-to-one with cash or products. You can do it in store, or at Walmart's website. Also, many employers are doubling their workers donations.Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and AT&T are among those who have been matching employee gifts, some two-to-one. Be sure to check with your specific employer to see if they're offering a similar initiative.Beware of donation scam emailsBut be cautious of scammers who want to take your donations.Watch out for email phishing scams claiming to be from the Red Cross and other charities, asking you to donate. Several federal agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, are warning consumers to be wary of bogus emails related to the hurricanes. You should know that scammers may use names that are similar to reputable charities. Those copycats may misspell the organization's name or make a subtle tweak, hoping you don't notice. The federal agencies also say you should avoid cash donations when possible, and never write checks to individuals claiming to be victims. If you are not sure about a charity, especially one that calls or emails you, do not agree to help them out.First, look them up online at guidestar.org, give.org, or the Better Business Bureau, and check them out, so you don't waste your money._________________Don't Waste Your Money” is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. FLORIDA — A man in a photo of three police officers that went viral after they posted it during Hurricane Irma relief is being investigated for anti-Semitic comments.Jokes published on the account of Officer Michael Hammill were found, and a complaint filed with the Gainesville, Florida Police Department. According to Gainesville.com, one reads:“What’s the difference between boy scouts and Jews?” Anybody know? Well it is because “Boy scouts come back from their camps.” 496

Fresh off his victory in the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary, Rep. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that voters would "monkey this up" if they elected his African-American opponent, Andrew Gillum, to be governor, immediately drawing accusations of racism. The remark provides a controversial beginning to what will be a closely watched general election for the Florida governorship, which pits DeSantis, who has closely aligned himself with President Donald Trump, against Gillum, a progressive backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders.Calling him "an articulate spokesman" for the far left, DeSantis said during an interview on Fox News when asked about his opponent Gillum, "The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state."Gillum would become the state's first black governor if he were to win in November. Democrats quickly accused DeSantis of using racist dog whistles, which DeSantis' campaign denied."It's disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles," Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo said in a statement, which was cited by the Gillum campaign when asked for a response."On the first day of the general election, Ron DeSantis showed Floridians who he really is," Democratic Governors Association Deputy Communications Director David Turner said. "Resorting to dog whistle politics within hours of winning the GOP nomination shows a desperate candidate who will stoop to new lows in order to court and give voice to fringe elements of society. Floridians want a leader who will bring them together; Ron DeSantis has shown that he would only divide Florida."A spokeswoman for Fox News reached out to CNN early Wednesday afternoon to distance the network from DeSantis' remark, saying, "We do not condone this language and wanted to make our viewers aware that he has since clarified his statement."Stephen Lawson, the communications director for the DeSantis campaign, said he was referring to Gillum's policies in making the remark."Ron DeSantis was obviously talking about Florida not making the wrong decision to embrace the socialist policies that Andrew Gillum espouses. To characterize it as anything else is absurd," Lawson said. "Florida's economy has been on the move for the last eight years and the last thing we need is a far-left democrat trying to stop our success."The-CNN-Wire 2459
