SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local wildlife researcher is being remembered after he died Thursday at a remote canyon in San Pasqual Valley.David Bittner, 75, of Julian, died what he loved doing. He was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras in the Brady Canyon area, when he fell at least 50 feet. For decades, Bittner led a free "hawk watch" on Saturdays during the first two months of the year, where biologists would teach the community about birds and their relationship to raptors.Begent said the wildlife expert helped educate thousands on the importance of wildlife preservation, even purchasing 3,000 acres and gifting it to the county as a wildlife preserve, according to Begent."His life was dedicated fully to his love of wildlife and wild places, helping educate thousands on the balance of preservation and healthy appreciation of wildlife while protecting their habitat first and foremost," said Katie Quint, who worked closely with Bittner.Thursday, Bittner was replacing batteries near the location of a threatened Golden Eagle's nest, according to Quint. "Dave has been advocating for San Diego County’s Golden Eagle population with local agencies by ensuring the long-term documentation of their nesting ecology over the past 31 years," said Quint.Saturday, a special tribute is planned for Bittner from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Begent Ranch in Ramona, the area where he connected so many to his love of wildlife. 2210

And for one reason or another they're just stumped," says Stephen Zolezzi, the President and CEO of the Food and Beverage Association of San Diego.His association tracks the total number of licenses given out in San Diego to food and beverage vendors. Zolezzi says over the last three years, there's been an increase of 300 licenses. The prices of rent, insurance, and goods have all gone up in the past year. There are also higher labor costs because of minimum wage hikes and low unemployment creating favorable hiring conditions for employees.But cost isn't the only factor."Customer loyalty, today, is really at a low," says Zolezzi. His members say diners now would rather go to multiple places once than become regular, dependable customers at a few spots."You could be doing everything right," he says. Zolezzi says these apps can charge restaurants as much as 30% of the total bill, plus delivery fees, to carry their food. That cuts into already razor-thin margins and in some cases cause restaurants to lose money on each delivery order."If you don't have that factored into your business plan, it could create a negative," he says.Zolezzi says it's now up to the industry to adapt, as restaurant owners need to constantly reinvent their location, menu, and marketing to bring in more customers. 2568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North County school district is fighting off potential threats with cutting-edge technology.On Thursday the school board approved plans to install an electronic access control system on its campus by the 2019-2020 school year. Funding for the 4,000 project will come out of the district's capital facilities fund. The system will provide global lockdown capability through panic buttons, card readers, computer, or mobile device.LED lights will notify teachers if their classroom door is locked, they can also lock them manually or with a key card. Teachers can also unlock the doors from the inside if they need to let a student in.Jeff Kaye, President and CEO of School Safety Operations, assesses how secure schools are and offers recommendations.He commended Rancho Santa Fe for a high baseline for emergency preparedness, but says it can always be improved. “What we see with locks at all schools is the inability to lock a door from inside of classroom without the use of keys. It makes sense because most of these schools were designed before we had this type of threat. Locks were meant to secure the school after school, not to keep something bad out during school," said Kaye.Kaye says during the Parkland, Florida shooting someone was killed opening the door to try and secure the classroom. He recommends all schools invest in electronic locks in some capacity.“Money is a tough commodity in education safety, especially in California. So when we have someone trying to sell Kevlar doors or Kevlar safe rooms or Kevlar backpacks and the school doesn't have doors that can lock, we say it's like building your swimming pool before building your house," said Kaye. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being hit by a car near Liberty Station Tuesday night. According to San Diego Police, the crash happened near Rosecrans Street and Laning Road around 5:17 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a man in his 60s, was crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when the driver of a car turned left and hit the man. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating. 517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Naval officer is making a plea for tips after thieves made off with some priceless military heirlooms.On Tuesday, Gervy Alota's wife called him after she returned to their home on Linbrook Drive."Just completely ransacked my house...my heart sunk," said Alota.Since there were no clear signs of entry, Alota believes the thieves got in through the doggie door in the back of the home.Among the missing items were several dozen collectible Jordan sneakers and about 15 pieces of jewelry, including Alota's class ring from the Naval Academy.  He calls it a symbol of the start of his 20-year Navy career.  A class ring belonging to his wife - also a graduate - was also stolen. 720
