SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reminded residents today to protect themselves against wild rodents after three deer mice were found carrying the potentially deadly hantavirus.Vector Control officials collected the mice in Boulevard during a regular monitoring exercise. Hantavirus occurrences in wild rodents are not uncommon in undeveloped areas of the county, but residents can avoid potentially infected rodents by keeping them out of areas like sheds, garages and homes.Vector Control officials also found five hantavirus-carrying mice in Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero in January.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain. Hantavirus infection is generally unlikely, though, because rodents tend to avoid humans and developed spaces.Residents are advised to use ``wet cleaning'' methods like a bleach solution spray or a sponge and a mop if they find rodent droppings or nests.Sweeping or vacuuming nests and droppings can send the virus into the air, raising the chance of infection. Vector Control officials also advise residents to double-bag and seal rodent debris before throwing it away.Residents can avoid hantavirus exposure by sealing holes that are larger than a dime in homes and adjacent spaces and quickly eliminating rodent debris and infestations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council unanimously voted, 9-0, Tuesday to invest more than million in homelessness services and programs designed to curb the city's homeless population.The .1 million allocation of state funding comes from the Homeless Emergency Aid Program, a 0 million block grant designed to help address homelessness throughout California. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the mayors of the other so-called Big 11 cities secured a total of 0 million in state funding to address homelessness issues in the state's biggest cities.The city will allocate .8 million for homeless services like housing navigation, .2 million for rental assistance and subsidies, .6 million for the continuation of city services and facilities like San Diego's three bridge shelters and 5,000 each for youth programs and administration costs."Thanks to the advocacy by California's largest cities, we can now implement these critical programs to improve our outreach, expand the range and depth of homeless services including prevention and diversion strategies, and bring creative solutions online to move hundreds of homeless San Diegans off the streets and into housing," said District 3 City Councilman Chris Ward.The funds will be used to expand some existing programs while creating new ones, such as a flexible subsidy pool that offers housing assistance to residents who may not qualify for federal housing vouchers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,490 new COVID-19 infections and 14 new deaths, marking 104,958 total cases and 1,151 total deaths.Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,867 cases -- a record -- reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 12th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 27,599 tests reported Saturday, 9% returned positive.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals have 16% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11- county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. This compares to 7.7% and 20%, respectively, one month ago.The county has seen a 199% increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the past 30 days and a 148% increase in ICU patients in the same time frame. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced his office is accepting penalty cancellation requests for homeowners and small business owners who were impacted by COVID-19 and missed the Dec. 10 property tax deadline.Property taxes unpaid after Dec. 10 incurred a 10% penalty. To qualify for penalty cancellation, the property must either be residential and occupied by the homeowner or owned and operated by a taxpayer that qualifies as a small business."COVID-19 has affected many in San Diego -- especially our small businesses, so we want to do what we can to help those who did not have the funds to pay their taxes on time," McAllister said. "We want to be as lenient as we can and show compassion for those who need it."To complete a penalty cancellation request, a taxpayer must:-- complete the request form, print it and sign it-- include copies of printed evidence proving how the taxpayer was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and unable to pay the property taxes by the delinquent date-- include a check for the base amount of the property taxes owed. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit Tuesday promised a thorough investigation into allegations that one of his officers uploaded a social media post mocking a roadside memorial for a robbery suspect fatally shot three months ago by that lawman and a patrol partner.SDPD Officer Jonathon Lucas was immediately suspended without pay after the online image seemingly belittling the death of 25-year-old Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra appeared on Instagram last week, Nisleit told reporters during a mid-afternoon briefing at downtown police headquarters."I am shocked and disturbed by the reports of this officer's conduct," the chief said about the post, in which emojis of laughing and tearfully wailing faces were superimposed over a photo of the makeshift tribute to Ibarra at the site where he was shot."The officer's alleged actions fall short of the high standards I and our community have for the San Diego Police Department," Nisleit said.Late on the afternoon of June 27, Lucas and Officer Tevar Zaki opened fire on Ibarra, a suspect in a recent robbery, when he allegedly pulled a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at them as they approached him in the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue in the Core-Columbia district.Ibarra succumbed to his gunshot wounds in a hospital two days later.The shooting prompted demonstrations by protesters alleging a culture of excessive use of force and racial bias on the part of the San Diego Police Department.While condemning the antagonistic online posting Tuesday afternoon, the police chief offered a message to Ibarra's survivors."I want to apologize to the Ibarra family," Nisleit said.
