For decades, the Del Mar Races have been more than just horses. It's the food, drinks and fashion that San Diegan's spend all year anxiously awaiting."It brings the festivities. Instead of everyone just coming for a race day, it makes the women have a reason to put something pretty on like hats or go all out with a dress," said Deena Von Yokes. For the past 8 years, Deena was a judge for the race's annual hat contest.But as COVID-19 kept fans away this year, she and organizers didn't let the contest take a back seat."Home turf club is what we’re calling it. You can create your own with your 'friend bubble' or 'business bubble' or 'work bubble'. People can still celebrate and have fun."And by celebrate, she wanted everyone to dress up from head to toe."Take a picture of your head to your toes because its about the hat but it’s also the complete look," Deena described.To enter the virtual contest this year, participants had to upload their entire look on social media using the #DelMarHatsContest and tagging the Del Mar Races official account."People who have never done it before can do something crazy so I’m kind of curious to see what happens and to see what people come up with."Everyone proved COVID-19 couldn't stop San Diego."We’re showing how resilient we are all in the spirit of fashion, and in this case, in horse racing because that’s a tradition here and we’re going to keep that alive."Winner will be announced July 11th. For companies hiring right now, ensuring you're hiring the most qualified candidate can be tricky. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way businesses approach hiring and are forcing them to recruit remotely. "Everything we’ve always done previously has been in person. It’s always been encouraged to do in-person, face-to-face communication. From a job seeker's perspective, obviously, it helps to be in-person and kind of take their facial cues and whatnot, so we really had to change everything we were doing," says Erik Cherkaski with the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board. Cherkaski says one of his main jobs is to recruit employees for local businesses. Because of the pandemic, their recruiting services are now virtual. Recently, the organization has been holding virtual job fairs for a number of large employers."I think one day we had logistics, so we had some of our local fulfillment centers on. Another day we had the service industry on, so some of the local retailers that were doing mass hiring [participated]. Then, we had a focus on government, as well. So, some of the local and state organizations that were doing some hiring and we had some very good turnout. This was new territory for us," said Cherkaski.Employers held virtual presentations for candidates who tuned in using online meeting platforms like Zoom and Webex. "It was very engaging. We got good feedback from our employers and we are looking to do it again. So that was very positive for us to see that we can do something like this online," said Cherkaski.College students and recent graduates are also finding their first career move by participating in online events. Handshake, which helps connect more than 500,000 employers with college students looking for a job or internship, says it's expanding it's virtual services to accommodate universities who've put their in-person career fairs on hold."There are a lot of opportunities that do still exist even with the change in the economy this particular year. We have so many students across so many different walks of life that are looking in for those opportunities to be able to just jump start their career," said Christine Cruzvergara, with Handshake. To help, Handshake created a new virtual engagement module."That is going to allow employers to be able to actually segment, campaign and reach out to candidates that meet the different criteria and qualifications that they are looking for, across all of our thousands of universities and colleges. They can go beyond the basic qualifications in a virtual fair to be even more tailored around, for example, some of their DEI requirements or their goals," said Cruzvergara.Handshake hopes the new tools not only help employers narrow down the types of students they want to hire, but also helps students. "It's going to allow students to maximize the time they do have in between classes or in-between their part time jobs or things they might be doing other responsibilities or obligations they have," said Cruzvergara.As for how long Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board will be holding their recruiting events virtually, Cherkaski said, "if you were to have asked me this four months ago I would have said, Oh this isn’t going to go on too long but now we're four months in and I suspect were going to be doing this for the foreseeable future."Both Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board and Handshake believe even when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted completely, employers will still want to use virtual recruiting events to widen their candidate search.Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Christine Cruzvergara's last name. 3693
FREDERICK, Colorado – The bodies of Chris Watts’ two young daughters were found inside oil and gas tanks that “were mostly full,” several high-ranking sources tell Scripps' Denver affiliate KMGH-TV.The high ranking sources said Thursday evening they believe Watts placed the bodies of 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste in the oil and gas tanks owned by Anadarko in order to hide the bodies and conceal the smell.Frederick police officials said in a 6:30 p.m. update Thursday that the bodies of the two young girls were found in close proximity to the other body whom officers strongly believe is Shanann Watts. Her body was found on property owned by Anadarko Petroleum earlier Thursday. Investigators have not yet confirmed the location of the bodies. The husband and father was taken to jail at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after he was detained for questioning. Two law enforcement sources said Watts had confessed to killing his wife and daughters. He faces investigation on one count of first-degree murder after deliberation; two counts of first-degree murder – position of trust; and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body.All three were reported missing Monday around 2 p.m. after Shanann did not arrive to a scheduled meeting. In addition to having two daughters, Shanann was also 15 weeks pregnant. The FBI and CBI were brought in to help Frederick police in the investigation.Weld County prosecutors said they believe Shanann and the girls were killed inside of the family’s home but did not say why they believe that.There is a candlelight vigil in front of the Watts home scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday. 1986
Food insecurity has skyrocketed in communities across the country during the pandemic. Rural communities have been hit especially hard. In Louisiana, which the highest-ranked state for food insecurity for children and the fourth-ranked state in food insecurity for seniors, food banks are becoming more important than ever before.For grandmother Mary O'Neal, she's raising her 8-year-old grandson on her own. Without help from her local food bank, she said she doesn't know how they would get by.Her husband passed away a couple of years ago, which cut their fixed income in half. Since then, O'Neal said she's really had to save."I had to pick up, and we had to start doing things different," said O'Neal. That loss was made worse when a tornado ripped through their northeast Louisiana home."I said, 'You know, Lord, you’ve sent me through the biggest storm of my life. This is just another storm. You brought me through the other one, and you’re going to bring me through this one,'" she said.But O'Neal said she never imagined the storm coronavirus would bring right into her kitchen. Food was running short—not only for her, but for her diabetic grandson, so she visited The Care and Hope Ministry, a small church turned community food bank, for some help."For us, it’s more than just than a box of food," said Pam Walker, who runs the food distribution. "It’s relationships, it’s loving on people, it’s hope, hope in a time of despair."Hope is just what O'Neal needed, especially after her grandson's school, and several in the area, stopped sending home-packed lunches while students were doing remote learning."That was all cut out the last of June. They didn’t give any more lunches," said O'Neal. Those programs running dry made mealtime that much tougher on O'Neal and so many others."Our school system is a completely Title 1 school system, so every child in our school system gets free lunch," said Walker.Poverty is high across most of Louisiana and in many rural communities across the country, contributing greatly to food insecurity. 2059
Following the same path as the ill-fated Titanic voyage of 1912, a cruise ship named Titanic II will hit the open sea in 2022.According to a report from USA Today, Blue Star Line's ship features the same cabin layout as the original ship and will carry the same amount of passengers (2400) and crew (900).The ship will sail from Dubai to Southampton, England and then to New York, following the same route the original ship took before it sank on April 12, 1912.Despite being a replica of the original, the Titanic II features modern navigation technology. The modern ship will also be slightly wider than the original to give it more stability.
