WASHINGTON (AP) — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed as investigators moved in to arrest him. That's according to a senior Justice Department official who spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday. The man, Michael Reinoehl, was killed as a federal task force attempted to apprehend him in Lacey, Washington. The official says Reinoehl was the prime suspect in the killing of 39-year-old Aaron “Jay” Danielson, who was shot in the chest Saturday night. 537

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — A man has been arrested and charged after police say he threw his wife into the Provo River in Utah on Sunday.According to an arrest report, 61-year-old Douglas Harold Green and his wife were at the Provo River Resort, located just downriver from Deer Creek State Park in Wasatch County, when they began arguing over dinner arrangements.Police say Green became angry and threatened to drown her in the river. He then dragged her to the bank of the Provo River and forced her in, the probable cause statement says.Witnesses said they tried to help her, but Green yelled at them to stay away.Police said the woman had a bruise on each arm, which she said were from Green dragging her. It was not made clear if she sustained further injuries, how long she was in the river or how she got out.Green was arrested and held without bail after a judge in the Heber District Court ruled that releasing him "would constitute a substantial danger to an alleged victim of domestic violence."He has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, a third-degree felony, and assault, a class-B misdemeanor. This story was originally published by Spencer Burt at KSTU. 1176

WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting in lawsuits involving absentee ballot deadlines in three battleground states, the Supreme Court has allowed extensions for ballots in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to remain in place. But it has refused a plea for a relaxed deadline in Wisconsin. In each case, Democrats backed the extensions, and Republicans opposed them. All three states have Democratic governors and legislatures controlled by the GOP.Last week, the Supreme Court tied 4-4 by upholding the ruling from Pennsylvania's Supreme Court that would allow election officials to receive and count ballots until Nov. 6, even if they don't have a clear postmark. On Wednesday, the justices denied the motion to expedite a review of the state's Republican Party's appeal to exclude mail-in absentee ballots after the elections were over."There is simply not enough time at this late date to decide the question before the election," Justice Samuel Alito said in a statement alongside Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch. "That does not mean, however, that the state court decision must escape our review."Alito added that state officials informed county election boards to segregate ballots received between 8 p.m. on Election Day and 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.At first blush, the different outcomes at the Supreme Court seem odd because the high court typically takes up issues to harmonize the rules across the country. On Wednesday, the justices said absentee ballots in North Carolina could be received and counted up to nine days after Election Day.On Monday, the justices stated that ballots in Wisconsin must be received by Election Day in order to be counted, the Associated Press reported. But elections are largely governed by states, and the rules differ from one state to the next.Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate in consideration of either motion, the justices said. 1877

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Fallbrook woman was convicted of negligence for killing a father of four off of Highway 395 near the Pala Mesa Resort on May 23, 2017.Sulem Garcia was on prescription medications when she veered off the road crashing into Paul Burke who was on his bicycle, blocks from his home. Garcia's lawyer argued she was exhausted from finishing her finals at Palomar College that day and had been on the prescription medications to treat depression for three years.Garcia received the maximum sentence which was 1-year behind bars. More than 60 of Burke's family members and friends were in the courtroom. Burke's wife Laura gave a victim impact statement saying she does not believe that Garcia is remorseful and that the sentencing was a slap on the wrist.Burke owned and operated a custom surf shop for more than 40 years. He also worked at Costco. Burke's daughter and son both spoke at the sentencing hearing. 938
