SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died after an SUV veered off a freeway in the National City area and crash landed in the Sweetwater River Friday morning. The California Highway Patrol said the incident involving a Lexus SUV was reported just before 5:40 a.m. on the westbound side of state Route 54, near the transition to Interstate 5.ABC 10News learned a woman was walking on a bike path along the Sweetwater River when she saw a vehicle come off the freeway and down an embankment. The woman told authorities that the SUV almost hit her and then crashed in the water.Authorities at the scene confirmed that a man believed to be the driver was pulled from the water but died despite life-saving measures at the scene. The CHP identified the man as a 69-year-old Chula Vista resident.A team of divers was sent into the water to determine if more people were in the SUV, but no other victims were located. The CHP later confirmed the deceased male was the SUV's lone occupant.A tow truck helped pull the vehicle from the water. The cause of the crash is under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact local authorities. 1158

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new monolith was supposed to be unveiled at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on Wednesday, but it was found destroyed hours before the introduction ceremony.Several weeks ago, a mysterious monolith appeared at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace, attracting crowds and raising questions like where it came from and who put it there. However, several days later, the monolith was removed by a group of teenagers. The theft of the monolith was disappointing for many, including Nutmeg Bakery & Café co-owner Drew Hoffus. He told ABC 10News that his business not only had a first-class view of the monolith, but it helped bring in customers.“This year has been a challenge for everyone … The landmarks helped us out a lot. Our business was struggling this year,” Hoffus said.RELATED STORIES:Mysterious monolith removed from San Diego parking lotMonolith appears at San Diego County shopping centerOther people ABC 10News spoke to said it was unofficially named the “monolith of hope” because visitors and residents would touch it and take pictures with it, but it also brought them a sense of joy. After the group of teens stole the monolith, management at the shopping center decided to replace it.The unveiling was set for Wednesday morning, but overnight, the structure was wrecked.“The plaque we had made speaks to dedicating the monolith to the community, to the local businesses that helped us get through this crazy year. For someone to tear it town, before it’s unveiled, it’s a little frustrating, almost sickening …,” said Hoffus.Police are looking into surveillance footage as part their investigation.Anyone with information on this incident is asked to come forward. 1700

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego insurance agent who cheated 15 victims out of nearly .5 million was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in prison.Shawn Heffernan, 43, pleaded guilty in February to 29 felony counts of fraud and other charges, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.Heffernan would often convince clients to surrender existing life insurance policies and purchase new ones. The practice, known as “churning” or “twisting”, led to hefty commissions for Heffernan and steep penalties for clients, prosecutors said. Heffernan also collected investment funds and spent them on personal items including a Maserati, jewelry, and a lavish wedding, according to the District Attorney. Eight of Heffernan’s victims were senior citizens.“Stealing money from investors, and defrauding them out of their hard-earned savings, especially when some of the victims are senior citizens, is disgraceful and will not be tolerated,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said.  1011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new movie set in San Diego and south of the border is hoping to bridge the cultural gap between the two countries, all using comedy. The movie highlights the bi-cultural relationship between San Diego and Mexico. Ruta Madre first premiered in 2017 and has since made its way around the film festival circuit winning various awards. Now, the movie is getting some major attention and even making its way to theatres around San Diego. Although Ruta Madre has had a successful turn around the film festival circuit, the theatrical release comes at a critical time in the political relationship between the U.S. and Mexico. It also confronts the issue many Latinos in America face: self- and social-identity."It reflects the feeling of many Latinos, especially Mexicans, who have emigrated or were born here, but who have not they feel neither from here nor from there,” director and screenwriter Agustín Casta?eda said in a 2016 interview. The film, called Ruta Madre, follows Daniel, a young American singer who leaves his home in Chula Vista to embark on a spiritual road trip after his first love Daisy breaks his heart. The film follows Daniel and his uncle as they travel through the Baja peninsula where he meets a colorful cast of characters that combine comedy and tenderness to help the teen discover his Mexican heritage.Across a stunning backdrop of Mexico's vibrant landscape and rich culture, the film paints a proud image of people from both sides of the border. "Ruta Madre conveys a strong message of love, family and is a celebration of the culture that will delight the public of each nationality, regardless of the border side they call home," said Casta?edaWatch 10News tomorrow at 6 a.m. to find out about other ties Ruta Madre has to San Diego. 1795
