He was a former cop with a little-known story of infiltrating the KKK back in the 1970’s, until an Oscar-winning film thrust him into the national spot light.Now, Ron Stallworth’s story is known to many. “I never imagined anything like this happening when I began this, writing this book,” Stallworth says. “I just want to tell a story.”And Stallworth’s real life meets today's real life. The movie BlacKkKlansman ends with real footage from the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as President Donald Trump’s comments afterwards, saying there were “very find people on both sides.” Stallworth believes the president's words are, in part, why his story still resonates so much today. “He had an opportunity to be the moral conscience of this country in that precise defined moment, and he chose to equate hate with non-violent protesters,” Stallworth says. Stallworth views today's alt-right protesters in the same light as KKK members of decades past. “The alt-right doesn't sport white hoods and white sheets. They wear suit coats. They look like business people,” he says. “They don't have the stereotypical image of the southern racists that many of us grew up grew up on in the movie.” That's why he believes diversity in law enforcement, and connection with the community, is more important now than ever. “If you have a systemic evil in an organization like racism, one of the best ways to fight it is to become part of the organization fight it from within,” Stallworth says. “And that's what I was doing back at back in the day. Chris Hopkinson wanted to challenge himself, so he came up with a plan to paddle board the Chesapeake Bay. The whole Bay!"The physical mission was to paddle the bay; the real goal is to raise money for Oyster Recovery Partnership," he said.That goal of paddling 200 miles in 9 days was a daunting task."It's like a marathon everyday," he said.So with a goal of 20 to 30 miles a day, Hopkins took off from the Havre De Grace and headed down the bay to the Atlantic Ocean. He grew up around the bay but got a better understanding of it's beauty."When I'm coming down the Honga River and there's nobody around and there's just water and green and untouched beauty, you really get an appreciation for the beauty of the bay."Hopkinson knew this was going to be quite a physical challenge but Mother Nature decided to make it a little more interesting."Pretty high winds, 10 to 15 knots, which was creating some pretty good wave, 2 to 3 feet and then we had much cooler than normal temperatures."And that was the first day. Chris knew out of 9 days, not all were going to be good, but taking a punch in the face on the first day had him rethinking this adventure. He was motivated from those following his journey."I mean, I got hundreds of text messages and social media posts and emails from people just saying how much they were behind me and how excited they were. I think everybody really liked having a break from all the really bad news to follow something really good."So, on the 7th day he had heavy winds blowing from the side and head on and high waves and had to stop, his shortest day yet, 17 miles... 3 miles shy of goal for the day."I just couldn't take it."So, with that challenge from Mother Nature, what does he do the next day?"I took that day personally and the next day we had our best day which was 36 miles."And then just one day left, off he goes with a little encouragement from his wife, Megan.And he did get it done. "It's about time the country has a real conversation about human trafficking, which is modern day slavery in our midst,” said Dave Aronberg, state attorney for Palm Beach County, in a recent presser. “This is not about lonely old men or victimless crimes.” Amanda Finger, the executive director of the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking, says unfortunately, this isn't the only type of trafficking they've seen. “You also see cases that involve tourism industry that involve people in the western slope, who are forced into farm work ranchers,” Finger says. Many organizations consider human trafficking the world's fastest growing crime. The most common form is sex trafficking, and the industry pulls in an estimated billion each year. According to the United Nations, most of the victims are women and girls. Finger says any community can be impacted, so she helps people and organizations recognize red flags, like poor living conditions and ways people spend money. “If they ever talk about needing to give it back to someone else, someone else is controlling their money, someone else is controlling their documentation and they don't have their ID on them,” Finger says of signs someone may be a victim. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The former Minneapolis police officer seen kneeling on George Floyd’s neck before his death has now been charged with the man's murder. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday afternoon that ex-officer Derek Chauvin has been taken into custody and charged with 3rd degree murder, as well as manslaughter.Watch Freeman announce the charges against Chauvin in the press conference below:Chauvin is one of four officers who have been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department for their alleged role in Floyd’s death. Freeman said he expects charges to be filed against the other officers as well, but his team felt it was "appropriate to focus on the most dangerous perpetrator." Chauvin’s arrest comes less than a day after Freeman and other officials asked the public to give them time to make a charging decision in the case. During the Thursday press conference, Freeman actually told reporters, “There is other evidence that doesn’t support a criminal charge.” Now, Freeman says his team has enough evidence to charge.“We have now been able to put together the evidence that we need. Even as late as yesterday afternoon, we didn’t have all that we needed. Handmade tortillas and rice and beans are all ingredients in some of Silvia Hernandez' most beloved meals. “I'm from Mexico City, so I love tacos,” she says. “My favorite dish is the carne asada taco.” Hernandez is an immigrant and came to the U.S. a few years ago. She knew how to cook, but she wanted to turn her passion and skill and wanted to turn her traditional Mexican cooking into a business. But she had no idea where to even start.“I didn't know anything about, you know, [the] process, license, requirements,” she says. “I did not even know where offices are located.” That’s where Slavitca Park came in. Park created the Comal Heritage Food Incubator as an outreach program. It’s for low-income immigrants, who needed help to start food businesses based around the cuisines of their homelands. “Everything from understanding, how do you build a menu, how do you source food, how do you price it, what kind of licensing, permitting, you need financing,” Park explains of the education the program provides. The incubator, which acts as a learning kitchen of sorts, is packed five days a week. Here, the women create their own dishes and train with professional chefs. The program now includes refugees from Syria and Ethiopia. “I always say food is one of those things that absolutely transcends everything,” Park says. “I just really think that food is the vehicle that builds the community. Breaking breads. That's what it’s all about.” Hernandez completed the program and now has her own catering company. But she says she just can’t stay away from the program. She still works a couple shifts a week in the incubator. Park loves hearing the stories of those who complete the program."What comes out of it, it’s nothing short of pure magic,” she says. 1783
