SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A community vigil to honor last week's El Paso shooting victims is set for 7 p.m. Sunday in Balboa Park, organizers said Saturday."We wanted to express our grief and be there for the community," Jessica Yanez Perez, a vigil organizer, said. "As a border city with strong Latino heritage, we stand with El Paso and grieve with them."The two-hour event will be held outside the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and will feature community speakers, a prayer vigil and biographies of the 22 victims of Aug. 3's mass shooting, Perez said."This event is an opportunity to bring the community together as we mourn, remember and hopefully, in time, heal," Perez said. "It's our shared responsibility to speak out against white supremacy and intolerance, and to build an America where all of us are safe."A traditional mariachi band will perform at the vigil, she said. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island in California to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. The "van life movement" has made a mark on social media. The hashtag #VanLife has been used more than 4 million times. Even though the movement is growing in popularity, sleeping in your vehicle on city streets in San Diego isn’t allowed. Those who do it are willing to risk a ticket or have to move around from location to location. Currently, there is a lawsuit filed against the city of San Diego pushing for a lift on the ban against people living in their vehicles and parking on city streets for long hours. (AP) — Jury deliberations have resumed in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors last Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt. The jury was off Friday and deliberations started again Monday.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account.If Merritt is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. 869

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. SAN DIEGO — Todd Brown doesn’t hold back when he talks about the impact Coronavirus restrictions have made on his bottom line.“It’s been basically devastating to us,” he said.Brown owns multiple restaurants in San Diego - including Bub’s in Pacific Beach. This past Fourth of July weekend was not what he was hoping for.“With the holiday weekend, our numbers, they were tremendously disappointing,” Brown said.It's going to get worse before it gets better.That's because Brown is going to have to shut down his indoor service for three weeks,Along with a variety of other business owners in the county.The county made the Governor’s monitoring list for three days in a row, meaning restrictions are going into effect at restaurants, tasting rooms, breweries, entertainment centers, zoos, theaters and card rooms for the next three weeks.“I say we are going back instead of forward,” said Patrizia Branchi, who owns Operacaffe downtown.Branchi said business has really suffered during the pandemic - with sales down to 35 percent.These new restrictions still allow her to serve customers outside - but with social distancing rules, her patio only holds six people.“I don’t want to think about closing because to me that means my family is going to have a problem,” Branchi said. “I have me and my daughter, and the other partner, which is with us since ever.
