SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Air & Space Museum will hold an induction ceremony for its Air & Space Hall of Fame 2019 class Saturday, which includes Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.In addition to Bezos, the 2019 class includes former Lockheed Martin Corporation Chairman Vance Coffman, MedAire founder Joan Sullivan Garrett, Apollo 12 command module pilot Dick Gordon, D-Day Pathfinder pilot Lt. Col. David Hamilton, Boeing Company aerodynamicist and aerospace engineer Robert Liebeck and Robert Gilliland, the first man to fly the SR-71 Blackbird.The museum launched the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1963 to honor pilots, inventors, engineers, space explorers and more who have made important contributions in the fields of Earth and space flight. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will begin a pilot program Tuesday to reduce fines and allow fare violators new options for clearing their citations.Passengers will still be required to have a valid fare while riding, but any citations MTS issues on or after Sept. 1 will qualify under the new program guidelines."Our goal is to be flexible in our fare enforcement efforts so that riders have an opportunity to purchase a fare or to correct their fine without a criminal process," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS board chair and San Diego County supervisor. "Bringing the citation payment process in-house to MTS rather than straight to the courts will help our passengers avoid burdensome court fees. But more importantly, it will allow MTS staff to educate passengers on what payment options are available."The MTS board approved the diversionary program on June 18 after criticism rose during the pandemic that the transit authority was saddling poorer people with unfair burdens. MTS has reported for several years that it has a fare evasion rate of 3%, but system staff estimate that MTS will lose close to million annually for every percentage point that rate goes up.The Fare Enforcement Diversion Program will offer:-- Reduced fines/more payment locations: Citations will be reduced to . A person will have 120 days to pay the fine to MTS in-person or by mail-- Community service option: An option of providing three hours of community service in lieu of payment will also be included in the new policy. Community service can be done through the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank or a Homeless Court Program Provider such as Father Joe's Villages. According to Fletcher, MTS is currently working to add more community service locations during the pilot period-- Limited appeal window: Passengers will also have the option of appealing the fare violation within 15 days of the citation if they can demonstrate they have been wrongly ticketed. An example provided is not having a fare due to a malfunctioning ticket vending machine-- Civil Process: During the pilot, only citations that are not paid within 120 days will proceed to the courts, where substantial fees may be added to the fines -- 7.50 or more, according to MTSPre-COVID-19, around 33% of the MTS annual budget, or around 0 million, relied on fare revenue.People who board MTS trolleys or buses without a fare will be given an opportunity to deboard and purchase a fare.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 3,493 COVID-19 infections as of Saturday and no new deaths, bringing the county's total to 126,465 cases and the death toll remaining at 1,280.Prior to Sunday's report, a record 3,611 COVID-19 infections were reported Friday. The cases surpassed the previous record set one week ago -- 2,867 last Friday -- by 744 new cases.Saturday's total marks the second time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 as well as the 19th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases and the 12th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The top four-highest daily cases have all occurred in the past week, with Wednesday's 2,807 cases, Thursday's 2,604, Friday's 3,611, and Saturday's 3,493.The county on Sunday reported 1,264 hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients and an additional 320 COVID-19 patients in ICUs.There were seven new outbreaks reported, which brings the total number of outbreaks within the last seven days to 40.On Friday, an appeals court stayed a judge's decision to halt enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions against San Diego County restaurants, meaning eateries must again abide by the state's regional stay-at-home order, at least for now.Lawyers for the state filed the emergency challenge to San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State's scheduled football game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program.The Mountain West Conference is declaring the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday.The Aztecs (3-2), who were coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday, will now hold onto the Old Oil Can trophy for another year after beating Fresno State, 17-7, last season in San Diego.The Bulldogs (3-1) had their planned game Saturday against San Jose State canceled on Friday, also due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs program."We are disappointed about the game on Friday being canceled due to COVID issues but the health and safety of our student-athletes is most important," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "We will actively search for a game this weekend because our coaches, student-athletes and staff want to play."We have reached out to the conference office and the Pac-12 that we are actively looking for a game.
