SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon. On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. "When people come up to me and tell me their stories, to me their stories seem more mind-blowing than my own," Sewell added. 2009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was hit by a car in Normal Heights says she’s been left stranded for six months after her wheelchair was damaged in the crash. Now, replacing it is a challenge. Pet photographer Tamandra Michaels’ love for the camera came to a pause after she was hit from behind while crossing the street.“It sent me flying," Michaels said. The wreck damaged her custom wheelchair, which cost more than ,000.“It slightly bent the frame to where one of the front wheels don’t quite hit the ground.” Michaels says Geico, the insurance company of the woman who hit her, won’t replace the wheelchair after giving them proof the chair must be replaced.“Months went by, they said they did some research and that the chair should only cost between ,500 to ,100," said Michaels. Michaels says without being able to work, she can’t afford to pay the difference.“It's incredibly frustrating. They’re treating it like its a car or maybe even a bike. This is like my legs; this is my life. I don’t understand why they don’t get that."Michaels says she is now seeking help from an attorney. 10News reached out to Geico’s claim department, but they said they could not release any details about the claim.  1251

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A scary looking fish with dagger-like teeth was discovered Wednesday on the shores of Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. The four-foot-long fish isn't something people usually find while fishing off a local pier or even walking along the coast. And before imaginations run wild, it isn't a monster — well, not quite. The fish is a lancetfish, which typically call the dark depths of the ocean home. There, the fish feed on jellyfish, micro plastic, tiny deepwater organisms, and even smaller lancetfish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).RELATED: Rattlesnake season officially begins in Southern California(There's the monster aspect.)With sharp fangs and prehistoric spikes, the fish appears to look like an ancient creature from the time of dinosaurs. That may or may not be the case. Not a lot is known about the mysterious fish, according to NOAA, save for information on their diets and places they call home. And despite their place in the ocean's depths, fisherman may sometimes catch more lancetfish than tuna or mahi. NOAA says the fish is actually the most common bycatch in their fisheries, besides blue sharks. You may not want to try grilling up the fish either. NOAA says lancetfish are, "not very tasty and their gelatinous flesh is unsuited for local cuisine." 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transit security officer stabbed a man who tried to grab his service pistol at the Old Town Transit Center Friday, San Diego Police said. The encounter was reported at 1 p.m. at the station at 4009 Taylor St. Police said the armed officer was attacked by a man who “violently pulled” on the gun in the holster in an attempt to remove it. The officer kept his weapon and defended himself with his duty knife, stabbing the man in the torso, according to police. Despite his injury, the unidentified man ran away. He was later found under a nearby bridge and taken into custody, police said. The security officer had minor injuries to his face from being punched. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sudden avalanche Friday buried five guests at a Northern California ski resort, including a San Diego native and his wife.Evan Huck and his wife, Kahlynn, were among the five skiers and boarders rescued after an avalanche buried a portion of Squaw Valley Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe. Huck grew up on Coronado, his parents told 10News, and had recently married Kahlynn. The pair escaped unscathed, though hectic moments caught on video after the incident show the drastic effort to make sure things didn't end worse.10News?live?weather conditionsKahlynn and others were captured afterward frantically digging Huck out of the mountain of snow, whose beard was the only part of him peeking through.  While Huck was reportedly knocked unconscious, he was able to snowboard down the mountain on his own afterward. It took about 5 minutes to dig him out.Two of the five caught in the sudden avalanche were injured, one with a serious lower-body injury, according to Placer County Sheriff's Department. Everyone involved is believed to have been accounted for, deputies said.RELATED: Avalanche closes Mammoth Mountain ski resort, partially buries 3Squaw Valley was closed Saturday as officials investigate what triggered the avalanche.A winter storm moving across Northern California this week has blanketed the state's mountains in heavy snow. An avalanche also hit Mammoth Mountain Saturday, partially burying three people. They were able to free themselves. No other injuries were reported but the mountain was closed afterward.Earlier this week, deputies reported the body of missing snowboarder Wenyu Zhang, 42, was found at the base of Squaw Valley.
