Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. This morning my husband made me coffee and I thought about my brand new coffee maker I got for Christmas. I get camping coffee to drink now, I don't think it's really set in." 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza visited San Diego to check on America's investment in small businesses."Being here in San Diego and very vibrant market and thousands and thousands of small businesses benefited from the Paycheck Protection Program," Carranza said.One of those businesses is VetPowered and their non-profit Workshops for Warriors, which trains veterans in manufacturing. The company launched in 2008.More than 750 veterans have graduated and 95% of them have been placed in permanent jobs. "The SBA funding we received was a lifeline had we not received that funding we would have had to shut down operations and all the students that were here most of them would become homeless so thanks to these loans not only were we able to continue operations we’ve had two COVID graduations we’ve been able to put almost 100 graduates that I’ve been trained and certified in advanced manufacturing skills into the workforce and I am so thankful for their support," Hernán Luis y Prado, Founder and CEO of VetPowered and Workshops for Warriors.Carranza said negotiations for another round of PPP has been in negotiations for more than two months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say their recruitment numbers are up, in part due to their innovative recruitment strategies.In a presentation at the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, data showed they've hired more people in 2018 compared to 2017 and 2016. "We had 63 candidates that applied for there and are in the academy, that was the largest, highest number academy we've had in 25+ years," Lt. Steve Waldheim, with SDPD's Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit said.So far this year, the department's hired 94 total officers, 15% are women.Here's the breakdown:2016: 3,229 took written exam, 137 hired2017: 3,184 took written exam, 126 hired2018: 2690 took written exam, 198 hiredWaldheim said their recruitment officers are doing a better job selecting applicants and preparing them for the hiring process, creating a lower drop off rate."The more officers we put on the street, the safer it is for the community, the faster response times we have," Waldheim said they need to fill 175 vacant positions, and to do so, they've gotten creative.Those innovative ways include everything from going to schools, military bases, Comic Con, working with the Padres to advertise and getting on social media."One of the biggest challenges is our unemployment rate," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several grocery stores are implementing special shopping hours to make sure those most vulnerable to the coronavirus pandemic get supplies without worry.Target, Whole Foods, Albertsons, and others have started opening an hour early to certain groups so they can shop without stress.Here's a list of where those at-risk populations can shop before the general public:COSTCO: Will open special hours for those 60 and up effective on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 a.m. No guests will be admitted.Target: Opening each Wednesday to "vulnerable guests," including the elderly and those with underlying health concerns, an hour early.Walmart: Walmart will offer hour-long senior shopping every Tuesday from March 24 through April 28, for customers aged 60 and older. This will start one hour before the store opens, so check location hours before going.
