SANTA ANA (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and veered into oncoming traffic while making a turn, slamming head-on into a minivan and killing a mother of three in Lake Forest, was convicted today of second-degree murder.William Joseph Carroll, 51, of Mission Viejo, had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.23 -- nearly three times the legal limit -- when his Ford F- 250 pickup truck slammed into a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by 36-year-old Ana Martinez about 11:40 p.m. May 7, 2013, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Feldman told jurors during the trial.Martinez, who was driving to work at the time, was "crushed to death" in the crash, Feldman said.The prosecutor said Carroll was making a left turn from El Toro Road to Santa Margarita Parkway in Lake Forest when he veered into oncoming traffic.A witness told investigators that Carroll ran a red light, he said. Witnesses "describe Mr. Carroll's truck like a train out of nowhere," Feldman said, adding that the force of the collision was like "100 mph" when combining the speeds of both vehicles.Carroll's attorney, Sara Ross, told jurors it was " a case of government overreach." Ross acknowledged that Carroll was "responsible for the killing of Ana Martinez, but he's not guilty of murder."Both drivers attempted to avoid each other, she said, adding that the intersection is "a bit confusing." "It's a very confusing road and you're going to need that context to determine whether this was a murder," Ross told jurors.Feldman said Carroll was charged with second-degree murder rather than vehicular manslaughter because when he was convicted of DUI on Sept. 11, 2008, he was warned he would be charged with murder in the event of involvement in a DUI-related death.Carroll faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 19. 1797

(KGTV) — A dream trip to Africa for a Santee grandmother turned into a nightmare as she sat in a tour bus.Daughter-in-law Tomira Baca-Craig says Jeanette Craig, who retired four years ago, left for South Africa two weeks ago. Jeanette had been saving for the trip for more than a year.  It was her first trip to Africa.A few days after she arrived, she was on a tour bus headed to an animal preserve in the landlocked country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring more than 12 tourists on board, including Jeanette."Because she had her seatbelt on, she wasn't thrown. She was trapped upside down. When the bus rolled, that's when she sustained all her injuries," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette was transported by helicopter to a clinic just outside Lesotho. She has since undergone several surgeries, suffering a fractured pelvis and leg, and torn ligaments in her legs."Now her pain is just shocking. There's a ton of breakthrough pain every time she shifts because the pelvis is bone on bone," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette is comforted by her daughter, who just arrived in South Africa. Loved ones say they just want to bring her home.  "We'd like to get an MRI and another CT scan to and rule out everything else because it was such a traumatic accident," said Baca-Craig. The problem? Scientists believe they have discovered a new species of whale in Mexico.The team was taking underwater video and audio samples of three beaked whales near Baja California. They work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, about 300 miles from the U.S. border.They originally were looking for what animal was making an unidentified sound recorded in 2018 in the area.Experts in the field of beaked whales now say the scientists’ observations don’t match anything seen before, and they are “highly confident” the video shows an entirely new species, according to a press release.“We saw something new. Something that was not expected in this area, something that doesn’t match, either visually or acoustically, anything that is known to exist,” said Dr. Jay Barlow in a statement from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. “It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible – finding a large mammal that exists on this earth that is totally unknown to science.”Scientists are now using genetic sampling to confirm what the scientists found is really a new kind of beaked whale.The discovery of a new species of beaked whale proves how much mystery there is left to discover in the oceans that our captains, crews, and research partners fight to defend,” said Peter Hammarstedt, Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd. 1442

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A 23-year-old man is behind bars after leading San Diego Sheriff's deputies on a short pursuit in a vehicle that was reported stolen.Deputies received a broadcast from Carlsbad Police of a stolen vehicle on Sunday just after 1 p.m. in the area of Palomar Airport Rd. heading toward San Marcos. Nearby deputies began searching the area and located the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of a Target on Business Park Dr. in Vista.While they waited for an ASTREA helicopter and canine unit, deputies set up surveillance on the vehicle. After a few minutes, the suspected driver, identified as Dylan Kidd, returned and deputies moved in toward the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Department (SDSO).Kidd started up the vehicle and led deputies on a four- to five-minute pursuit, during which deputies say he drove recklessly out of the parking lot and onto nearby streets. Kidd eventually left the vehicle and fled into a nearby canyon, according to the department.The vehicle, however, continued and crashed into the garage door of a home on White Sands Drive, causing some minor damage.With the ASTREA helicopter above, deputies were led to Kidd's location after about six minutes and he surrendered to deputies, SDSO said. Kidd was booked into jail and charged with felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, shoplift/burglary, and hit and run. 1405
